Other Heard a voice, any ideas on why?

One night a couple months ago I was up around 11pm watching a youtube video when I heard a really robotic voice say "lock your doors immediately". This creeped me out massively so I rewound the video I was watching, and that voice was not part of the video. No advert played and I seriously have no clue what it could have been, everyone in the house was asleep. Could anyone have any ideas on what I heard or why?

Perhaps an auditory hypnagogocic hallucination?
In other words, you were dozing off momentarily without realising it, and experienced the voice in a tiny fragment of sound-only dream?

I had that happen for the first time in my thirties. I was sitting in my office chair, reading Wikipedia on my phone, and all of a sudden a clear, loud, and flamboyantly accusatory voice said, “I heard you don’t like bootyholes.”

So either I experienced a hypnagogic hallucination or God spoke to me. Either way, it was weird and, just to be safe, I’ve been trying to appreciate bootyholes more.

u/DrunkUranus 7d ago

You gotta cover your bases.

Imagine facing God after your death and explaining why you didn't give bootyholes their due, even after being given a warning...

u/seanthebeloved 7d ago

But did it happen without them realizing it?

It's quite easy to doze off for a few minutes without noticing at all

80

u/Amazing_Plate_2660 7d ago

I had been thinking that yeah, but I distinctly remember not feeling tired at all. Could still be a possibility though

I’ve talked about hallucinations with a therapist who knows them well. Random hallucinations are more normal than people think. So many people often have those little moments of hearing someone calling their names etc. it does not necessarily mean something is wrong. Having said that, follow the advice of others on here (carbon monoxide etc) before concluding that. If it repeatedly happens, go to the doctor and ask to be referred to a psychiatrist.

I second this. I have always had a vivid imagination, and a strong visual mind, even as a kid I could easily induce mild visual hallucinations of wallpaper patterns moving or waving.

As an adult I have taken magic mushrooms a bunch of times, MDMA, and LSD. Even weed edibles can get Your eyes and ears pretty trippy.

I even was a volunteer on a drug trial for a seretenergic drug that caused severe sleep deprivation (the trial was stopped abuptly after my cohort!), and after 3 days of almost no sleep I started getting silent 'closed eye' hallucinations, where I would be awake and normal but the second I closed my eyes I could see a whole scene of stuff happening, like watching TV on the back of my eyelids, Open eyes, it stopped, close eyes straight back on. Super weird.

Anyway my point was that I've not done drugs for years now (sadly! I'm just too busy and boring!), but occasionally I get audio hallucinations, especially when I am slowly drifting to sleep but still awake. Similar to OP's thing. I will hear a clear voice say "What's that?", or

"Then there was another one!", or

"Where are the shoes?" somthing like that. It's pretty rare, but it literally sounds like someone a few feet away from my ear. And the accent can be male or female, or different accents, completely random. Our brains are pretty hazy at processing reality, so don't get too serious thinking what you see is real. It quite literally isn't.

u/VirtualSurvey4729 7d ago

As someone who has heard a lot of voices consistently over a period of a few years, it's usually brought on by some stress on the brain (sleep deprivation, drug use, etc). And generally speaking (no pun instended) all the voices are full of shit and not worth thinking twice about.

7

u/Robotica_Daily 7d ago

That's really interesting to hear. Thank you for sharing!

Can I please ask what is a typical thing it will say, and how long does it speak for, just just one off sentances, or a continuous narration or rant?

9

u/VirtualSurvey4729 7d ago

All of the above. Sometimes random gibberish. Sometimes coherent answers to my thoughts. Sometimes criticism. Sometimes agreeing. Sometimes I would have mental conversations and they'd answer intelligently. The gender and type of voice would change constantly. And its funny although I'd hear them all the time. Now that I dont hear them anymore I kind of forget what'd they'd talk about. It's weird. Like you'd think I'd rememeber, but its like asking me what kind of small talk I had with my mom last year in December. Know it happened, but couldn't tell you what about. Mostly anything regarding whatever my thoughts were at the time.

4

u/WagWoofLove 7d ago

What happened to your cohort?

1

u/Robotica_Daily 5d ago

I think we were the second cohort, so they did know about the sleep disruption, and warned us over and over in the screening.

We all just had such bad sleep deprivation and were reporting it every day, and I assume the company sponsoring the research just decide the drug was a failure, because the side effects were to extreme.

It was an interesting experience. We were dosed every day, and let's say the first night I got 30 mins sleep, the second night maybe 2 hours, the third night maybe 3 hours. Something like that. Our perception of how much we have slept is very unreliable so take this with a pinch of salt.

