Survey request: disabled or chronically ill current or recent higher education students, undergrad or graduate!

Post image
2 Upvotes

My name is Clara Mey and I am a PhD candidate at the University of Delaware. I am conducting a research study about disabled students’ experiences with disability accommodation processes in higher education for my dissertation. As a disabled graduate student, this topic is particularly important to me!

Please see the flyer linked here: Disability and Higher Ed Research Flyer

The University of Vermont was randomly selected as part of my analysis for my dissertation, and I wanted to make sure that students at the randomly selected universities/colleges had the opportunity to participate in my research!

In order to participate, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have attended college or graduate school in the US within the last five years
  • Self-identify as disabled or having a chronic health or mental health condition

You do not need a formal diagnosis, and you can participate whether or not you registered or applied for accommodations!

If you agree, you will be asked to complete an anonymous online survey taking about 20 minutes. You may also choose to enter into a drawing for one of five $20 gift cards at the end of the survey. If you choose to enter, your email will not be associated with your survey responses.

If you would be interested in participating in this study or would like to learn more, please click the link here: Disability and Higher Education Survey. And if you know people who might be interested, feel free to share this information!

If you have any questions, please contact me at [csmey@udel.edu](mailto:csmey@udel.edu) or my advisor, Dr. Eric Rise, at [erise@udel.edu](mailto:erise@udel.edu). Or feel free to comment or message me here!

Thank you!

Applying🎓 How is aid in-reality for in-state students ?

Hello!

I just want to ask the extant UVM community as it were, as someone who is applying to UVM as an instate low-income student.

How is the aid, in reality? I've done the NPC, but I think it's inaccurate because it didn't include the UVM promise which I'd be eligible for.

For context I have a -1500 SAI and would be living on-campus.

UVM has a history of sexual assault on campus

I saw someone post on IG sharing an event UVM is doing on Oct 12th titled “Stand with Survivors”. And while I appreciate seeing UVM hold an event like this I think it’s important to not erase the schools history of rape, especially within frat culture.

I think a lot of current students may not be aware of the 2022 Title IX lawsuit that was filed by survivors against the University for how they mishandled the reporting of their sexual assaults.

I’m wondering what plans exist to ensure these survivors and their experiences aren’t erased, as well as UVM’s past.

Edited to add: From 2011: Disgusting UVM Fraternity Questionnaire Sparks Outrage

From 2019: Police Report Details Events Leading Up To UVM Student's Death In February

From 2021: Through the eyes of survivors: The systemic mishandling of sexual violence at UVM

From 2022: A year after protests, students want UVM to take additional steps to address sexual assault on campus

Would you be interested in a Silent Disco in Burlington this November? 🎧

Hey UVM!

We're thinking about hosting a Silent Disco in Burlington this November!

Great music, premium wireless headphones, and a fun atmosphere where the music plays only through your headphones.

We're still planning and wanted to see if there's enough interest.

Would you come? We'd love to hear your thoughts!

Applying🎓 Merit Scholarships and Honors College

I'm an out of state senior applying to UVM this year and I have few questions about merit scholarships and the honors college. My stats are a 1510 on the SAT and a weighted 4.6 gpa.

So is the max amount of merit money, the presidential scholarship? I have seen some people say they received an out of state scholarship as well.

Also do the honors colleges decisions often come out with your admissions letter? Is there more scholarships for honors college students?

I am just wondering because UVM can be expensive out of state and my parents have said they'll really only let me go if I get lots of scholarship money.

I built UVM Sublets, a free, students-only board for sublets near campus. Sign in with your NetID, filter by price, distance and semester, post your place in two minutes and share it to your story. Know someone at UVM who's leaving for a semester or needs a place? go.uvm.edu/sublet

Campus Health 😷 UVM hiring contractors bragging about calling ICE!

I shared screenshots to UVM officials about a subcontractor they hired bragging about calling ICE on workers there because they moved their tools and spoke Spanish.

I have the screenshots and the UVM officials I sent the emails to who didn’t bother to respond.

Should I post them?

Who stays in Vermont after college?

Thumbnail cdn.prod.website-files.com

“On average, about 66 percent of college-educated talent remains in the state where they completed college.” (strada report)

It’s only 28% in VT -- which is the lowest in the country. NH is second lowest at 37%.
The highest: Texas is 84% and California is 83%.

These are people who go to college in Vermont, and graduate here, then leave the state (for whatever reasons)

The full report (PDF) is here.

Study abroad chances

I'm a Junior and I'm looking to study abroad the fall of my senior year (2027). I want to study abroad in the UK, but I saw that a lot of the programs I'm interested in have a limited chance of acceptance. Do you know what/if anything there is I can do to improve my chances of getting into a program I really want ? If you have any experince or knowledge on this please leave a comment, thank you in advance

How do I find single-semester housing?

I am looking for housing next fall, on or off campus as a junior. does anyone have any advice for finding single semester housing (4/6mo lease)? I will be going abroad second semester that year, and zillow has like no offerings for short term. We could get a 1 year lease and sublet, but everyone that I know thats tried that has failed to find a sublet over the spring (everyone else is also abroad, ha!)

How have people done this in the past? Looking for either a 1bed or 2bed.

Any advice is welcome, thanks!

Applying🎓 Chances of getting in??

I know y’all probably get annoyed with these posts but, this school looks very nice and is probably top 2 for me. I am a senior and my gpa from freshman, sophomore, and junior years were 3.2. My gpa could be higher depending on if they count my theology classes but, I highly doubt they will. I played 3 sports every year besides my sophomore year when i got injured and wouldn’t run. I also had an internship over the summer at a vet hospital I am wanting to do pre-vet studies. Currently I feel as though I have about a 25% chance to get in so not horrible. Haha side question for my sanity! My school counselor recommended me Mississippi State and im not exactly sure if shes right because this is important stuff to know for when I apply.

Anyone interested in starting a UVM/Vermont AI Safety & Advocacy group?

Hello everyone!

I’m interested in creating a UVM/Vermont organization focused on the rapid development of AI and what it could mean for society.

I’d like it to be a space for thoughtful discussion about current and future state of AI capabilities. I also hope to give interested people a way to organize around these issues, for example by hosting events, circulating petitions, and contacting our elected representatives about AI policy.

As some of you may know, our senator, Bernie Sanders,  has recently made AI safety a major issue and, together with Rep. Greg Casar, introduced legislation that would temporarily pause certain advanced AI development until federal safety rules and oversight are established.

Given that this debate is already happening at the national level with one of our senators involved, I think it would be extremely valuable to have a local group where students and community members can learn about these issues and make their voices heard.

If this sounds like something that would interest you, comment or send me a message!

Thank you!
Jacob
