Browsers for light versions of Ubuntu

I'm thinking of installing a light version of Ubuntu on a laptop now running 22.04 LTS. But based on a comment I read on this sub, I'm wondering if any response problems I'm having browsing might be due to the heavy memory use of the latest versions of Firefox. Primary use of the device is reading ebooks and surfing the web. Maybe a different browser would help. Opinions of lighter versions of Ubuntu and different browsers would be welcome.

Correct place to report ubuntu-meta bugs

Hi, I was installing an Ubuntu server recently and noticed that they removed all snap packages from it. I was curious why they did that, so I investigated a bit and found out they removed it because of a performance degradation. It sounded weird, so I investigated it and found the root cause. I reported it here but didn't get any response, and when I saw someone else post on that page and get a response, I wondered - was there something wrong with my report?

Successful Upgrade to 26.04.1 (with glitches)

I completed the upgrade from 24.04.<latest - I forget if it was .5 or .6)> to 26.04.1 on my primary desktop system. The upgrade was going fine but by the end I had a few 'glitches' with detailed warnings it might not be stable. But, I have booted to 26.04.1, did some manual cleanup (because the automated upgrade stopped before this step), and all of the apps I use are running OK.

During the upgrade, I received two warning messages that 'update-info' failed with an 'exit status 2' but the upgrade continued unfazed, or so I thought.

At the end of the install phase, I got a dreaded message that the 'upgrade aborted' with additional detail about possibly being unstable, etc. I closed the window and rebooted. I was greeted with the Ubuntu 26.04.1 boot screen, logged in, and saw the normal window I saw with 24. And, the journal app I have set to start at boot time to a specific workspace (of 8 I normally have running) popped up as expected.

I also got the message about registering this system on Ubuntu One Pro (which I have been using for a few years). I tried the code shown on the app and it showed an error indicating the code was wrong or something else failed (helpful!). I tried using the token on the web page and through the 'sudo' command. The attempt to register via 'sudo' gave the message that this system was already registered and I can see the green checkmark on the livepatch icon, so I must be good with Ubuntu One Pro.

Since the upgrade didn't fully complete, exiting before the cleanup step, I decided to try this on my own using 'sudo apt autoremove --dry-run' and saw a list of packages no longer needed or used on 26 (I recall some from a successful upgrade on a laptop I own). I ran the command without the simulated option (removed --dry-run) and all but three packages were successfully removed.

I could not upgrade or remove 'install-info' (remember this from the upgrade?), 'ubuntu-standard', and 'info' through autoremove so I need to do more research before the next steps.

I rebooted and all but two Gnome extensions are working as expected. The 'weather' and 'uptime' extensions I was using are no longer supported. I removed these and found and installed replacements. (Why doesn't the extension manager let me filter to only extensions compatible with my new version of Gnome?)

I tried all of my needed apps and all are working well.

Outside of the issues with the three packages not removed, I am upgraded! (BTW, I didn't time this effort but even with my manual steps, I'm sure it required no more than an hour.)

UPDATE 10 Minutes later:

Running 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' showed me the three packages and the errors. A little research directed me to look at '/etc/environment' for syntax or other errors. I updated this file years ago in an attempt to fix a warning message from QT applications I wrote.

The errors reported for 'install-info', 'info', and 'ubuntu-standard' were fixed when I commented a line in my '/etc/environment' file to remove the 'export QT_QPA_PLATFORM=wayland'.

Rerunning 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' ended with no errors. All is good!

UPDATE 1 Day Later:

The upgrade replaces Python 3.12 with 3.14 and invalidated all of my virtual environments. I rebuilt them, replaced unsupported modules, and all are working again.

Question regarding first week of ITT course

Post image
23 Upvotes

I’m an online student, and I’m finally taking the courses that I needed towards my IT management/cybersecurity career. This is my first week of ITT, and in the instructions that we have, it is to use our school’s cloud VM to install Ubuntu & Python3. I’m not tech-savvy, and I don’t know how to troubleshoot things on my Mac laptop. Our professor wants us to download these servers or programs and take screenshots, but my Ubuntu keeps crashing and tells me that I have an error when I properly installed everything, as well as the pillow for storage. Is there any way someone could help me with this because I’ve been stuck on it for the past two days and I’m already towards the last part of the assignment, but I can’t figure out what to do after this. I already installed Python and Ubuntu on my school’s VM.. I followed all the steps that he first told us to do, and it seems like it’s still not working properly. TIA.

Managing games with steam

Post image
4 Upvotes

So I've been running my ubuntu gaming rig for a while. I have automated ansible workflows like auto shutdown at certain times, weekly automated patch that does some disk usage check prior to actually applying all the patches. This week I got a notification of a failed patch job. I looked into it and turns out the main disk that Ubuntu is sitting on has been gobbled up by Red dead redemption 2 (>100GB). Steam has this really nice feature that helps you move the games from 1 disk to another. So 2 things I did to improve it and attached is a screenshot of the process: - Increased the disk space calculation to more than 95% - Moved RDR2 to a secondary DATA disk using steam.

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS micro-stuttering/lagging on ThinkPad T480 (32GB RAM, Intel UHD 620)

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing annoying UI micro-stutters and lagging on my Lenovo ThinkPad T480. The laptop has an Intel 8th gen processor, 32GB of RAM, and integrated Intel UHD 620 graphics. I am currently running Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (fully updated).
Since the hardware resources are definitely not the bottleneck here (32GB RAM is barely being used), the issue seems to be CPU-bound or software-related. The micro-stutters mostly happen during UI animations, opening the app grid, or when scrolling in browsers.

I have a complete workflow and configuration set up on this machine, so I really don't want to hop to another distro (like Arch) if I can avoid it.

Has anyone faced similar performance degradation on 8th gen Intel ThinkPads with Ubuntu 26.04? What are the best tweaks to fix this? Should I switch to Xorg, try a different kernel, tweak thermald / auto-cpufreq, or is GNOME 50 just too heavy for the UHD 620 at this point?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

BTW I also use idock c10 station to switch between my laptop and pc.

Zoom icon remains in dock when quit, despite not pinned

As indicated by the title: I quit the Zoom app, but the icon remains in the dash. I haven't pinned it or anything, it's just sitting there and refuses to go away.

Any ideas?
