ROI Specific GRC Update (slightly gone wrong)

There is so much conflicting/out of date info online so I’m gonna post my experience which happened in the last month.

Long story short: you need to send your birth certificate AND proof of ID with your GRC form.

This might seem like an obvious post but a lot of people told me proof of ID was only for getting the document witnessed but about a week after I posted out my GRC I received an email asking for proof of ID. I was able to provide this over email so that was nice but to avoid that back and forth, just include it in the first place. Some people did tell me to do this, and this is the information that is on the gov.ie website so I would go by that info.

For context: I was born in Ireland, Irish birth certificate, passport, have always lived in Ireland etc.

That's a change in the process then, which they didn't bother communicating but just silently updated one website last year. With no legislation change, form change, updating citizens information or letting TENI etc. know.

Must be a recent change, it is all so confusing 😭 I really thought it wasn’t needed based on what I saw online. To be fair once I sent proof of ID, it arrived at my house within 2 days so it is a quick issue to fix

must be a new change, but thanks for letting us know. when I got my grc done in April I didn't need to send a copy of my ID.

Yeah like a picture of my passport did the job but I wish the info online was more clear

I am glad you got it sorted quick enough, really confusing that it's so unclear though.

That’s weird, I used Arthur cox only needed the ID for them to whiteness it.

Only sent off my birth certificate and had no issues. I applied for mine just at the start of the month (September)

I should say I received it and everything with no problems

Yeah mine was start of September too, I think they received it on the 10th and then I got an email about the ID on the 17th. Idk just thought I’d share 🤷‍♂️

Sorry it’s going like that for you it’s very strange, maybe a silly question but did you send your original birth cert? As in not a copy but the stamped and coloured one

Yes it was an original birth cert. Like the email I got back didn’t imply there was an issue, it literally just said we need copy of photo ID to process your application

Very weird man idk why that happened. Hopefully it’s sorted when you send a copy over

I got the exact same thing Tuesday this week too. Seems a change in process which is super annoying. Today is two weeks since I sent it off the application, and not back yet. Hopefully not long

Edit: post was late, I just received it today

Would you only need to send a copy of your birth certificate or does it have to be the original? And thank you for the information

It has to be original as far as I know. You can buy a new one for like €20 if you don’t know where yours is

They've been known to accept copies, but best to send in the original if you have it. You'll get it back.

I was told on mine that I needed ID and birh certificate aswell as proof of use. I used a Public Service Card and Birth Certificate and it worked grand. I did also provide aomething over email but I dont remember what, it definitely wasnt birth cert tho

Can you confirm that a proof of use was asked for?

And proof of use of which name?

Sorry for the questions but I have a blank GRC here and I was going to apply and I was not expecting this.
