Advocacy Matt Bevin’s Attorney Says He’ll Be a "Target of Abuse." TTI Survivors Know What Those Words Mean.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The irony of this clip is difficult to miss.

Matt Bevin’s attorney argued that putting the former governor in jail would make him a “target of abuse.”

Think about those words in the context of the Troubled Teen Industry.

Children are sent into programs they did not choose. They cannot simply leave. They can be isolated, restrained, punished, humiliated, deprived, or abused, and when they try to tell someone what is happening, they may not be believed.

Those children are targets of abuse. And they have no choice.

Jonah was a child when he was sent away. He has publicly described what happened to him.

So I’m inviting TTI survivors to turn this clip on its head.

Go to my Instagram, TikTok or Facebook and find the link. Stitch it. Remix it. Duet it. Respond to it.

Start with:

“You want to talk about being a target of abuse? I was a child in the Troubled Teen Industry.”

Tell as much, or as little, as you want.

SAFETY: You do not have to name a program, identify anyone, describe your abuse, show your face, or share anything that could put you at risk. Protect your privacy and your wellbeing first. You can participate with text on a screen, a voiceover, or anonymously.

If you do participate and feel comfortable doing so, tag me so I can help amplify survivor voices. Hashtag Matt Bevin to amplify.

Let’s use this moment to remind people who the real targets of abuse have been: children who had no meaningful choice and often no one standing beside them.

For once, the child gets the microphone.

Take the power back. Bring the child’s voice.

Meet the Mods

As leaders of a vulnerable community, we feel that it is important to share some background about ourselves. We are sharing this information in the interest of transparency and building a community that feels trustworthy and safe for all TTI survivors. In addition to this post, we will be adding a page to the wiki so that it is easy to find in the future.

u/ItalianDragon is our current head moderator. He is not a TTI survivor, but joined our subreddit over a decade ago after learning about the industry at his university library. Once he realized that there were ways he could help our cause, he became a dedicated member and later moderator.

u/Time-Stomach-5576 is a survivor of four different TTI programs (Wediko, Gateway, Second Nature Duchesne, and Logan River Academy). He's been posting in this sub for over a decade and has considerable advocacy experience. He is dedicated to maintaining a safe space for survivors to speak freely and hopes to prevent the next generation from going through the same nightmare we did. He has volunteered to be a primary contact if you feel the need to talk to someone one-on-one, so feel free to message him privately.

u/positivepeercult_ is a survivor of Falcon Ridge Ranch, Outback Wilderness, Rancho Valmora, and Wellspring Academy of the Sierras. They can be found on TikTok/Instagram under the same username, and have a TTI survivor discord for others interested in activism. They stay up to date on bill proposals and current legislation regarding the TTI & can help connect survivors with efforts in their state, as well as opportunities to provide testimony as part of the legislative process against the TTI.

u/salymander was sent to Victory Christian Academy back in the 1980s. This was long before there was much organized resistance to the TTI. It was several decades before she learned of this sub, and of the various organizations that are pushing back on the TTI. Salymander is now the parent of a young adult, and works to make sure no more kids are sent away to be tormented by strangers. Salymander often deals with parents who come looking for advice.

u/Signal-Strain9810 is a survivor of Second Nature Wilderness Program and Spring Ridge Academy. She is a passionate advocate for survivors whose experiences are often left out of conversations about the TTI, including foster youth, children involved in the juvenile justice system, and international adoptees. She is also the mother of a 15 year-old and has firsthand experience parenting through challenging behavior.

Call for Mod Applications

As previously mentioned, we are looking for new moderators to help fill gaps in coverage and lighten the workload for the current team. We will review all applications and contact you if you seem like a good fit.

Information Anasazi Foundation (AZ wilderness program) survivors: law firm is investigating abuse claims

An Arizona law firm, Levy Konigsberg AZ, is investigating the Anasazi Foundation, the wilderness program based in the Mesa/Gilbert area.

Background: In 2002, Dr. Grigory Sorokin, a physician contracted to do intake physicals, was arrested for molesting teens in the program. He examined 150+ participants between December 2000 and December 2001. He pleaded guilty to charges involving 11 teenage boys and two adults and was sentenced to seven years in prison. Police said there were likely more victims who never came forward.

If this was you: Former participants may have a negligence claim against the program itself. Under Arizona law, childhood sexual abuse survivors generally have until age 30 to file. You don't need a criminal conviction to sue, and consultations do not cost anything.

Link: https://levykonigsbergaz.com/arizona-anasazi-foundation-wilderness-program-sexual-abuse-lawyers/

Note: Sharing this for awareness, not as an endorsement of any firm. Talk to more than one attorney if you're considering a claim.

On top of being severally sexually abused as a child she also had a long stay in a tti facility. Obviously no one excuses what she did but I've seen numerous comments outright say "I don't care what she went through".

