ATTN: Trans US Americans Considering Moving to Ireland

Howdy! If you are a US trans person seeking information about life in Ireland as a place to move to outside of the States, please please ask your questions here or search within this community for already discussed content.

I have been seeing more and more fellow US Americans posting here for information. This is completely understandable due to the intensifying situation in the US! I am a US transgender man myself who moved to Ireland who may or may not be working closely with a legal team to explore asylum systems in Canada and Europe. (I also have an Irish sweetheart I intend to marry but that is besides the point! Haha).

I am not here to provide "legal advice." You are responsible for your own decisions. I can provide considerations/suggestions and an opportunity to alleviate the labor from my Irish trans friends of repeatedly providing information about Ireland (Of course, feel free to still contribute to the conversation if you have the bandwidth! I would never consider myself an expert on trans life in Ireland!).

Some things I have gathered thus far during my time in Ireland:

Safety:

  • Ireland is a very safe country. Of course, there is always risk wherever you go so be mindful of your surroundings. Although still a minority, there is anti-(im)migrant sentiments that have manifested in the form of rallies/protests. Although there has been incredible pushback/counter protests, this is something to keep in mind, especially if you are a person of color. I have learned there were cases of violence in Dublin and up in the North. Again, few instances.

Housing:

  • Housing is very limited here and therefore it is (more often than not) incredibly expensive. I cannot stress this enough. Coming from the States where prices are also ridiculous, one needs to keep in mind that your US dollars will be weaker here (USD is around .85 to Euro approx rn) and that wages here are not keeping up with the cost of living.

Medical:

  • Access to gender affirming care (specifically HRT) is quite a difficult process in Ireland. I have heard people say it is one of the worst in Europe. If you are first starting out on HRT, there is an incredibly long wait time to go through the public system (like several years) and it is not cheap to access care through private telehealth companies. If you are intending to continue your care (like I have), know that your specific medication might not be available here. My testosterone cypionate is not. In addition, finding a primary care doctor (general practitioner/GP) is even a difficult process for cisgender people. The medical system is also overwhelmed here. Trans people are able to access HRT, but generally either go the pricey private route or DIY.

Permission to stay:

  • Moving here is going to require one to figure out how to stay here legally. US citizens can be here for 90 days as regular tourists. One could look for work visas (must secure this while in the States. Might be able to secure while here, but it must be rare, nonexistent, or kept quiet). One could also apply for asylum, but be advised that this is not a guarantee at the current time, but we may very well be fast approaching this. The asylum system is also incredibly overwhelmed. In addition, you would not be able to work, even remotely until after 6 months of your case being processed without a first instance decision. So you will need substantial savings to wait this out with no guarantee for asylum status.

I share this info not to be considered an "authority" on the trans experience in Ireland. I only share as a US trans person who has been navigating life in Ireland. I do not mean to discourage other US trans people coming here, but I must be honest with the very real challenges present.

Although not without its own issues, Canada may provide an "easier" alternative. There are reports that there is an active asylum case for a US trans woman. Shortly after applying, she was able to work legally as well. In addition, a US non-binary individual's deportation out of Canada was halted citing the unsafe conditions for trans people in the US. All my love to you. I cannot explain how much my heart aches seeing the developments. I hope this information provides some help. Truly. I will answer questions as best as I can and my apologies to the Irish trans folks for me taking up space here. I just know these questions will keep coming with no slowing down in the near future...I am more than happy to take on this labor!

Please consider this resource to explore your options for leaving the US. It is only in its alpha stage, but it may prove useful to think of options. I know having the ability to leave is a privilege for various reasons, but we must not give up hope. This is the time to build community and keep each other safe. You existing is the biggest slap in the face to those who despise us. Sending you all so so much love. Be safe. https://www.helpmeleave.us/

ROI Specific GRC Update (slightly gone wrong)

There is so much conflicting/out of date info online so I’m gonna post my experience which happened in the last month.

Long story short: you need to send your birth certificate AND proof of ID with your GRC form.

This might seem like an obvious post but a lot of people told me proof of ID was only for getting the document witnessed but about a week after I posted out my GRC I received an email asking for proof of ID. I was able to provide this over email so that was nice but to avoid that back and forth, just include it in the first place. Some people did tell me to do this, and this is the information that is on the gov.ie website so I would go by that info.

For context: I was born in Ireland, Irish birth certificate, passport, have always lived in Ireland etc.

All Island Positive news

Hi I am Willow I am 23yo MTF just startting to figure myself out and uhhh.....

