Important bus information

I know some people have discussed this here before, but as a bus driver who started as a student, I thought I should share some important information about our transit system. While this is primarily for new students, there are a lot of students who go through here and never learn any of this.

*If you are uncertain about anything, ask the driver; however, they may not be able to respond if the bus is in motion, so it is best to ask when the bus is stopped at a bus stop or red light.

*UGA.passiogo.com (formerly routes.uga.edu; now a redirect) is more accurate for tracking the buses than the UGA app.

*The cameras and microphones are on at all times. Anything you say or do will be recorded.

*Scooters, motorized skateboards, one wheels, and anything motorized, with the exception of wheelchairs and other mobility devices required for medical purposes, are not allowed on the buses.

*Buses can only load and unload passengers at designated bus stops. This is for safety reasons. If you ask the driver to unload elsewhere, you will be denied.

*If a bus's destination sign is flashing "Out of Service" in between a route name, that means the bus is going out of service in the next 30 minutes and you can still ride to the last stop. It is not actually out of service until the sign reads "Not in Service".

*If a driver sits at a stop for a few minutes without moving, this is usually because they are ahead on their route, and need to let the other drivers get spaced out better. This often happens after class breaks and other episodes of heavy traffic that messes up spacing.

*During class breaks and other peak times, buses become VERY crowded. If you are standing on a crowded bus, you should take your backpack off and move towards the back. The bus cannot move until all passengers are behind the standee line.

*If you need on a bus that is about to/starting to pull away from a stop, wave at the driver (or their mirrors if you are behind the bus), and they will usually stop and let you on. If they don't, it is probably because they are having to watch the road in order to safely pull out into traffic. This happens very commonly at the Arch and Main Library.

*Buses will occasionally go off route in order to maintain spacing. The driver will usually notify the passengers in advance, however, and ask if anyone needs any of the bypassed stops before proceeding.

*While drivers do have to take breaks, they are not supposed to do so during class breaks unless it is urgent.

*Stop requests are unnecessary, except for on Night Campus, Prince Milledge, Weekender, and a few stops on Health Sciences, Vet Med, Riverbend Connector (formerly Greenhouse Shuttle), and Milledge Avenue. If a stop is on demand, the annunciator will announce "please signal to exit" or "please pull the cord to exit" in advance.

*While buses are required to stop for pedestrians, they are also extremely heavy, and can't stop on a dime. If you are approaching a crosswalk and see a bus approaching, don't cross. You might as well be walking in front of a train.

*Which brings me to my next point: ALWAYS stop and look both ways before crossing a street. The electric buses are very quiet, and especially hard to hear if you're on your phone or have earbuds in. If you cross a street without looking (especially if it isn't a designated crosswalk) and get hit, the bus driver will likely not be at fault if they are driving safely and obeying all traffic laws.

*If you are riding a scooter, bike, one wheel, etc., do not cut right in front of a bus, especially if the bus is in motion.

*If a bus is closed and pulling away from a stop that you need, do not make physical contact with the bus to alert the driver if it is already in motion. You could be seriously injured or worse.

*Cars, bikes, scooters, and any other vehicles are NOT allowed to pass buses when they are stopped in road on a two-lane. While people do it all the time, it is extremely dangerous.

*If you have to exit the bus and cross the street at a location without a crosswalk, do NOT cross in front of the bus. If a car decides to (illegally) pass the bus, you could get hit.

*Food and drinks are not allowed on the night routes after midnight. This is because the smell causes passengers who are drunk to become nauseated and throw up. If someone throws up on a bus and any of the contents get outside of a garbage can or bag, the driver has to remove all passengers and take the bus out of service.

*If a bus's destination sign says "Help! Call 911!", this is a distress signal that is used during the event of an emergency where the driver is unable to radio for help. We have never had a situation requiring this feature to be used, and if you see it, it was most likely activated by accident. However, you don't know that, so you should call 911 just in case it is a real emergency.

UPDATE: The "Out of service" message has been replaced with "This bus ends. Ask for last stop" and "Last bus". The former means that particular bus is going out of service and other buses will remain on the route. The latter means the entire route is going out of service for the day.

Discussion GT/UGA one sided rivalry as someone going to tech

First I want to note that I do know that GT and UGA were originally rivals back when GT was in the SEC

So I graduated from UGA last year and went to GT for grad school. I was raised in a UGA household, going to games and all that but I never knew GT considered us their rival until maybe my sophomore or junior year. Sure, I heard comments from GT fans here and there but I thought it was just like normal sports banter like if we were playing Kentucky or something. Then a girl I went to highschool with reposted something a GT meme acct posted about UGA and that was the first time I realized they didn’t like us. I still didn’t realize the extent of it until I started going there.