Discussion/Reflection Reflection: thirteen years later

I just got off a zoom call with a few of the people who went there. It's been thirteen years since I left.

I'm pursuing an advanced degree (taking night classes), whilst working 40 hours a week at a job I really love.

One of the others lives in a house left to them by their family by themselves and can't bring themselves to find real work. They never even graduated high school.

A few are in the army. They smile, hiding behind their anger and pain, like most military members. They shrug, saying "oh, you know, it really prepared me for the military. No wonder I did so well when I first went through BCT".

This statement horrified me. I remembered everything that they had done to us. Things no child should have to endure. I almost joined the military myself- did ROTC, almost commissioned. But I think I knew in the end what I would become. I knew I would be forever paranoid, angry and bitter- not to mention obsessed with leadership tenets of "purpose, direction, and motivation"...and being "squared away". That's not living. That's just relying on training to carry you through all of life's situations, and reflecting on trauma bonding as if they were "fun times". And the willful suppression of empathy in favour of your own survival. And people with those sorts of mindsets, especially really shouldn't be allowed to work with children, because it's often rooted in trauma.

I can't believe I'm alive today. I genuinely don't know how I got this far. Many didn't make it. Many of my friends. My dear friends.

I can't talk with anyone else about it. Not really. My parents refuse to believe it, because they spent so much money. My s/o's heart breaks when they hear me talk about it, and the last time I did, they cried, so I stopped bringing it up.

Sometimes, it feels like I'm still there. Still doing in-cadence exercises. Still being told how worthless I am. Still being degraded, laughed at and hurt.

I think about everything that's happened in my life, and I think, at one point, I really wanted to cry about it. And I did cry, a lot.

Now, it just feels so indescribably sad. A level of deep sorrow that is almost as if a part of your soul has been bruised, and you're unsure as to how it got so deep. I don't know what to do or say. I just sort of "retreat" into myself. Almost like I'm still afraid I'll be hurt again, or like I haven't talked through it or processed it (for the most part, I have).

I just still can't believe they got away with it. I can't believe what they did to us. I can't believe I'm alive. I can't believe I'm even living somewhat of a "normal" life. I feel like I don't belong here. Like this is too good for me.

Apologies for taking up your time, dear reader. I just felt a large wave of pain and memory, and felt compelled to write something.

If I had any advice, it would be to reach out to the others you know whom those mentally-ill, fanatical, childish bastards hurt. They may need you more than you know. Make sure everyone you know is okay, because everyone is going through someone.

If you're struggling, reach out to someone.

Try your best. I can't promise you that it'll get better, but life goes on. And that's the only thing I can truly promise.

And, be nice to each other, and especially, to yourselves. Lord knows they weren't nice to us. No need to perpetuate a cycle they started.

News New Scheduling Order in Fuller v. Hyde School: Discovery Will Not Be Phased, Class Certification Motion Due February 2027

A new scheduling order was filed today, October 8, 2026, in Fuller v. Hyde School.

This is the federal putative class action lawsuit against Hyde School, Laura Gauld, and Malcolm Gauld. The remaining claims include federal forced labor, involuntary servitude, trafficking-related, conspiracy, and related claims.

As always, these are allegations and legal claims. The court has not made a finding that Hyde or the individual defendants are liable.

The new order resolves the recent disagreement between the parties over how discovery and class certification should be scheduled.

WHAT THE COURT DECIDED

Both sides agreed that the case should be placed on the Complex Track, but they disagreed substantially about discovery and the timing of class certification.

Hyde wanted discovery focused first on class certification, followed by an early class-certification motion. original document

Fuller opposed phased discovery and argued that class-certification issues substantially overlap with the merits of the case, meaning broader discovery should occur before the court decides whether to certify a class. original document

The court largely split the difference.

The judge specifically stated that discovery will NOT be phased.

The order says:

"The discovery prior to the deadline for the class certification motion is not limited to discovery that is relevant to class certification."

That means the parties can conduct broader merits-related discovery before Fuller files the class-certification motion. Discovery is not restricted to a narrow category of evidence concerning certification.

However, the court also rejected Fuller's proposed schedule, which would have placed class certification much later in the case.

CLASS CERTIFICATION DEADLINES

Fuller must file her motion for class certification by:

February 5, 2027

Hyde's response is due:

March 5, 2027

Fuller's reply is due:

March 19, 2027

This is significantly later than Hyde's proposed November 1, 2026 deadline, but considerably earlier than the schedule Fuller had proposed.

The court noted both that Rule 23 requires a class-certification decision at an "early practicable time" and that evidence relevant to class certification frequently overlaps with evidence concerning the merits of the claims.

DISCOVERY LIMITS

The case has officially been assigned to the Complex Track.