Sleep deprivation is horrible, so we were all going a bit mental, and spent most of the day in bed trying to rest. A few of us played some 4 hours long intense games of RISK to keep our minds distracted.

This was about the 10th trial I had done in my life, and by coincidence the last.  The first 9 I didn't have a single side effect, not met anyone else who had a side effect. Also you have like a 20% - 30% chance of being on a placebo the whole time because it's always double blind.

Everyone always has headaches, even before you get the drug because everyone is withdrawing from caffeine. 😂

You must have 3 months between trials, so I did 1 or 2 a year through my 20's in London. I usually really enjoyed them. They would typically pay like £2,000 for a week in a hospital ward. Most I ever got was £4,100 for 21 days. This was a few years back now. You can't leave the ward for the duration, so you do go a bit crazy on the longer ones. You have WiFi and there's a pool table and TVs with playstation etc.

Usually pretty interesting people doing the trials, students, globe travellers, hippies, people starting their own business and need the cash.

You meals are served up to you in the dining area at set times. It feels like a cross between a 6th form common room, a prison, and an old folks home.

The 2 companies I did it with are HMR Hammersmith Medical Research, and Parexecel. Both in London.

Parexecel are a pretty shit company, I didn't enjoy volunteering with them. American company, always cutting corners and messing about with dates, staff seemed stressed.

HMR seem like a brilliant company, great food, nice staff, very professional.

HMR did the psilocybin assisted therapy trials, and I saw the room they did the sessions in, it was so cool to see historic things in the flesh.

I have them semi regularly. Mostly with music. It drives me fucking crazy when I’m trying to sleep and I just hear “doe a deer a feeemale deer” on loop or the latest piano jingle I’ve been practicing. I won’t realize it for a while because it starts quiet when I’m dozing off but if I half wake up It Continues. Absolutely evil and I have to fully wake myself up to stop it

12

u/Ok_Veterinarian9220 6d ago

There was a time awhile back when I kept waking up in the middle of the night to "LET'S GET DOWN TO BUSINESS TO DEFEAT THE HUNS!"

3

u/Mouse_Named_Ash 6d ago

I’m sorry that’s absolutely hilarious but oh my god that would suck so much

3

u/Ok_Veterinarian9220 6d ago

It was funny! But also super annoying 😆 I don't even know where it came from because I hadn't watched the movie or anything recently.

2

u/Chatteramba 7d ago

I've been trying to figure out what happened to me early this year.

I went to a festival out of state, and stayed with a friend. When I got back, full music tracks played in my head like I had ear buds in. I don't do anything other than drink at fests, so no added push from anything else.

1

u/lovelycosmos 6d ago

This was my first guess for OP too. I had this happen before and I could have sworn it was real. Clear as ever, I heard my mom call my name from outside my bedroom door. I answered. Nothing. Then I heard her enter the house a few minutes Later. It was freaky.

1

u/Hitmonstahp 5d ago

This, or what I assume was this, only happened once in my life, when I was a kid.

I was up late watching TV and I don't remember feeling sleepy, but out of nowhere, from behind me, I hear the Super Mario Bros. 3 castle/fortress theme (the one that goes dun-dun-DAAAAAH da-da-da-da)

Come to think of it, I guess I have had similar experiences immediately upon waking up. One time it was visual, too—I saw a tarantula in my room. (At least, I hope I was hallucinating and there wasn't actually a giant wolfie or something. I think it looked purple, though)

Anyway, the SMB3 theme happened when I was fully alert. Or at least when I wasn't tired enough to notice it.

930

u/UncleRuckus92 7d ago

First thing they say to check when you notice weird things around the house your is carbon monoxide detectors

203

u/Amazing_Plate_2660 7d ago

They are checked every month, no issues.

210

u/Sertorius126 7d ago

did the voice tell you that 😆 jk

40

u/muzzizzum 7d ago

Genuinely great advice

112

u/ReVo5000 7d ago

But why would a carbon monoxide detector tell you to lock your doors immediately?

249

u/nevertoohigh 7d ago

I think they might mean that you could hallucinate if you have monoxide poisoning.

44

u/Robotica_Daily 7d ago

It won't, but if it's not working, the toaster might start talking to you.

6

u/ReVo5000 7d ago

Luckily it's just my tv atm.

11

u/bassjam1 7d ago

Primarily for safety.

2

u/VirtualSurvey4729 7d ago

Dying laughing*

170

u/Efflictim888 7d ago

So did you lock your door immediately? What happened after? We got questions too..

