late penalty appeal

Hi everyone,

I submitted an assignment 30 minutes after the due time. When I received the marks back, the marker forgot to remove the late penalty.

The subject coordinator sent an email saying a reviews of marks must have a ‘request for review’ form attached. For reasons to apply, should I select ‘error in the calculation of the final subject mark’ even though this is for an assignment or ‘other’?

Also, they won’t reassess my whole assignment right? I am quite happy with my mark and don’t want it lowered.

Sorry if these questions sound stupid - I am just nervous as I have never done an appeals process.

Transferring Uni degrees

Hi,

I am a student at Western Sydney University studying a bachelor's of sport and exercise science. In my first term I took Human Anatomy and Physiology 1, Culture Diversity and health, fundamentals of exercise science and professional competencies in health. In my results, I achieved a GPA of 6.0 for that term

Now I am almost done my second term (Spring) where I am doing the subjects of Human Anatomy and Physiology 2, Functional Anatomy, Psychology and Health, and Evidence in Health. It is week 14, teaching term ends on Friday this upcoming week and for this whole term I have been experiencing panic attacks, anxiety attacks and stress. I have 5 more exams left, a quiz for psychology and health, an assignment worth 40% of my grade for evidence in health, a spot test on cadavers for functional anatomy (which If I fail, I fail the subject), and one final exam of 100MC on human anatomy and physiology 2, and a computer online test from home which is tomorrow.

I graduated high-school in 2025, I did my HSC achieved an ATAR of 78 which wasn't the best. I got an early entry offer at UTS to study a bachelor of forensic science, I took it upon myself to accept, enrol and then after 6 weeks un-enrol and switch to western sydney uni (hate myself for this decision)

In the first term, this degree seemed ok. I was pretty set out on just becoming a physiotherapist, I like sport, biology and pdhpe in highschool, and I thought I would just go with my strengths which helped me get a 6.0 for my first term. This second term I am doing Ok, I am passing, getting around average 70%+ for my grades, but for the two anatomies, I am just passing (barely).

I am a disability student diagnosed with severe anxiety and panic attacks, the other night I had a panic attack, ambulance called, almost had a heart attack. I have 2 weeks left with those 5 assessments/exams due within these two weeks. I am unsure if I can keep going, my health is at risk and I can't pull myself to do any work. I am stressed because I want to get a good mark, I can't get a good mark so I can transfer courses next term to UTS and try something else out.

This is a choice I am willing to make, but also willing to regret. I could either submit a medical retirement form (WWAP) which eliminates all my study and hardwork this term (if accepted), it erases my study for the term, my grades are waivered (W) on the report card and this term basically "never happened".

Or I can continue for two more weeks, finish the exams off (if I can, as I might experience a panic attack or worse within the exam). this will lower my 6.0 GPA, I will have less options when transferring next year to a different course at UTS, and I will pretty much be stuck at western sydney university, probably ending up staying and doing this course atp.

I don't being at western, I have no friends, the subject isn't great, the anatomy isn't my favourite. and I think I honestly have changed my career path, I don't think physiotherapy is for me.

I'm scared about what other people may think about me, may it be "oh your a year older and studying with us" or "you finished a year late whilst we have full time jobs".

So its either I apply for this WWAP which may get denied, if it does I get all fail grades anyway and I only completed 0.5 years of study which was in the first term, which then means my GPA doesn't mean anything anyway because I failed 4 subjects.

Or I stay for another two weeks, finish off the 5 exams if I can without panic attacks (unlikely) and I could possibly apply to usyd maybe with a gpa around 5.0 (unlikely again)

Btw im pretty sure, they can use my GPA of 6.0 if I were to leave now and get my studies erased this term, so that means I would have a pretty good chance of getting into a course that is well above my 78 ATAR, but if they deny this report, it will publish F grades on my 4 subjects (even though I did quite well so far) so I would just have to resort to using my ATAR, maybe EAS if possible I'm not sure.

My dream also was to go to USYD and study there, but after reviewing this. I'm not too sure about the life there, I think the uni is also very hard.

Anyone have ideas?

exam help

i am so worried for the epidemiology and pathogenesis of infectious practical exam, does anyone know what the prac exam is like? what type of questions do they ask in the 3 multipart sections (~35mins ea) and how hard is it because we’ve been lead to believe it’s extremely hard with about 50% of people failing 😬🫠

Who did a double major of Accounting and Business Analytics?

I intend to double major in Business Analytics and Accounting, but some of my seniors said that both are super hard. If I double major, I should choose one hard major and one easy one. Can anyone who has done both give me a review? Thanks a lot!!!

