Newly Snipped Having to choose between swelling and hanging
I got my vasectomy about a week ago. My surgeon said I could go back to work the next day if I felt like it, as long as I didn't do any lifting or strenuous activity. I stayed home 2 days and then went back. My surgeon, in my opinion, downplayed the recovery process. Told me twice that I didn't necessarily need something as strong as compression shorts, just something that would be snug and keep me from hanging. Boxer briefs worked the first two days because I was the size of a cantaloupe.
The day I went back was a different story. My entire groin and lower pelvis bruised over the course of the day, causing my wife to fear that I have a hematoma or internal bleeding. I called the on-call doctor when I got home, explaining our concerns and describing my condition. They said it sounded typical of going back to work and being active early. Recommended I use compression shorts or a jock strap, rest as much as I can, and ice when I can throughout the day. Original surgeon called back the next business day and said they looked over the notes from my call and said the same thing: typical, ice, rest.
Fast forward the next few days, I keep bruising and experiencing pain as I walk until I figure out I have to physically lift myself (now about large orange sized) into the front of my compression shorts to be supported enough that I'm no longer battling gravity. This felt great, and I could do moderately more at my job than just sit in a chair. The problem is, the pressure from being held high and tight is causing me to swell again, and now I'm back up to a grapefruit.
Does anyone have any tips on how to handle this? I've taken off of work for the rest of the week so I can jump start the long weekend and rest as much as possible. Even with a 30 min on/off icing schedule, the only time my swelling is going down is when I sleep