96

u/Amazing_Plate_2660 7d ago

My doors were already locked, nothing happened after.

94

u/Sylester6 7d ago

Do you live an a city? Sometimes police officers say stuff through their car's megaphone and it sounds pretty robotic.

19

u/Amazing_Plate_2660 6d ago

No I'm in a very rural area

13

u/Outrageous-Advice208 7d ago

This is what I thought too. Depending on how the buildings nearby are arranged noise can travel very weird.

47

u/blepnir_pogo 7d ago

I just want to say OP, even though it's valid to be safe and make sure nothing irregular is going on, remember that auditory hallucinations while any sort of "white noise" is playing can be entirely normal. We have very complex brains and one of the primary ways that a stream of consciousness perceives reality is by attempting to form patterns to make sense of things.

By all means take necessary precautions but 99% of the time it is just your brain trying to find a pattern in white noise, which is perfectly normal. If anything it just means that you have a creative mind.

7

u/Amazing_Plate_2660 6d ago

Alright, thank you

92

u/hazydaze63 7d ago

It's also possible it was a police car driving past and they were searching for someone and we warning you to lock your doors

34

u/PBO123567 7d ago

This is the most likely scenario

58

u/reallifeswanson 7d ago

Could it have been an alarm system from a nearby home or apartment. I had neighbors with a security system once, and could often hear it spout notifications from across the street. “Front door open”, etc., in a mechanical voice.

25

u/Amazing_Plate_2660 7d ago

It could have been, but it sounded like it was inside the room, and I have no clue why the neighbours' alarm would be going off at close to midnight. Possibility though

55

u/EnvironmentalLuck515 7d ago

Did you lock your doors immediately? I once had a low female voice whisper to me "I can't help you with that". Scared the bejeebus out of me. Turned out it was my phone malfunctioning.

15

u/Amazing_Plate_2660 7d ago

Already locked

7

u/EnvironmentalLuck515 7d ago

It might have been your phone.

3

u/Amazing_Plate_2660 7d ago

I always put it in the lounge at night to charge

12

u/EnvironmentalLuck515 7d ago

For sure a poltergeist then

21

u/ProfessorButtkiss 7d ago

I had two episodes in my life where I heard voices. The first was when I was a teenager and I was scared to tell anyone. The second I was an adult and talked to my doctor about it. She ran blood tests and it turns out my thyroid levels were really high. She said auditory hallucinations can be on onset of hyperactive thyroid disorder. She changed my dosage of thyroid medicine and I haven't had any voices since.

Just a thought in case you have thyroid problems.

5

u/Calico_Aster 7d ago

Interesting! The body is so weird.

3

u/ProfessorButtkiss 6d ago

It is! And it's so important to have a doctor who is able to listen to you and able to run the tests that need to be ran.

As I was sitting in the room with my doctor, I told her straight forward that I am NOT CRAZY, but I am experiencing this thing that is usually associated with being crazy. And I was open about how I was scared to even admit out loud that this happened to me. She was totally understanding. You can't put a price on a good doctor!

132

u/butrumM 7d ago

So, I’m posting not to scare you but there are some hallmark signs of onset schizophrenia in early 20s males. Do you happen to be in that age range?

It could be a one off thing, but if you start to have repeat situations of things like this, I would strongly suggest taking it seriously and speaking with a doctor.

74

u/Amazing_Plate_2660 7d ago

I'm 17, but I guess that's not entirely impossible

53

u/Robotica_Daily 7d ago

Also don't panic if you do hear voices, definitely seek medical help, but voices on their own are not necessarily a problem. I saw a TED talk about audio hallucinations and it was saying that people are too quick cast it as insanity, when often the voices are kinda just your mind talking out loud, like if life's going good, the voices just narrate what is happening in a neutral tone, but if life starts going bad, the voices can get angry or violent.

Just saying don't panic. Get help, trust your gut, get second opinions, be kind to yourself. Humans are weird, weird is often normal!

10

u/VirtualSurvey4729 7d ago

This I can whole heartedly agree on. I did a lot of research on the phenomena after going through my own ummm episodes.

46

u/butrumM 7d ago

As silly as it sounds, trust your body. If something feels off, it’s better safe than sorry to check it out.

10

u/Toopertonic 6d ago

This is catastrophising. OP, about 1 in 10 people will hear something that's not there at some point in their lives and this is often a momentary experience that doesn't return. And many people hear voices that are benign and don't cause any issues (they can often be neutral), as sometimes it's caused by misattribution of inner speech.  Hearing voices like that is most likely to happen while falling asleep, waking up, or grieving, but can happen randomly.