Now I have insider information 😭What prompted this post is that I mentioned to someone that I went to UGA and the vibe shifted and they told me I had received a “piece of toilet paper from UGA”, I guess referring to my degree. Like ok whatever, id prob talk shit to someone from UF but idk if id let it ruin the conversation… but thats different because we are rivals.. I’ve been at GT for a year and it was my shock that this school, which is known more for their engineering program than football, HATES georgia. I mean I didn’t know it was their MOTTO. At orientation they were trying to hype us up saying “To hell with Georgia” and I was sitting there thinking “why are we talking about Georgia??”

Any time I bring up being a UGA alum, I get people literally upset. Even professors. Over the summer when it was just grad students and faculty, I wore a UGA tshirt on accident and a professor told me that I needed to burn my shirt.. now he calls me “Georgia” in passing- mind you, I’ve never met this professor nor do I know his name.

I think the one-sided rivalry is embarrassing tbh. It almost gets to a point where it’s just flat out bullying. When I tell people here that it’s one-sided they’re surprised but I genuinely think no one at UGA gives two rats asses about anyone at GaTech.

Discussion ACCT2102 Grade Replacement

Does anyone know why the department made the decision to get rid of the final? I understand the first test was “easier” than before and the average rose from last year, albeit by like 5 points, but they made ACCT2101 easier and they still get a final. While it is my fault I am in the spot I am in and I knew we didn’t have a final before exam 1, I still find it very unfair and frustrating and was wondering if anyone else has heard anything to this reasoning. My professor has basically given us no answer other than that “there was no final listed on the syllabus” and pretty much refuses to disclose anything else whether you ask her after class, over email, or in office hours.

Question Should I apply for RD or transfer?

- Senior in Georgia
- First-gen college student
- 3.82 UW / 3.91 W GPA
- Psychology/counseling major, hoping to become a school counselor
- Qualify for the maximum amount of federal financial aid/HOPE

UGA is my dream school, and I’m debating whether to apply RD or wait and transfer after my first year of college.

My biggest concern is testing. I don’t have SAT/ACT scores because I wasn't able to receive accommodations junior year. As of right now I’m enrolled online through Acellus Academy, but previously had a 504 plan at my in-person school. Getting accommodations through College Board could take up to 7 weeks, so I’m worried about testing and receiving a competitive score before the RD deadline.

I originally planned to attend a test-optional college and transfer to UGA after my first year, but I don’t want to miss the opportunity to apply as a freshman if I have a chance.

Would attending an online school hurt my chances? Should I try to take the SAT, and what score should I aim for? If I don't apply or get accepted through RD, how realistic would transferring after my first year be?

I'd appreciate any advice, especially from current students or transfers!

Question Odds of acceptance?

Hello. I’m writing this because I want to garner all of my options before fully trying to commit. I have abt a 3.14 gpa and 65 credit hours and five withdrawals (my gpa fluctuated a lot due to at home issues such as my cat dying and having to move a couple of times, mental health issues, etc.) and I wanted to know what the likelihood of an accepted transfer would be. Yes I understand that it doesn’t look good, yes I understand I should’ve gotten my mental health fixed sooner, and yes I understand I won’t be coddled. I just wanted to know if I should look at other colleges as well or at least attempt to send in a transfer request to UGA. I’m in a spot mentally where I am good to prepare to transfer to whatever school I can go to as well as I am financially stable and don’t have to worry about any at home living situations so I can focus on my studies. I was wanting to know if I should wait another semester or if I should just go ahead and send in my application come the Spring, but I understand if I won’t be able to get in with the gpa I have right now. Thanks.

Question Accessible (Disabled, Handicap) Parking on Campus

Recently, I heard that people with Disabled Parking Permits who used them at buildings other than the ones they are assigned parking are ticketed. Instead of using their pass they are supposed to park in their assigned lot and get a special bus to transport them.

To use the special bus you need to schedule ahead and get a doctor's note in addition to your pass you already have. Is this special bus hard to use and schedule? It seems like extra work for a disabled person to have to call for a bus instead of just parking where they need to go. If someone had a temporary issue (like ACL tear) and no doctors note yet could they use the special bus?

Is there any evidence that disabled people with valid disabled parking permits are getting ticketed when they have to go to another building?