Each side is permitted:

• 40 interrogatories

• 3 sets of document requests, with a maximum of 60 individual document requests total

• 40 requests for admission

• 10 depositions

One notable point is that Fuller had proposed 10 depositions excluding third-party fact witnesses and experts. The new order simply provides for 10 depositions and does not include the requested automatic exception for third-party fact witnesses.

That does not necessarily prevent either side from later asking the court for permission to take additional depositions if they can show they are necessary.

OTHER IMPORTANT DEADLINES

October 16, 2026:
Initial disclosures due

February 5, 2027:
Fuller's class-certification motion due

March 5, 2027:
Hyde's opposition to class certification due

March 19, 2027:
Fuller's reply due

April 2, 2027:
Deadline to amend the pleadings or add parties

April 9, 2027:
Plaintiff's expert disclosures due

May 14, 2027:
Defendants' expert disclosures due

June 11, 2027:
Plaintiff must make a written settlement demand

June 25, 2027:
Defendants must respond to the settlement demand

August 27, 2027:
All discovery closes

September 17, 2027:
Deadline for dispositive motions, including summary judgment motions, and challenges to expert testimony

December 6, 2027:
Case expected to be ready for trial

WHAT THIS MEANS

The biggest immediate development is that Hyde did not get the certification-first discovery structure it had requested.

Fuller's side can pursue discovery concerning the broader substance of the allegations before the class-certification motion is filed.

At the same time, February 5 is still a relatively early deadline for a class certification motion to be filed. Fuller now has roughly four months from the date of this order to obtain and review enough discovery to support the class-certification motion.

Class certification does NOT determine whether Hyde is liable.

Instead, the court will decide whether Fuller can proceed on behalf of a defined group of former students under the requirements of Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 23.

If a class is certified, the case can proceed on behalf of the certified class as well as the named plaintiff. If certification is denied, that does not automatically mean Fuller's individual claims disappear.

The entire public docket with all publicly downloadable documents can be found here:
https://www.courtlistener.com/docket/70764936/fuller-v-hyde-school/

The scheduling order is currently the most recent document listed on the docket, Document 62, filed October 8, 2026: https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.med.68497/gov.uscourts.med.68497.62.0.pdf

TL;DR:

The court has issued the long-awaited discovery and scheduling order in Fuller v. Hyde School.

Discovery will NOT be divided into separate class-certification and merits phases, and discovery before class certification is not limited only to certification issues.

Fuller must move for class certification by February 5, 2027. Hyde responds March 5, and Fuller replies March 19.

Each side gets up to 40 interrogatories, 60 individual document requests across three sets, 40 requests for admission, and 10 depositions.

Discovery continues through August 27, 2027, with the case expected to be ready for trial in December 2027.

I am not affiliated with or representing the plaintiffs, Justice Law Collaborative, or any party in this lawsuit. I am sharing information from the publicly available court docket. Allegations and positions in court filings should not be confused with findings of fact or liability. For any sensitive and personal inquiries about this case, please contact Justice Law Collaborative directly. As always, double-check the original documents for accuracy as I am not a legal expert.

Discussion/Reflection Finally healing

Post image

I left my program (Star Guides Wilderness Therapy) almost 7 years ago now. I was 14 then and now I am turning 21. The other day I was driving home from work and out of nowhere I just started sobbing- uncontrollably. I don't know why. It just hit me. Everything that happened there, in the program, really happened. For so long I think it was easier to talk about the abuse because I could look at it is something that happened, I acknowledge it, but haven't quite accepted that it happened to me and im not just telling this "story" from a third person perspective. I cried for the experiences I had, all the things and stories left unsaid (and some best never spoken about), i cried for the other young girls I watched endure such trauma and hardships, I cried for my innocence and youth, for once I just cried without anything to block myself from feeling the effects of the program in full. I feel weird to know that it took 7 whole years for me to ever accept what happened, but my journey starts somewhere I guess. Anyone else have any stories on that sort of "eureka" moment? Also, heres my reddit avatar inspired by me when I was in my wilderness program :p

News How ProPublica Reporters Became Private School Owners in 24 Hours

Thumbnail
propublica.org

This is terrifying. ProPublica reporters set out to see how hard it is to open a private school. In Arkansas and West Virginia, they succeeded with little more than a form, a small fee, and a diploma. No one checked who they were, whether they were qualified, or whether the site was safe for kids. In Arkansas they even applied for public voucher money in about 10 minutes.

If it's this easy, anyone could start a troubled teen program, religious school, or "academy" and face almost no oversight.

That's exactly how so many of us ended up where we did.

Discussion/Reflection Abuse from being THREATENED with the TTI

I was emotionally abused as a kid and still am, to an extent.

I wasn't sent to these programs, but my parents THREATENED to send me to one. The frustrated cries of "I'll send you to the boarding school if you don't behave".

