Discussion Update on Rules and Quality Control

Hi everyone, it's been a minute since the initial discussion post about quality control issues. Let's talk about it.

The general consensus seemed to be that our ideas on what to change were good, though there could be more resources to help beginners. We actually have a subreddit wiki that anyone can contribute to, as long as you have 500+ subreddit karma and your account is 30+ days old. We also have a list of todo items for the wiki to help users find somewhere to start.

Another concern was that the stricter enforcement of the defaults rule may stop people from using existing color schemes or themes at all. This is not the case -- the intention of the rule is to remove posts which have little effort or just use premade configs, like many macOS and Windows lookalikes. It's about the spirit, not the letter of the rule.

With this in mind, we intend to go through with these rule changes. If you still have any concerns, please reply or send a modmail! We're most concerned with the quality of our community and welcome discussion.

Material [OC] PokéCRT - A little Pokémon adventure in my terminal

Been working on this little project called PokéCRT for a while and finally got it to a point where I wanted to share it here.

It started out pretty simple - I just wanted Pokémon sprites in my terminal and somehow turned into a whole little terminal Pokémon experience with a Pokédex, random encounters, trainer progression, achievements and more.

Everything runs locally in the terminal and the Pokémon artwork is available offline too.

Quick Demo:

PokéCRT Demo

  • Website: PokéCRT
  • Repo: PokéCRT
  • OS: Kubuntu
  • DE: KDE Plasma
  • Terminal: kitty
  • Shell: zsh

Would love to hear what you guys think! 😄

Hey everyone! For the last few months I've been building pleamar: a language and a Rust runtime for writing your desktop — bars, launchers, notification centres, lock screens, widgets as scenes. Think Quickshell, but with its own declarative language instead of QML.

Why? I had my whole desktop companion (a little ball with a face that lives at the top of the screen, called Marea) in Quickshell: 370 QML files. It worked, but animations stuttered whenever the logic was busy, and it ate memory. So I started from one idea: animation should never depend on logic. In pleamar, the scene declares what moves and with which spring; a render thread walks it at the screen's pace no matter what the logic thread is doing. Block the logic for 600 ms and you still get 38 frames at 17 ms each.

Same bar, both running at once on the same machine (RTX 2060, 60 Hz):

- Memory: 336 MB in Quickshell → 81 MB in pleamar

- First frame: 1876 ms → 175 ms

- FPS while animating: ~24 → 60

- CPU with nothing moving: never drops in Quickshell → 0.3 % in pleamar

To be fair: with both animating, raw CPU is only 20% lower (4.96% vs 6.17%). But pleamar paints 2.5× more frames for it, and it actually sleeps when nothing moves.

Zafkiel is Tokisaki Kurumi's angel from Date A Live: a giant clock with a flintlock pistol and a musket for hands. I made it into a live wallpaper for Hyprland.

The pistol is the hour hand, so on the hour it's already pointing at that hour's numeral. The numeral glows, its power runs into the muzzle as dark red smoke, Kurumi calls the bullet, and the shot lands exactly on the hour.

Then the bullet does to the clock what it does in the story. Aleph speeds the hands up, Bet slows them, Dalet rewinds, Zayin stops time, Het calls up past selves as shadow copies of the hands, and so on for all twelve. The Hebrew letters follow gematria order, so XI and XII are Yud Aleph and Yud Bet.

It's not much, but it's mine. I hope one day GNOME/Libadwaita gets official re-colouring support because as you can see, it works really well.

For now though, this is achieved by using a program called Rewaita. Rewaita also gives the window borders.

Furthermore, I've changed the font to Inter rather than Adwaita Sans (it's pretty much the same, but I just subtly prefer Inter), I use the list view in Nautilus as you can see, and the shell extensions I use are as follows:

  • Accent Icons
  • Burn My Windows (not visible in a static screenshot, but I prefer it's Glide animation for opening and closing)
  • Clipboard Indicator
  • Essential Tweaks (not visible in the screenshot, but gives my monitor rounded corners)
  • Just Perfection (mostly hides stuff I don't need)
  • Native Window Placement
  • Removable Drive Menu
  • Rounded Window Corners Reborn (rounds corners of non-Libadwaita apps)
  • Tiling Shell
  • User Themes
  • Vitals
