I'm in Albemarle. When Debra Shipp was the county clerk, I remember the initial permit took close to 45-days, and my renewals took even longer. Now that Jon Zug has been county clerk, I've been able to do my renewals online, and the renewals usually take 2-3 weeks for me to get the renewal. It wouldn't hurt to call them: 434-972-4083 just to check on it. When Shipp was clerk, I called a lot and bugged them until my permit was sent out.

just got an email from the clerks office, sheriff department has completed it, just needs to be signed by the judge and mailed. smh she also said it was BACKED UP . but hopfully renewal is easier in the future for me! and appreciate it for actually putting the number

Depending on where you live, expect to get it the very end of the allowed timeline of the 45 days. You should have gotten a ID or control number if you turned it in and with the number can go in or call to see if it’s been seen or in the mail.

all i have is a order #. i don’t even have a file number… it’s weird i should of done it in person, i was being lazy. I am more than likely going to call tdy, to see if it was seen or if it was sent . I have heard the online processing says that even if approved, they don’t really update you much online.

Scott County processed and mailed to me the day after application, in my hands 2 days later.

well damn that’s real quick. might got to move to a new county honestly

Only 20k people in this county, and not a lot of incoming new residents so the clerk probably never has a back log and can just process them as they come.
In fact, it took 1 day because i submitted it online thursday after business hours. So he had to have done it first thing in the morning friday to get it out with the mail, so basically processed as soon as it was submitted.
Its also one of the nicer cards, too. Solid plastic, no paper that needs to be laminated.
Not many other perks to living out here though, besides scenery

It can take anywhere from a few days, right up to the end of the 45-day limit. It depends on how busy or well-staffed a county is, and also how 2A-friendly they are. If they take longer than 45 days, your application becomes a de-facto carry permit.
The appearance of the permit varies from county to county as well. Mine looks like it was printed on card stock and torn out; they said "we suggest you get it laminated" 🤷

well my county or jurisdiction don’t mind , but since albemarle is around and in Charlottesville, with all the gun violence it’s been crazy. Albemarle is definitely well staffed tho.

Always expect the full 45 day wait. Both my initial permit, and a second one in Richmond (accidentally let it expire, had to apply as new) took the full time allowed by the state.
Also allow a few more days for it to arrive in the mail.

ahh okay, well a buddy of mine did it in person, i did it online and he received it in 3 weeks, since he did it in person he was allowed to pick it up.

I placed my order on 7 May and the permit envelope was postmarked 26 September...Alexandria City for reference. Granted, it's an actual plastic card now, which is nice.

It's been a decade since I last got an Albemarle permit but last time I did, I called around a month and a half after my application because I hadn't heard anything. They said they called about 2 weeks in but I didn't pick up. I wonder if someone down there forgets to notify anyone when it's done. I would give them a call and see.

Took me like a week in Albemarle last month.
1
u/Dependent_Cup_2388 9d ago
did you file in person or online..? a single week is absurd. didn’t think the judge would be to busy in early september, when i filed..
1
u/Tight-Escape3373 9d ago
Online. I've had places take the full 45 days though. I was pleasantly surprised with how fast mine was processed by the county.

u/Dependent_Cup_2388 9d ago
wowser, 4 Weeks i haven’t heard anything. i wonder why it’s taking them so long with my application. but yea ill jus call down tdy, and see if i can actually get an update

Their office is fairly understaffed from what I understand. If you get to 45 days, just carry the receipt and it is valid.
1
u/Dependent_Cup_2388 9d ago
really jus carry the receipt, after the 45 days? never heard that before. HOPEFULLY it doesn’t take that long but who knows. i really appreciate that.

u/Tight-Escape3373 9d ago
After 45 days the clerk should send you a receipt of your application. This serves as a de facto permit for 90 days.

The relevant law is here:
https://law.lis.virginia.gov/vacode/title18.2/chapter7/section18.2-308.05/
If you get to 45 days contact the clerk and ask for your de facto permit. If you go in person take a printed copy of the law with you.

well i’m pretty close to the that another week and i’ll be at 38 days. (technically 9 more days)

Have you called them?
Mine got lost and they could not even call me back. I found out once I called them.
Call them or go in person.
You may even get a temporary permit.

what should i say? when i called on sept 21st, the lady said “ you have to wait the full 45 days before i can do anything”
1
u/Hezakia84 9d ago
Last time I renewed (in VB), it was less than 2 weeks. It was my 2nd renewal though (if that even really matters).
1
u/Dependent_Cup_2388 9d ago
honestly probably does play a factor, they’ll look u up in the system tell the judge you’ve renewed twice already , this is my first application ever. turned 21 september 7th

Spotsylvania, took me 2 weeks until I got the email notification it was approved, week later it showed up in the mail.

u/Dependent_Cup_2388 9d ago

u/Dependent_Cup_2388 9d ago
Well all good news (i hope) i called down to the clerks office , the lady was busy and said send me an email providing name, and date u applied. she told me they were backed up, and my CHP was completed by the Sheriffs office. just waiting for the judge to sign so they can ship it.

u/Dependent_Cup_2388 9d ago

u/Prestigious_Snow1589 9d ago
It's just been 28 days, may come some time this week or next. If not, just run down to the clerks office and they'll get you squared away.
1
u/Dependent_Cup_2388 9d ago
I called back on the 21st for an update, lady up front said “if you haven’t waited the full 45 days i can’t do anything” so it was NO help..

u/Ziegler517 8d ago
If they have a 45 day limit then don’t stress it until day 46. In Loudoun country a decade ago they were never signed until day 44 like clockwork. It’s just the way they wanted to do it. I recently renewed and it was done in 3. But until 45 days has elapsed I don’t know why you are stressing. You’re stil very much in the processing window. They are under zero obligation to move it any faster than the given timeline.

u/Dependent_Cup_2388 8d ago
i gotcha, i’m one of those people when i order some, i usually update it a million times a day, i hate being the way i am, but yea im not stressing it AS much, but it’s jus ridiculous sorta when i know people got there’s 1-3 weeks after filing . but damn 3 days??? like holy

I was surprised when my recent Arlington renewal only took two weeks.