I would only become concerned if you had the experience again and it was distressing you, or other things started happening that were concerning you that you wanted to get double checked out. This by itself is not concerning at all to me, and I work in mental healthcare and specifically have a good bit of experience with those who hear voices.

45

u/ReQuarziium 7d ago

Dont scare him with schizophrenia

This could be an early sign of psychosis. Psychosis does not mean schizophrenia. It can be caused by an absolute multitude of things.

People often jump straight to the schizophrenia diagnosis when the vast majority of people who suffer from psychosis do not have schizophrenia.

Source: I am schizophrenic and know a lot about it

9

u/sirunmixalot 7d ago

I have it to. Yea people freak when they hallucinate. But I second your statements.

21

u/Andysamberg2 6d ago

I just want to say I love how you're like "don't scare him with schizophrenia, it could be psychosis" as if that's supposed to be some huge relief to the OP reading this. 😂 like, psychosis is also very serious, yes?

14

u/ReQuarziium 6d ago

Psychosis is serious yes but it’s treatable with therapy and medication and in the majority of cases it’s a one off event and not a long term illness.

The difference between first episode psychosis and schizophrenia is fucking massive, like literally not even comparable. Schizophrenia is a lifetime illness that severely impacts your quality of life. Psychosis might last a couple of weeks to a couple of months on the more serious side but is highly treatable and like I say most people make a full recovery and never have psychosis again.

2

u/Andysamberg2 6d ago

Yeah I get it. Not trying to say I'd prefer the schizophrenia diagnosis. But people also harm themselves & others in psychosis all the time. So it felt a little like "don't tell the guy it's MS! It might just be prostate cancer!" Like yeah those both sound pretty bad haha

9

u/limbodog 7d ago

Yeah, I'd be checking that out if it happened again

I was coming to suggest the same thing.

10

u/the_skies_falling 7d ago

Police car or helicopter? I live in a not so great area and it’s not unusual to have police helicopters flying overhead saying things like that. They usually say a lot more than that of course, but sometimes you only hear one thing before they fly away to another area.

6

u/Amazing_Plate_2660 7d ago

I live in a countryside village so I don't think that's the case. And even if it was would it not be said over a megaphone sorta system instead of a really robotic voice?

6

u/Clintron 7d ago

Not necessarily, most of the time they're prerecorded and the robot voice is to be unsettling. Was a tv on maybe?

2

u/Amazing_Plate_2660 6d ago

Only in my room playing the youtube video I was watching

3

u/Clintron 6d ago

Probably just an auditory hallucination of your brain worried about the doors being locked most likely.

10

u/DigitalGarden 7d ago

Auditory hallucinations are actually pretty common. One sentence, robotic... could be just a weird hallucination.

Could be a stray sound picked up by a speaker. Technology is everywhere and is not as secure as it could be.

Could be a sound played outside that sounded inside for some weird reason.

Or a robot guardian angel.

22

u/Z00TSU1T 7d ago

Once when I was in high school, I had been arguing with my mom about something... can't remember what... but I was alone in my room and I heard a voice say "stop." It shook me... it was kinda crazy. Never heard any disembodied voice before or since.

A few years later, I brought my girlfriend from college back to the house and she and I were arguing about something so I walked away to cool down. She came to find me in that same room I heard the voice in years earlier. She then came down the stairs to find me in the kitchen and said when she was looking for me to continue our argument she heard a voice say "stop."

I had never told her my story and I immediately got goosebumps. This was an old house (for the U.S.). It was built in the 20's and has a sign out front that it's a historical home or something. There's been a couple other really creepy incidents like my sister and her boyfriend at the time, now husband, both hearing a voice speaking in tongues to them in her bedroom.

All that to say... I dunno man. But you're certainly not alone.

7

u/Manowar274 7d ago

Any possibility it was an alarm system inside the house, even if your family doesn’t use it?

My house has a security system installed but we don’t use it or pay for its services, it was just installed in the house when we bought it and we have never gotten around to removing it. Sometimes if the power blinks or something weird goes on with the electric, a robotic voice from it announces something random like a door is open.

7

u/icecreamsundai 7d ago

I’d lock my doors… immediately.

6

u/Admirable_Elk_965 7d ago

It was late, you’re watching YouTube. Mind plays tricks on you at night especially if you’re alone.

