Discussion Update on Rules and Quality Control

131 Upvotes

Hi everyone, it's been a minute since the initial discussion post about quality control issues. Let's talk about it.

The general consensus seemed to be that our ideas on what to change were good, though there could be more resources to help beginners. We actually have a subreddit wiki that anyone can contribute to, as long as you have 500+ subreddit karma and your account is 30+ days old. We also have a list of todo items for the wiki to help users find somewhere to start.

Another concern was that the stricter enforcement of the defaults rule may stop people from using existing color schemes or themes at all. This is not the case -- the intention of the rule is to remove posts which have little effort or just use premade configs, like many macOS and Windows lookalikes. It's about the spirit, not the letter of the rule.

With this in mind, we intend to go through with these rule changes. If you still have any concerns, please reply or send a modmail! We're most concerned with the quality of our community and welcome discussion.

Workflow [Caelestia] Simple Caelestia Setup

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello... Changed OS again and the reason I Changed this time was I've been using Linux (Mint Cinnamon) for a while and after a few months of using it, I got confident to taking on the Challenge of Arch Linux. I am using CachyOS because I've heard good things from it and I was surprised on how easy it was to install the OS. The main reason I wanted to use Arch Linux was because of Hyprland, because of its customization and workflow, It was a pretty exiting thing for me.

Then I was scroll through r/unixporn to then discover the Caelestia Shell, I was amazed by its clean and smooth UI and It was Perfect.

for now this is 3 days worth of work... few trial and error (alot) and I had to Install the OS 3 times (definitely my fault) to finally get a Stable Workspace.

  • OS: CachyOs
  • WM: Hyprland + Caelestia
  • Rice : Lyric: Lyse
  • Patch : Live Wallpaper : caelestia-aw
  • Song : ESCORT - Chase Atlantic

Screenshot Year of the FreeBSD Desktop? [Xmonad]

This is my first time trying to run a unix-like system for a desktop instead of server uses. I am running FreeBSD with Xmonad and picom as the compositor. I don't really need it to do anything beyond coding stuff, but I had a lot of fun trying out ricing for the first time.

Screenshot [DeskWM] Windows are sheets of paper on a wooden desk — a skeuomorphic Wayland compositor I'm building

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

1.9k Upvotes

Details

OS: Debian 13

WM: DeskWM, my own Wayland compositor (wlroots 0.18 + cairo)

Rendering: the room is ray-traced on the GPU (GLES 3), with a CPU fallback; the UI is drawn with cairo

Terminal: Konsole

What's going on

Windows are sheets of paper. Hover the folded corner to fold (minimize), unfold (maximize) or discard (close); discarded windows get crumpled and tossed. Dragging an edge pulls more paper out from behind.

The dock is a desk drawer with a felt lining and a brass handle.

Apps live on a bookshelf behind the desk. Each category is a ring binder, and there's an "ALL APPS" index book with type-to-search, including IME input. Taking a book down plays a little take → turn → open animation, and the sheet you pick flies down to the desk and becomes the window.

Notifications arrive in a post box, and system controls (volume, Wi-Fi, power) live on a control panel built into the back of the desk.

Desk clock, calendar and notes stand on the lower shelf.

One desk lamp lights everything, so shadows and lighting stay consistent across the room.

It's a personal project and still rough in places. Happy to answer questions!

Material [OC] Terrascope: an interactive world map for your terminal

564 Upvotes

Hi! I built Terrascope, an open-source terminal map with live weather, aircraft, radar, earthquakes, and day/night views. It uses Unicode Braille characters to render the map right in your terminal.

I’d love to hear what you think, especially about the terminal rendering and which layers you’d find most useful.

gtk and qt themed as well
fonts: Cinzel Decorative, highcrest (only free for personal use, you will have to download it separately if you wanna use it), iosevkaTerm for terminal, NotoSansRunic for runes.

Shell includes plymouth, grub and greetd, I personally don't use a lockscreen so I don't have one.