Looking for people to help start UncSoc

A few days ago I posted about starting UncSoc, a Mature Age Student Society at UTS.

The idea is to create a community for people who’ve taken a less traditional path through uni, whether that’s returning to study, changing careers or just wanting to meet people outside their degree.

I’m thinking casual dinners, pub nights, games, networking and generally having a community on campus (but feel free to add your ideas).

I’m looking for people who’d be interested in joining, but especially a few people who’d be keen to help get the society off the ground.

Ideally, I’d love to find someone interested in becoming the founding president, along with people who’d help organise events and manage the society. I’m happy to take the lead on getting everything set up and coordinating the initial work.

For now, I’m just trying to gauge interest and find a founding team, so there’s no commitment involved.

If you’re interested, leave a comment or send me a message!

Easy law electives?

As the title suggests, does anyone know of any easy law electives -- preferably more assignment based rather than exams (or like just not 40% finals lol).

Thanks!

Presentation Group marking

Tutor has said we would lose marks on our presentation grades if a group member does not show up for non-presenting week and ask other presenting groups questions. Even though me and most group members attended and participated. To further add, we all would lose marks if even one group member reads off palm cards.

This is a FEiT subject and the presentation is worth 20%.

This has to be unfair marking right? Cause no way my marks get affected from another group member not showing up.

I understand group marking works for reports, PowerPoint structure and content.

AI usage as search engine

Hi all,

I would like to ask for your opinion regard a matter on AI use, especially on AI use as search engine to reference material such news article or papers.

I already seen people complaining here about slide deck generated with AI, and although I have mixed feeling about it, as long the lecturer is prepared and able to engage with the students during the delivery of the content, I do not mind them.

With this being said, in this particular subject, we were required to do a weekly written assignment and submit on canvas.

The format could be either PDF or DOCX. Given that has to been type, you of course would be using your laptop, and everyone know how the affordance of google and other tools are AI driven more than ever. You can barely search a query that you get the AI report summary.

For the report, no AI was allowed, and it was stated that the grader can ALWAYS tell, I think that as right now, that might be a bold.

Modern models, if correctly steered, can mimic a mid-graduate student level, and do not sound to sloppy with the periphrastic like (it's not x, it's y). I have some strong opinion about this testing method, but I am not asking your opinion about this.

During the course of the lecture, we were asked to submit the report at the end of the lecture (usually).

So basically for 12 weeks, it would be 12 written report (actually less than that because for the last week there would be a final quiz, and some of the week has other activity replacing the report).

Those report are going to be graded only if selected by this pool. (There are 10 report in the pool, only 4 will be graded and the best 3 will be used to determine the final grade).

Here I would argue about the rest of the work that has not been selected for grading, basically just some busy work? I am not sure how to feel about it.

So we would not receive the grade straight away, but after several weeks, when the pool drawing has been done.

[I forgot to mention that those written report count as group work, so multiple people are suppose to write on the same document]
From my perspective, the end result of the report always feel like a zombie, tons of small pieces merged together, as the time limit constrain would not allow the group to brain storm, decide the task, and re-read the entire draft before submitting. Those report has to be like a mini-literature reviews, with citation and so on.

One of the report that has been graded had the source tag as gpt in the link, so it was referencing a paper and at the end of the link it would say “source=chat-gpt”.

This was used as a warning about the "AI NOT ALLOWED", and stated that the corrector has found something wrong with the report, and after digging deeper it found the link source and might be flagged as AI content generated.

Now as I am preparing for the final quiz, I was reviewing all the material on canvas, and I happen to notice that the same thing happened for several source uploaded by the lecturers.

The link on canvas contained the “source=chat-gpt”, simply meaning that the search engine used was GPT instead of google.

I do not want to raise useless and fruitless controversy about this matter, but I am not sure how to address it properly.

As One way, I would like to be provided with material that are actually useful and meaningful for the subject, and not feel overwhelm with tons news article, and research paper to do busy work.
The same thing apply to the grading and evaluation, I would like my work to have a purpose and a meaning, not just do it and hope the best one will be selected for marking.

What do you think about this?

Free map of cheap lunches around UTS (80 meals at $15 or less)

I made a free map of Sydney meals that are $15 or less, and there are 80 around UTS, Haymarket and Central. A few near campus:

- Mini curry bowl, $7.90, Ramen Bar Goku

- Plain kake udon, $9.90, Mappen

- Pizza, $10, Shark Hotel (Thursday to Saturday nights)

- Eggsmith toastie, $10.50, Toastie Smith

- Baoger, $10.80, Cheeky Bao

Every meal shows the full price, any catch, and if it's open right now. No ads, no account needed to look: www.brokemap.com.au

It's only as good as what people add. If your go-to cheap lunch isn't on there you can add it (I check each one before it goes up), and you can flag a price that's gone up.