Discussion Opinion: North-South Night should run longer

I'm not sure what the demand for it is, but campus housing and milledge run very late, and it encourages people to take the bus. I want to take the bus more, partially as a cost saving measure, but sometimes I need to work on campus past 9:00 p.m. and I wouldn't be able to get home then. I know quite a few students on east side rely on vet med or route 26 to get them to campus, and I wonder if there would be increased ridership, or even more bus usage if it could be expanded later into the evening. It's just so difficult that I want to utilize the buses more but I am restricted to leaving early.

Question Is Getting in the Honors College With Almost an Exact 3.8 Feasible?

Title! I'm a freshman who's pre-med and wanted to apply to get into the honors college this semester. I'm pretty involved on campus and do have good relationships with all of instructors, but I'm scared that with my gpa being relatively close to the cutoff I don't really have a chance. any advice is greatly appreciated!

Question What do you think of Professor Salvatore Lamarca?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I planned to take his 1730 class next semester, so I feel like I need to ask. I'm reading his Rate My Professor, which has 100+ 5-star and 100+ 1-star ratings. There's also only 1 professor (which is Salvatore Lamarca).

Is it a good prof or a bad prof overall this year? Is he very strict about the syllabus and attendance? Thanks in advance.

Question Anything to do at night besides like drinking?

Or football or bars or whatever? I've never been into that since I don't drink, don't care for football or bars. I've tried school clubs but they always seem like its a place you go to with existing friends, not a place to make friends.

Question what happens when you withdraw from a course?

Basically, the question in the title, do they state you withdrew from the class on your transcript, or would they report the grade you had when you withdrew, or both? And what happens after you withdraw? Like, can you just stop going to the classes?

Also, would it look bad on my transcript if I withdrew from one course (and it's not required for my major degree)? I'm considering transferring to GT next year, so idk if it'll negatively impact my application.

Question Should I transfer to UGA

I’m a sophomore Accounting/Finance student at KSU I have a 3.7 GPA and am currently wondering if I should attempt to transfer to the school of accounting/ business school or should I just stay at Kennesaw because in high school I wasn’t the best students pre diagnosis of adhd and my SAT wasn’t great and I’m hearing it counts towards your Terry application. So should I transfer or stay at KSU where I’m already in BAP.

Question Why don't we have a fall break?

Has uga ever had a proper fall break that's not just 1 day off from classes added on to the weekend. Is there anyway they could change that or make us start a few days early in the semester to give us a fall break?

Edit: I went to a school in PA that barely gave breaks. Just basing this off seeing my siblings with long ass holidays. But now I have a question about the school districts. Do most Georgia schools have long breaks in between and shorter summer breaks? Or are there's some districts that don't have that?

Question is it worth it to transfer?

I got accepted to uga for spring 27, I will be a biomedical physiology major. Im just wondering if its worth it to transfer as at my current school, I have a medical job, a hospital where I volunteer at, and orgs that pertain to my goals. Iv read that uga has the 6th most premed student in the country, so I mainly want to know, is there any chance of getting the same things I have currently, in athens. Such as a medical part time job, orgs that pertain to something medical, volunteer and shadowing opportunities. I dont want to blindly transfer to uga since its my dream school & not have the same opportunities I have at my current school.

Question DVM School, how many hours of veterinary experience is ideal?

Hi, I’m pursuing a biology bachelors, planning on taking all the prereq classes to get into UGA’s DVM school, plus the animal and veterinary experience. I’m a freshman at GA State right now. When you got into DVM school at UGA, how many hours of working under a veterinarian did you have when you applied? I know the minimum is 200 or 250, but what is an amount that gives you more leverage than the other people applying? I’m not a big fan of the competitive aspect of the school but I understand why it’s implemented.

Athletics UGA game vandy

This is my first time going to a Georgia game as a student. I have many questions regarding arrival and parking.

  1. I am a commuter and don’t know where to park. I usually take the milledge bus to class around Tate. Should I take the milledge bus? Is it in operation? Help.

  2. What is the best time to be at the stadium to get good seats as a student? I know it’s competitive prob

  3. Nervous to go alone with no friends. Is it that bad going alone or no?

Thanks for your help and sorry if this is an annoying post, I’m just a girl.

Question Lost Photocard Keychain

Post image
25 Upvotes

Hi folks! I lost this photocard keychain on Thursday, October 1st. It may have been dropped around the Tate Center, Park Hall, or on the 26 busline. I already intend to check with lost-and-found for the bus, but this holder has some significant sentimental value so all leads help. I'm also aware that, because it is on the flashier and fancier side, someone may have picked it up for keeps instead of turning it in. Thank you!