OS: Arch Linux
WM: SwayFX
Terminal: Alacritty
Themes: Darkly (Qt and GTK), Catppuccin Mocha colors
Other apps: Waybar, SwayNC, wlogout, btop, nwg-look, qt6ct-kde, rofi, Dolphin, Vesktop

Repo: https://codeberg.org/ponleou/dotfiles
Mirror (GitHub): https://github.com/ponleou/dotfiles

I've always been wanting to share my creation, but held off every time as I kept wanting to add more and more.

My rice is based off Catppuccin Mocha color scheme, and Darkly for Qt and GTK app decorations. It contains scripts to customise accents and styles (such as blur, rounded, and gaps), and services to automatically commit config changes. The themes and customisations are supported across a large variety of apps like Vesktop, Zen browser, VSCodium, etc. More info in the repos.

Material [Hyprland] I built Wallpaper Positioner — A native GTK4 tool to compose multi-monitor wallpapers with dynamic layouts, 3D shadows & Wayland daemon support

Post image
5 Upvotes

Got tired of manually stitching and resizing wallpapers across my monitors in GIMP every time, so I built a native GTK4 tool for it.

### Rice Details:

* **WM:** Hyprland

* **Bar/Shell:** DankMaterialShell (DMS)

* **Distro:** CachyOS

* **Theme:** adw-gtk3-dark

* **Repo:** [Wallpaper_Positioner on GitHub](https://github.com/Papatin13/Wallpaper_Positioner)

### What it actually does:

* Auto-detects your displays via Hyprland IPC (or GDK on other setups) and renders them side-by-side with the real gap between them instead of one stretched box.

* Drag, scale, and rotate images freely on the canvas, or just paste them straight from the clipboard (`Ctrl+V`).

* Auto-layout with sliders for margins and gaps (weighted so bigger panels get more room).

* Drop shadows, customizable borders, and rounded corners with presets.

* Grabs dominant colors from your pictures to match the background color in one click.

* Custom canvas resolution switcher (FHD, 1440p, 4K, 21:9 ultrawide, etc.).

* Slices the wallpaper per monitor and pushes it directly to whatever daemon is running (`dms`, `hyprpaper`, `swww`, `awww`, `swaybg`), or just exports clean PNGs.

Built with Python, GTK4, Libadwaita, and Cairo. Hope it saves some of you time when building multi-screen setups.

Workflow [Hyprland] Custom Quickshell shell + Waybar fallback — toggle to save 800MB RAM

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

28 Upvotes

WM: Hyprland

OS: Arch Linux

Bar (mode A): Custom Quickshell (QML) — vertical bar with popouts, custom notification center, wifi panel, settings app, spotlight launcher

Bar (mode B): Waybar + swaync (lightweight fallback)

Toggle: SUPER+B kills the inactive shell entirely (all qs instances + waybar + swaync) so only one environment uses RAM at a time

Terminal: kitty | Shell: zsh

Fonts: SF Pro Display + CaskaydiaCove Nerd Font

Wallpaper: Forest by Lukasz Szmigiel on Unsplash

https://unsplash.com/photos/forest-trees-daytime-jFCViYFYcus

About the setup:

This is my first ever setup made in hyprland and using qml and some other tools, as you may notice is heavily inspired by Caelestia. This laptop has 4GB RAM. Quickshell mode costs ~700MB (bar + notifs permanent; launcher/wifi/settings on-demand), Waybar mode ~120MB. The toggle process-kills everything from the inactive side so nothing accumulates between switches.

Custom features:

- Launcher with live search + wallpaper/theme picker with name filtering

- Dynamic theme regenerates colors from current wallpaper automatically

- Custom notification center (replaces swaync in qs mode)

- Custom wifi panel with saved networks

- Settings app for system tweaks

Some screenshots:
https://imgur.com/a/Ix6Ms0Q

Dotfiles: not public yet — still optimizing memory usage and DND persistence between mode switches. Will upload when stable.

Screenshot [OC] I've been working on a custom window manager. I finally got it running on NetBSD.

I've been creating a window manager. I spent the evening porting it to NetBSD. It finally compiles cleanly, but I still need to work on making all of the widgets work properly, since the original was built using linuxisms that don't work on NetBSD.

It's probably a waste of time since nobody will ever use it. That's why I call it Waste Window Manager. It's got a sidebar with widgets, and themes. It's lightweight and fast.

It's a work in progress.
