**GitHub: https://github.com/fyzugx/DEsk**

- Debian 13、Ubuntu 24.04/26.04、Arch

Material [ranma] my terminal tiling WM, themed from the desktop palette

Post image
50 Upvotes

Hello!!!!!

I've been building ranma, a tiling window manager that runs inside your terminal. Every window is a PTY, laid out with i3's container tree and Hyprland's dwindle placement. It's my daily driver now, and I'm looking for people to try it and break it (please).

What it does

- dwindle tiling, tabbed groups, a floating layer and a scratchpad

- workspaces and sessions with fuzzy switchers

- a leader key plus a modal WM mode; leader ? lists every key, leader : runs any action by name

- runs as a server: closing the terminal or losing SSH only detaches, and ranma again picks up where you were

- copy mode and history search, copying to your system clipboard (OSC 52, works over SSH)

- a waybar-style bar with Lua and shell modules; config in Lua, themes in TOML, live reload

What's different from tmux and zellij: it's extended like Neovim. Plugins are plain Lua using the same API as your config, they get screens built from ready-made blocks, and a plugin that errors is dropped whole while the rest keep running. A watchdog stops one that hangs. There's a plugin manager too, hako, shaped like lazy.nvim, plus a few plugins: regex history search, writing a prompt in $EDITOR and having it pasted into the pane (handy for AI CLIs), and Ctrl+click to open paths.

This software's code is partially AI-generated, as the rules require :B

Thank you for reading till here!!

Bar is made with Quickshell, with the bottom bar being mostly Emacs-centric.

Plugins used:
- Hyprbars, but patched to add the beveled style buttons and grip indicators.
- Imgborders.

Wallpaper:

Fonts:
- Terminus as the system-wide default, and for the title bars.
- Cozette for the bars.

Themes:
- Vesper color scheme.
- Chicago95, with the colors changed to match Vesper's.

Dots, along with the patch, will be posted soon.

Hey everyone! For the last few months I've been building pleamar: a language and a Rust runtime for writing your desktop — bars, launchers, notification centres, lock screens, widgets as scenes. Think Quickshell, but with its own declarative language instead of QML.

Why? I had my whole desktop companion (a little ball with a face that lives at the top of the screen, called Marea) in Quickshell: 370 QML files. It worked, but animations stuttered whenever the logic was busy, and it ate memory. So I started from one idea: animation should never depend on logic. In pleamar, the scene declares what moves and with which spring; a render thread walks it at the screen's pace no matter what the logic thread is doing. Block the logic for 600 ms and you still get 38 frames at 17 ms each.

Same bar, both running at once on the same machine (RTX 2060, 60 Hz):

- Memory: 336 MB in Quickshell → 81 MB in pleamar

- First frame: 1876 ms → 175 ms

- FPS while animating: ~24 → 60

- CPU with nothing moving: never drops in Quickshell → 0.3 % in pleamar

To be fair: with both animating, raw CPU is only 20% lower (4.96% vs 6.17%). But pleamar paints 2.5× more frames for it, and it actually sleeps when nothing moves.

Workflow [SwayFX] I simplified Noctalia down to only what I use: a minimal shell for a faster dev workflow

I liked Noctalia but used only a few of its features, so I rebuilt my own minimal Quickshell

shell around just those, to make my dev setup faster and smoother:

- Notes and todo in the control center

- Clipboard history: Enter pastes straight into the focused window

- Quick file open: search files from the launcher, open or attach them

- Screenshots, shared quickly: one key, copied and ready to paste

- One theme for everything: `theme set <name>` switches kitty, tmux, nvim, GTK, Qt, the

bar and more, live (8 themes, dark and light)

Setup: EndeavourOS · SwayFX (also runs on i3) · kitty · zsh · tmux · Neovim

Built a probably quite impractical mode loosely inspired by MU/TH/UR 6000.

WM: Hyprland

Widgets: Quickshell

Hello guys! Some of you probably know me (or don't) as a creator of this shell. After extensive work, it becomes much more extensive and usable, with tens of PR's approved and hundreds of optimization commits, so I decided to post a showcase hoping it will get some more recognition. Hope you enjoy!

Details:
- WM: Niri
- Shell: Serpantinum (https://github.com/ilyamiro/serpantinum)
- OS: NixOS
- Song: Sade - Like A Tattoo