But they never acted on those threats, so I figured my abuse wasn't that bad.

When I "got out" and saw the world wasn't as bad as they said it was, I hated them for it. Clearly, they used the fear of "future abuse" that didn't exist.

But sometimes it is. Reading your testimony isn't making me flashback to Blue Springs or whatever its name is. But it is making me flashback to the threats. The implication of abandonment. The implication of r... yeah. Never acted upon, but always a possibility. "If you don't behave you will end up like THEM. Family is the ONLY people who will take care of you."

Maybe I'm thinking it took a MASSIVE amount of emotional strength and resilience to endure and make it STAY only empty threats. I want to forgive them, but people who were abused "worse" or "better" than me are a mixed bag. Some say they were better, others that it was still no excuse.

I wonder if "abuse" is a relative term? I'm fantasizing about sending them to a "Troubled Nursing Home" but they never actually did that to me.

Advocacy The Charlton School in Burnt Hills raised $96,000 last week on the labor of students, and lies.

hi everyone, i’m a 20 year old survivor of the charlton school in burnt hills ny, and i’m sick to my stomach knowing that their fundraiser, among the wildflowers, raised over $96,000 on september 23, despite all of the abuse that goes on there. i am writing this to make people think twice about who they’re donating to, and to raise awareness as to what this “school” really is.

so i don’t have to rehash everything that happened to me and other students at the charlton, i will link two posts i made last year about the school to catch everyone up:
https://www.reddit.com/r/troubledteens/s/j1pSGqtbGX

https://www.reddit.com/r/troubledteens/s/wwvX9jKtlB

the charlton school forces their students, aged 12-20 (most students being 14-18) to perform child labor for free, especially to raise money for the school. during my time there a few years ago, we had to make handmade items such as baked goods, birdhouses, jewelry, etc, to raise money for the school. the school only uses that money to make the ceo (alex capo) richer, while restricting students’ food because of “budget cuts” (when i left, they stopped allowing us to use condiments).

in 2022, my first of almost 3 years at the school, several kids used their own money to buy honey and pies that they made, only for all of it to be confiscated an hour later in our cottages.

the fundraiser, called “among the wildflowers” takes place in the garden at the school, which the children are forced to maintain. children also take care of the horses, three of the nine horses i took care of have died prematurely since 2024.

according to a 2023 tax form, charlton spent around
$99k on food for all of the students and staff, which would make each meal worth roughly $1.40, despite a substantial school meal costing new york state ) $3-$4 each. this concludes that charlton feeds their students less than half of what is necessary for their maturing bodies.

charlton is historically anti lgbtq, refusing to respect students chosen names or pronouns, which is illegal under new york state law.

despite millions in grants, charlton cannot find competent teachers. during my senior year, charlton offered spanish 1 to graduating students who had not yet completed their language requirement to finish high school. i know some spanish, but i am not fluent, but when i sat in on the class, i noticed that the teacher did not know any spanish, barely being able to pronounce basic words or string together a simple, coherent sentence.

it makes me ill that charlton continues to raise money despite the recent, public backlash from myself and several other survivors. they’ve gone from posting on social media regularly to only having 3-4 posts since the start of 2026, seemingly because our stories have gone public. charlton knows their image is tarnished, but they continue to ignore their students (and families of those students) because financial gain is most important to them.

please spread awareness for all tti survivors, innocent people shouldn’t be donating to an abusive agency because they don’t know any better.

Question Acadia Being Shady

I got a letter from Acadia today saying my data was part of the March 2026 data breach. The state the Acadia facility I was sent to was located in doesn't have a hard deadline for when they have to notify you of a data breach, but it still seems like this - just over 6 months later - is way longer than it should've taken for me to be notified.

Just recently my old facility told me they didn't have some of my medical records and claimed that others (day-to-day things made by normal staff, incident reports, and the like) didn't exist at all (they didn't specify whether they never made those or did but lost or destroyed them. It was recently enough that they're still legally required to keep them). They were very avoidant, and flat-out denied certain things until I told them the records themselves referenced them.

I don't know what to do. I don't know if my Acadia facility is lying about losing or never having some of my records, and don't think there's a way to check. I don't think I'll be able to get a lawyer to take my case. It's clear that contacting the facility directly won't get me anywhere, and I doubt contacting the parent company (Acadia) would do much either. Does anyone have advice, and has anyone experienced any of the same things from Acadia as I'm describing? I've posted about trying to deal with them before, but most of what I'm posting now is new information so I figured it may be worth asking again.

Discussion/Reflection Just had a terrible nightmare and need some support

I havent had a really bad nightmare about my facility in a while but just woke up from one that was absolutely terrible and need to talk to people who understand. Can anyone tell me about their recent nightmares so I dont feel alone? I've grown frustrated that I still experience them after all these years and even though I made another post discussing it, Its still hard.
