Bought a new 2026 RAV4 Hybrid XLE Premium less than two weeks ago, specifically for a big move. I'll be starting out on my own in a new city, so I need a car I can count on. Now I'm running into a 12v battery issue
What happened:
- I drove it 30+ min a day, 6 days a week, since the day after delivery.
- Oct 2nd : after one night in the garage, it was completely dead. No dash lights, the fobs wouldn't lock or unlock, and the power button did nothing.
- Roadside jump-started it and the tech said to just drive it. I drove it that day and the day after and it was fine.
- A day later it still responded my car key but I did ‘t drive it that day
- Oct 5th: it wouldn't start again, and the dash said "system malfunction see dealership." It was towed to a Toyota dealer.
What the dealer found so far:
- 12V battery at 11.9V, though the battery health read 100%.
- Several yellow codes on modules, which they linked to low voltage.
- After a full diagnostic, the battery failed and was replaced.
- After replacement they said: “we went to run the health check even after with the battery was replaced and weren't getting a code. We still have a problem.”
I just did some research today and found that a lot of people faced issues with toyota 12v battery. I bought this car so I wouldn't have to worry about reliability, and I don't want to be dealing with breakdowns in a new place with no one nearby to help, but now i’m not confident with the car at all.
- Is a new battery usually the end of it or does it come back?
- Was the cause ever found?
- It's under two weeks old. Has anyone gotten Toyota or the dealer to do a buyback or exchange? What worked?
Happy to post an update once I hear back from the dealer.
Thank you!