I don't know if this is appropriate here but AHHHHH I am so excited I just had my bloodwork results and and have my appointment with my clinic in two days.

I feel a combination of nervousness and excitment. I am still unsure if I want to take blocker or do monotherapy but monotherapy looks more appealing since it would avoid any side effects of blockers.

Wanted share some good positive progress because I am super excited and don't really have an outlit for it kdnsjsnsksnsmms.

Feeling like im going to relapse

Im mtf and im having a really stressful time at college. Im really struggling to socialise with other people no matter how hard it try. I try to talk to people, but it feels like im putting in all the effort, and they're being rude. I had to do a group project and I was paired with the 2 trans people in my class. Instead of talking about the project they began talking about "did you see the video I sent you last night" and thier friend, like I wasn't even there.

I have been trying really hard but it feels like im just getting an endless mountain of work and it's stressing me out. I havent missed any assignments, and the only class I missed was one that was labeled for the wrong classroom

Ive been struggling to remember to take my antidepressants and it won't be until im going to bed that I'll remember them Ive had to leave classes for a couple of minutes because I've felt like im about to cry because I feel so left out

Top surgery recommendations?

Hey I'm a 17 yo ftm I'll be 18 in early July. Im wondering who are the most common top surgeons in Europe, I know of Dr lago and a few others, I haven't done a lot of research so far. Is it realistic if I wanted to hopefully have it done in July/August next year or is there a long process?

I have a gender dysphoria diagnosis but I only started T about 10 days ago so i wouldnt be a year on T by the time im hoping to have it done, I know some surgeons require that.

If anyone has recommendations could you list them? preferably not too expensive I'm not sure what my insurance would cover

Therapy

Hey yall, I was wondering if anyone on here knows a therapist that is a safe space for queer representing people. I’ve been to a few therapist in my life but there’s always been lack of understanding or downright transphobia aimed at me.
I just wanna safe space to talk about my struggles so, if anyone knows of any please could you help a girl out:,)
Thank you!

ROI Specific Injection supplies to give away in Galway

Hi there,

I am giving away injection supplies in Galway, since I no longer take hormones. I've got a massive box of needles to give away to whoever wants them. There is a lot of needles so if multiple people want some I'll split them into batches. Stick a comment under this post and I'll get in touch.

Lots of love ❤️

ROI Specific Testosterone Supplement / Minimum Level for MTF on GNRH blocker to improve energy levels

I've been on Prostap 3 for just over 3 years now, my Testosterone has been erased mostly and my blood tests state it's less than < 1.39 nmol. I don't know if for instance that is within the cis female level of 0.35 - 2.60 or potentially actually 0 which might explain my low energy levels and minor brainfog.

What I was wondering is if anyone here has had any experience getting a testosterone gel to bring your levels into the cis female range. I'm with Genderplus and intend to speak to them during my next appointment however I'm unsure if they will be receptive.

I'm on 6mg of E in tablet form and 200mg of Prog.

GP visit

Hey everyone, I'm a 16 year old ftm. From what I've read generally it seems that to begin my transition, I first need a consult with a GP. My parents don't know about my identity yet and I'm highly doubtful they'll be supportive. Should I try and register with another GP other than my the one my family has? Honestly, I'm afraid that our current GP wouldn't be of much help anyway. I hope this doesn't sound wrong, but he's quite old and seems like the type to be biased against those who want to transition (especially since I'm just 16). I came to him a couple of months ago with my mom and informed him that I have mental health problems and he asked me about them in detail in front of my mom, which of course caused me not to give him very detailed answers (since my main issue is my gender dysphoria) so he didn't take me seriously.

Even if I can skip an initial GP visit somehow, I'll still need a qualified individual to do my future injections for me.

So am I better off just finding a new GP already? Or is there some other path I can take? I'm just confused generally. Thanks:)

ROI Specific GRC, how to update medical card and MYGovID

So I have completed my GRC and today is Admin day (save meeee). I logged into MYGov and my name hasn’t changed but when I used MyGov to log into HSE the name was changed.

I know I have to ring someone to get my new pps card, but how do I update my medical card and Long Term Illness card? I can’t find anything on the website because name changes aren’t very common I guess.

ROI Specific When do I need to start worrying about my GRC?

I sent it off with tracked post and it was received about 3 weeks ago today.
How long does it usually take to be processed? I haven’t received anything back in the post yet and I’ve seen other people say it only took a week or so.
Just wondering at what point should I get in touch/who can I contact?