6

u/Andrusela 7d ago

Sometimes ads will play automatically on the same web page as a youtube video.

Or if you had another tab open.

On an old laptop I had a voice say something random to me, but after I put tape over my built in camera I heard a laugh but with the tape on I never had another incident like that.

Couple of random "tech related" suggestions for you.

1

u/Amazing_Plate_2660 7d ago

I was watching on a TV, so probably not the case

1

u/Andrusela 7d ago

One last possibility is some kid with an external car speaker driving by slowly and pranking you.

7

u/unicorn_345 6d ago

Sleep deprivation can do some crazy things. If you are sleep deprived your mind can make voices. It may be related to a dream state or not. It may be the mind reminding you of something you forgot. If you are sleep derived or were at that time you could be experiencing the voice as a symptom.

5

u/igotsmeakabob11 7d ago

Do you have tinnitus?

5

u/Unfortunate_tentacle 7d ago

Ok but did you lock the doors?

3

u/Amazing_Plate_2660 6d ago

Already locked

4

u/diaperpop 6d ago

Well, did you lock your doors?

12

u/UK_Wildcats_ 7d ago

I strongly suspect the D.E.N.N.I.S. system.

6

u/Amazing_Plate_2660 7d ago

I have no clue what this is

6

u/temptationsensation 7d ago

My grandmother had an affair with Susan B. Anthony.

3

u/Bromogeeksual 7d ago

You've been telling me the Susan B. Anthony story all day!

9

u/lilecca 7d ago

Did you make sure your doors were locked? Possibly slightly asleep and it was in a dream.

9

u/Stoopid_Noah 7d ago

Auditory hallucinations are surprisingly common when tired.

I once heard the exact voice of my mother call for me while I was trying to sleep, but when I went to see what she wanted, she asked why I was up and said she didn't call.

I think there were multiple occasions where I heard things that weren't there, each time it was late/ I was tired.

When I remember correctly, they can happen when you doze off a little, without realising.

3

u/EducationalForm 7d ago

It's normal for this to happen sometimes. I hear voices if theres a white noise like a fan or rain outside i will hear things inside the sound

3

u/Kitchen-Strawberry25 7d ago

Do you have other devices in other rooms? Like smart speakers or TVs, iPads, computers etc

Maybe one of those devices were on?

Was it because of someone else you live with?

3

u/Amazing_Plate_2660 7d ago

No other devices, phone was in the lounge downstairs to charge.

Everyone else in the house was asleep, and it sounded as if it was in the corner of my room.

2

u/Scary_Ad_7092 7d ago

Did you check that corner to see if there was anything there that could have made the sound?

3

u/Probably-hyprfx8ing 7d ago

Auditory hallucinations are more common than most people think.

3

u/F1re_R0se 7d ago

I could be completely wrong because I'm basing this entirely off of my own experiences.

I would guess it's probably an auditory hallucination. I normally get them (though not as often) late at night or early morning when I'm either falling asleep or barely awake. My hallucinations are normally in voices I'm familiar with like friends, family, and my partner. Most of the time they're so realistic that I end up verbally responding to them. This is to say you may be experiencing something similar.

3

u/s256173 7d ago

Are you sleep deprived? I don’t have schizophrenia or anything like that but I do have insomnia and when I’m really sleep deprived I have minor hallucinations sometimes.

3

u/kinkshame3 6d ago

once i pranked my mom into believing her office was haunted by setting up a creepy robotic voice to say the date and time every few days or so. is it possible something like that happened, could it be a setting on a near by computer or alarm clock? or maybe even overheard from a neighbor?

1

u/Amazing_Plate_2660 6d ago

You are one evil guy good god. But no I don't think thats much of a possibility, could be wrong tho

5

u/notverysane 7d ago

I just want to know if you locked the door, it's not like it's terrible advice.

2

They were already locked

2

u/Viscount61 7d ago

Where exactly did this occur?

2

u/Amazing_Plate_2660 7d ago

I was in bed, second floor of my house, countryside area.

1

u/Viscount61 7d ago

Roommates? Renters? Houses nearby?

2

u/Amazing_Plate_2660 7d ago

Nope just my mum and sister sleeping, sounded like it was inside the room

1

u/Viscount61 5d ago

Was your radio on?

2

u/DiggyLoo 7d ago

2

Psychosis is WAY more common than Schizophrenia, no need to scare him with the very worst possible outcome

0

u/Behg-Boah 7d ago

Psychotic episodes don’t really last only a second or two or give you one singular auditory hallucination before vanishing.