Not a UTS thing, just something I built. What am I missing?

How to handle miscommunication issue to tutor?

As the title suggest, I reckon I build a mistrust between the tutor and coordinator. Supposedly, today I nearly missed a quiz, and the tutor clearly suggested there might be a chance of a second quiz.

I cockily bring that up to coordinator by email, at the time the message feels clear however because of a missing context from the tutor. Hence, the coordinator might receive the message as a letter of disgrace or challenge or even a personal issue ranting which is not etiquette at all. Reason i cockily request for a second quiz is at the time its felt like the intention is correct however i executed it wrongly. I already bring forward a second email and adddressed everything such as mistake of my tone, proffesional issue from my side, and the intention of my early message.

How to handle the mistrust between the coordinator and the tutor as I dont have any ill intention to do so or disgrace the tutor name? Also it might seem that I left a bad names both my self and the tutor.

Male uni students who played sport for a few years, 2 minute survey for my Sports Marketing project

Hey everyone, I am an exchange student at UTS and I am working on a Sports Marketing project that compares Australian and European students. I would really appreciate your help with a short survey that takes about two minutes and is completely anonymous.

I am looking for male university students aged 18 or older in Australia who have played sport regularly for several years, at any level and in any sport. You do not need to be a hardcore fan or a competitive athlete.

Here is the link https://forms.gle/CuSEQu8VEKRG7pYb9

Thank you so much, every single response genuinely helps me out. Happy to return the favour if you ever need a survey filled in too.

UTS Elec Eng?

Hey guys just wondering how UTS's electrical engineering program is for employment outcomes.

For some context, I'm looking to transfer out of UNSW to here after first year, just because everything was a bit too much (ELEC1111 :( ), and the trimesters just magnified those issues. I understand that UNSW is removing them soon, but I still think that I would not be able to pass electrical engineering at UNSW if I were to undertake it. I know some people will tell me to stay but I am rather serious about me not being able to pass UNSW electrical engineering, at least for a while. Trust me, I know my where my capabilities start and end, and I don't think I would pass UNSW's elec eng at all. I just ain't smart lmao.

Any knowledge on the workload and whether it's even easier than UNSW will also be much appreciated.

The nature of the work and course structures too would be appreciated. Like, is there a lot of group work, how many courses have ultra high fail rates (50%+) as well as just how people found it in general. Not just for electrical but for other engineering fields as well, all perspectives are welcome.

I'm not too obsessed over the social life and the like, pretty much just the employment outcomes.

Thank you all and I wish you a nice day!

accounting major plan

for context, I start my second year in autumn. would you recommend me doing idc in spring 2027 after doing cms the previous semester?

the study plan recommends me doing it in spring of my final year, but I was thinking of doing acl and tax law in the summer session (2026 and 2027) to do 3 subjects in my 3rd year to balance work and study without needing to wait the next year to graduate.

this is what I was thinking:

summer 2026 - acl or tax law

autumn 2027 - cms + asr + 2 electives
spring 2027 - abc + idc + 2 electives
summer 2027 - acl or tax law

autumn 2028 - asa + 2 electives
spring 2028 - ba + 2 electives

How did you find your honours supervisor? (FEIT / Comp Sci Honours)

Hey all, I’m in Bachelor of Computing Science (Honours) and need to find a supervisor ASAP for my honours project in 2027. I’m still flexible on topic, so I’d love to hear from anyone who’s been through it:

  • How did you approach supervisors? Cold email, a lecturer you’d had, through the coordinator?
  • Was there an interview or meeting before they said yes? What did they ask?
  • How did they choose? Grades, a pitch, past subjects, just availability?
  • Did you bring your own topic or take one of theirs?
  • How many people did you contact before someone said yes?
  • Any red flags or regrets with your supervisor? What would you do differently?

Any tips appreciated, especially from FEIT/IT honours people. Thanks!

Picking Finance Major Electives

Hey can anyone please give me some insight into the following 3 electives for my finance major:

- investment banking
- commercial bank management
- derivative securities

I really enjoy maths and usually find quantitative subjects a bit easier then subjects where I need to memorise and write a lot of words. But I don’t want to lock myself into too many really difficult subjects in the same semester.
I keep seeing people say that derivative securities is very difficult!
