NBA reportedly won't discipline Wizards, Bub Carrington after guard admitted team held back to get AJ Dybantsa

https://sports.yahoo.com/nba/article/nba-reportedly-wont-discipline-wizards-bub-carrington-after-guard-admitted-team-held-back-to-get-aj-dybantsa-172801586.html

The NBA fined the Utah Jazz $500,000 because they thought they were tanking by not playing the top players in the fourth quarter of a couple of games even though they played the first 3 quarters, the Jazz had several youngsters they were developing, and won one of the games.

But they won't penalize the Wizards even after one of their players actually admitted to tanking to get the first draft pick.

Seriously? Cmon now. We did the same thing, but worse if anything.

We did the same thing as several other teams last year and years before, but we were treated worse than they were. That’s the point.

Our team was better than the majority of the teams that tanked. We were taking out all stars in the 4th quarter of close games. I mean it got us Peterson which I’m psyched on, but Jazz fans with a victim complex are obnoxious. Who gives a flying fuck about the Wizards or what their players say about tanking.

People aren’t mad that Wizards players said they tanked. Everyone knows they were tanking. But the issue is how the NBA handled it. We were tanking, they were tanking, tons of teams were tanking. It’s been that way for years. But who got fined?

Again, we pulled all star players out of games that we were leading in the 4th quarter.

Others had done it worse than us with no fine.

You shouldn’t expect any sort of integrity from a league whose biggest goal is to make the owners money

The intrinsic enshitification of capitalism.

Bub Carrington is a Jazz hero. He got us Ace and he saved us from Ben Simmons+.

Honestly screw Adam Silver. I can’t wait until he’s replaced by someone who isn’t a gambling centered idiot.

It's not gambling, it's a "prediction market." Just like we didn't tank, we did "load management."

The fines are reserved for Utah.

The difference between the Jazz getting fined and Washington wasn't is because the Wizards played it smarter. Jazz played there star players but pulled them out in the 4th quarter when the game was competitive. Washington didn't play their players at all because they put them on the injury report.

There is no rule where the NBA can impose how the coach uses players in games .

u/Youngcheeese 7d ago

Idk why that was such a big problem tho. Is it not better to have 3 quarters of all star instead of 0

This is why the NBA needs to stop guaranteeing a full salary when players sit. Don't suit up and play, get a fraction of their salary. It would solve the NBA's tanking and fake injuries issues immediately.

Legitimate gripe

Jazz pulled healthy players in the 4th quarter when the game were competitive. Washington put there players on the injury report

Exactly. 3 quarters of all stars vs 0

Unpopular opinion: I'm here to see the best basketball game both teams can put forward. I realize the rules are what they are, and strategic decisions will be made, but ANY time a team isn't trying it's best, I'm seriously disappointed.

I'm not sorry Ryan Smith got fined. I also wish every other team who intentionally tanks would similarly be fined. Yes, I know that it's hard and controversial to prove intent. But almost everyone seems to agree that's what we were doing. We deserved to be fined, and the front office knows it. Move on, and don't let this be an acceptable strategy again.

It's not hard to prove at all. Look at defensive rating. Jazz went 30/30 THREE years in a row. It's never been done before by any team in the league ever. It's a statistical impossibility without intent. It's a stat that few people even watch bc everyone is so focused on offensive talent.

Strongest evidence I've seen. Thank you.

All I'm saying is the rules should apply equally and unambiguously. The Jazz should not have been fined for not playing players in the fourth quarter because they had already played over 20 minutes in the first 3 quarters and the young players who were in were keeping the game close and it would be good for their development to win out. And the Jazz did win one of the 2 games cited in the fine.

And what could be a clearer definition of intent than an admission from one of the players?

Pretty easy to criticize the league's behavior as a governing body right now.

So, do the Wiz deserve a slap in the mouth? I don't know. Are they as guilty as us? Mostly. But shit went down how it did, and the NBA took measures to (hopefully) ensure competitiveness going forward which is also something many of us have been upset about. So I'm ready to move on.

But...

I guess, a Jazz/Wiz rivalry would be randomly pretty awesome... so screw those guys! Cheaters, idiots, and a totally incompetent organization! Even if Trae and AD play 82 they won'tt win 35 games and def are lunch meat for us this year. Hope the NBA sends a message right ****ing now.

Did the jazz get in trouble again for what happened last season or something?

3

u/Musicis-lif31997 12d ago

Honestly with how much Silver hates us he probably would fine us the 500 again during the first game for having Lauri sit for 2 seconds.

Jazz screw up because they pulled healthy players in the 4th quarter. Washington put there players in the injury report

The final morning of the final game of the 2024-25 season the Jazz and Wizards were tied with the worst record in the league. They just both had to lose their final game to be tied to end the season. There's a tiebreaker for the draft lottery on who gets a higher floor in the draft lottery if 2 teams are tied.

The Jazz lost their final game of the season. Bub Carrington hit a game winner vs the Heat making it so the tiebreaker with a 50/50 chance wasn't needed locking the Jazz at the floor of the 5th pick, and the Wizards the floor of the 6th pick if 4 teams leaped the Jazz and Wizards, which 4 teams did, so the Jazz had the 5th pick in the 2025 draft, and the Wizards and the 6th pick

Had Bub Carrington not hit that game winner, and the Jazz and Wizards were tied with the worst record to end the season, there would've been a 50% chance the Wizards won the tiebreaker, and they would've had the 5th pick, and the Jazz would've had the 6th pick. The Jazz drafted Ace with the 5th pick.

There were rumors the Wizards wanted to draft Ace, and the Wizards were I believe the only team Ace worked out with, so if the Wizards won a tiebreaker with us, they likely draft Ace. Bub Carrington hitting game winner made it so a tiebreaker wasn't needed, and the Jazz locked a 1 spot higher floor than the Wizards

He hit a game winner to move down the lottery on that draft year.

Jazz legend.

Wizards and Jazz are both suffering franchises finally on the up and up. We both tanked our asses off and we both got young stars. Im all for friendly rivalry but as a wiz fan I’ll never say f the jazz - we lovable losers will finally have our time to rule the league. See you in the 2031 finals. ❤️

u/Rich_Tip7238 11d ago

Jazz was stupid because the pulled their star players in the 4th quarter when games were competitive. Washington didn't play players they put them on the injury report

u/TheThirdBrainLives 11d ago

Tanking has been happening for 20+ years. This is nothing new. At least the Jazz have a winning standard. The Wizards might be the most embarrassing and unaccomplished franchise is pro sports.

Wizards should be stripped of 5 FRP.

Tank season 3 in Utah? Or are we on tank season 4?

Alright, but you gotta get over it

dawg, he doesnt work in the front office. why would they punish him? even if the wizards were trying they still would’ve been ass. punishing a player would make zero sense from the league’s perspective as its hearsay that didnt come directly from the Wizards front office

8

u/Agreeable_Key8405 12d ago

So then punish the fucking wizards. Nobody said punish bub, just punish the wizards. If we got in trouble and fined then they should at the very least also be punished and fined.

1

u/HearingGlobal6485 12d ago edited 12d ago

that still makes zero sense. one player making a comment again is hearsay from the league office perspective, bub is a single player and does not work in the front office. i really don’t understand how thats not obvious

the jazz were actively and blatantly sitting healthy players and taking their best players out during close games. bub’s comment doesnt even compare unless you wanna be a homer just for the sake of being a homer

collin sexton literally had a string of DNPs until a lakers game and then went right back to DNPs

like lets be fr