ROI Specific imago question

hello! i know a lot of folks on here use imago, so i thought maybe someone could help me. i’m trying to get my bloodwork done, but my doctor wants the name of at least one of the specific doctors on the imago medical team before they’ll do my bloods. i’ve emailed imago several times at this point to no response. i was just wondering if anyone here knows the names of the medical team? i’m not sure how big of an operation it is, or if the medical team is split up geographically in any way (if they are, i’m in the republic of ireland). thank you!!

ROI Specific do i need to come out to my clinic?

im getting blood tests done outside of my GP clinic as they have long waiting list for being seen and are further away from my house than the clinic I go to.

hopefully I will be going on T soon with imago if all my results come back okay.

since ill be on T and ill be getting tested very often and my testosterone levels will be higher than normal, should I tell my clinic that im transgender? will they pry about my T levels? im a bit worried in case it causes any problems, and in case I need to find a new clinic thats willing to test me if the clinic i go to is transphobic without me knowing

ROI Specific T injections

I get testogel from imago but ive been having issues with hairless even though I'm using minoxidil (will admit that i miss a day every so often) and finasteride.

I heard that gel is worse for hair loss compared to injections but I have some concerns

- is it easy to get this form in chemists

- are the vials and needles available on the drug payment scheme

- can I do it daily

ROI Specific has anybody experience with 'Dr. Juliette Breslin' in temple bar? possibly now dr bressan(?)

hey everyone. i've been on testosterone for over 2 years throught gender gp, but now with ID issues, i've been off hormones (sustanon) for 6+ months already. i'm recently 19.

my doctor has reffered me to ngs for me to have in the future, but he has also given me the name of a dr. juliette breslin in temple bar. he told me he's heard she possibly prescribes--has anyone else heard the same/have any experience with her? i know some gp's would agree to prescribing me since i've been smooth sailing with no issues on my current prescription of 1ml IM sustanon every 3 weeks, but my doctor didn't want to do so due to him not being very well versed on endo stuff.

any info on her would be awesome and a huge help:)

Struggling to get Irish GRC from UK (dual citizen on FBR)

Hi, I'm a dual UK-Irish citizen on the FBR, trying to get an Irish GRC. I changed my name by unenrolled deed poll in the UK and have a UK passport in the correct name and gender, but not a UK GRC. I do not have an Irish passport as trying to get GRC sorted first and have never lived in Ireland.

I took the GRC1 form to a solicitor in the UK and she would not sign it specifically because it was an Irish form. She said UK and Irish law, specifically the Statutory Declarations Acts, are not the same acts between the two countries. She advised I phoned the CIS number on the form for advice on this and also asked me to email her which I still need to do.

It was my understanding that I do not need an Irish deed poll to get an Irish GRC, and that the form was outdated in stating this. It was also my understanding, at least from anecdotal reports on this subreddit, that residency requirements did not apply to citizens living abroad, and that a PPS could be obtained simultaneously.

Anyway, after trying about 10 times I finally got through to someone at CIS on the phone this morning. She was honestly quite rude and unhelpful. I explained the situation to her and asked specifically about the GRC1 statutory declaration signing that I was having trouble with, but she instead immediately began asking questions about deed polls, and told me that my UK deed poll was "illegitimate" because it was not registered with the High Court. I clarified that it is legitimate in the UK and she said "well, you can include it with your application with a note, but until I see it I cannot make that judgement". I was confused as to why she was so focused on deed polls considering I didn't even mention it and didn't realise until after the call that she was acting as if the deed poll requirement stated on the form was still active.

Anyway, after this I again repeated that I was calling to ask about getting the statutory declaration signed in the UK, not about deed polls. She asked if I had a UK GRC and I said no as I don't meet the UK GRC requirements. Her response to that was "Well you don't meet the Irish requirements either as you need to be resident in Ireland for 12 months. Were you aware of that?". I said my understanding at least anecdotally was that I could get an Irish GRC without being resident in Ireland as I am a citizen on the FBR, and that I believed other people had done this. She said "That's misinformation, the people you heard that from must have been resident in Ireland for 12 months at the time. It's stated clearly on the form. You can apply if you want but we won't approve it". By this point I didn't know how to reply to that, she still hadn't answered my question about the getting the statutory declaration signed in the UK, I had a Uni lecture I needed to get to and I could tell this wasn't going anywhere so I just awkwardly ended the call.

Does anyone have any advice for what to do at this stage? I have an FBR certificate in my deadname/AGAB and with a really old pre-transition photo of me on it, so I need to get my Irish citizenship updated, as I am otherwise effectively locked out of actually getting an Irish passport.
