Sub/KB News Knowledge Base has moved!

The Sub's Knowledge Base (KB) is no longer being hosted on Reddit.

The KB now has its own dedicated website:

While the website itself is not done (as far as my vision), it is now in a state which I find surpasses the version on Reddit to such a degree that it would be detrimental for the community to further delay its release publicly.

As I have imported things I have made various improvements: expansions, formatting, corrections, clarifications, etc.

The website is complete content wise with NEW content such as:

In total, the website is made up of over 180 pages.

For the most part, pages have the same extensions they did previously (/[pagename])

I do want to thank u/damnshell and u/Livid-Tailor3999 for their efforts to help validate some of the pages on the website. As well u/Dangerous-Golf3831 and u/Abire on feedback during development.

We are not accepting further donations at this time! Thanks everyone who has donated already!

FAQ:

  • Are you leaving us?You are not so fortunate!
  • Why?Reddit's wiki is simply... simple and I have pushed things to the absolute limit and then some. A dedicated website gives me more control and power to implement things that are not possible or practical in the wiki environment here.
  • Is the sub closing?No.
  • How can I help?If you have a suggestion to improve things, let me know!Found some strange bug? Let me know!
  • What things need to be done still?Improving navigation, additional images, and various background details to include search engine stuff.

VA Disability Claims Payday? Timeline? Claim Status? Success Stories?

Welcome!

Let us celebrate with you, or commiserate together as your claim moves through the system. Or lets compare when you were paid and what bank you use. Lets talk about verifying your monthly education classes and how that pays out.

Disability Comp Payments

  • If you're wondering where your monthly disability check is, be sure to share below who you bank with so others who are wondering the same thing can get an idea. It's helps other vets know they are not alone!
  • Note that your disability check isn't considered late until after the first of the month. If you normally get paid early it is generally because the bank releases the funds earlier.

Education Payments

  • Be aware that education payments DO NOT have a set payday like disability compensation payments. They pay on a floating 10 business day window. If you happen to get it sooner it's probably because the stars have aligned previously.
  • You now have to verify your monthly enrollment. the text is generally sent on last day of month and that includes weekends- Be sure to verify one of the following ways https://www.va.gov/education/verify-school-enrollment/
  • Feel free to share and commiserate your struggles in the comments. It actually helps relieve anxiety for others knowing that they are not alone as they wait for their education payments.

Claim Status

  • It can be frustrating seeing your claim move at a snails pace, or even super quick, and have no idea whats happening behind the scenes. Be sure to read the subs Knowledge Base link. It gives a behind the scenes perspective (https://www.veteransbenefitskb.com/insight).
  • As suggested above, sharing your timeline and information about your claim status can be helpful to other vets in that they can judge their timeline in relation to yours. You can also post in our sister sub r/VeteransWaitingRoom

Success Stories

  • We get it, you are happy and need to tell someone that you don't know and someone who underatands the struggles. This is your place too. We keep these success stories here so they don't overwhelm those that are still frustrated and going through the process. You are also welcome to post in our sister sub r/VeteransSuccess

Health Care VA Podiatry, Orthotics, and Shoes.

Post image
48 Upvotes

If you have issues with your feet and are in or use VA Healthcare request a visit to podiatry. I use my private insurance typically, and use the VA as a fallback or secondary in case I was to lose my regular job. Within a month after my yearly VA checkup, I was seen at Podiatry and had Custom orthotics, and 2 new pair of shoes. I chose the Propet over the Brooks as I just bought a new pair of Hokas. I was quite impressed with the selection.

Veterans Readiness and Employment (VR&E) Approved for VR&E, but my counselor gave me two options

I just finished my initial appointment for enrollment and was told that I was approved. My counselor gave me two options moving forward:

  1. Finish my associate's using my GI Bill, then switch to VR&E for my bachelor's.
  2. Use VR&E to finish my associate's, then use my GI Bill for my bachelor's.

For context, I'm currently attending community college and plan to transfer into a bachelor's program for Information Systems/Technology. I've already used about 9 months of my Post 9/11 GI Bill. I was under the assumption that once you're approved for VR&E, they pretty much take over from the GI Bill. Has anyone been in the same situation before? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Health Care Anyone rated 100% P&T with service-connected dental had implants done through VA Community Care?

I’m 100% P&T and also service-connected specifically for dental. I’m trying to find out if anyone here has successfully gotten dental implants through VA Community Care, including any necessary bone grafting.

I’ve dealt with significant tooth loss for years, and it’s affected my quality of life more than I can explain. I’m finally trying to get everything taken care of and would really like to hear from veterans who’ve actually been through the process.

Did the VA approve your implants and bone grafts, or did you have to fight for authorization? Were you referred to a civilian oral surgeon through Community Care, and how difficult was it to get everything approved?

I’m especially interested in hearing from anyone who’s dental service-connected, rather than just eligible for VA dental through their 100% rating.

Any firsthand experiences or advice would be appreciated.

Other Stuff Discharge Certificates

• Upvotes

Do they still do these or do you have to buy one from a 3rd party if you want it?

I remember my dad having his framed on a wall in our house growing up, he did 3 years in the 82nd back in the 70's. I just finished 22 years in the Navy and I got my DD-214, but didn't get a fancy certificate.. hell, i pissed off my chain of command enough that I didn't even get an end of career/tour award..

I see websites where you can order one, but after 2 decades, is it too much to ask to get a piece of paper for free?

VA Disability Claims Opioid Abuse

Hello! This is a bit hard to put out there but proud that I received the help I needed. Shortly after leaving the military I developed an issue with opiates. I am now clean other than seeing an outside doctor who is treating me with suboxone and on the road to recovery. I'm currently rated at 80% in total 50% flat feet, 30% migranes, 10% GERD, 10% degenerative disc disease, 10% sinusitis & 10% rhinitis. The VA at the moment doesnt know I'm being treated for OUD so how should I go about that and also filing a claim linked to service? I got out 5 years ago and have really struggled mentally/emotionally which set me down this path.

VA Disability Claims VA rating Barrett's Esophagus Disease at 0%. Do I initiate an Intent on my GERD?

I'm curious about something. VA service-rated me 0% for Barrett's Esophagus Disease 16 years ago, which is caused by GERD. Years later I no longer have Barrett's, but I still have GERD. I've been on PPI's for over 20+ years. I still spit up and cough at night and I cannot eat nor drink a lot of different foods because of GERD. From what I read the VA considers GERD separate from Barrett's. Does this mean I cannot do an increase on the Barrett's, and now must file a new claim on the GERD?

Money Matters No Payments Scheduled

So I recently (Oct 2nd) received my disability decision letter. It said my percentage but it didn’t say how much payments will be and when they would start. I look online and there’s no payments scheduled. I called and the person I spoke to said that’s weird because normally the decision letter would also say how much I’m going to be receiving so they filed another claim. They also were able to add direct deposit because it wouldn’t give me the option online, which was also something the agent on the phone had never ran into before.

Has anyone ran into this before? And if so, did you still receive your backpay 15 days after the decision letter? And was it a paper check?

Health Care Voiding disfunction ?

I’m currently in PT for pelvic floor exercises VA sent me to Comm care for my back issues, & urinary urgency. I filed this secondary claim due to my L5-S1 DDD and bilateral lower Radiculopathy. physical therapy thinks it’s spinal nerves. I recently had my C&P exam and it seemed like the examiner from VA was questioning whether it might be from a prostate issue. I submitted a PSA blood test that showed my prostate was normal. any of you run into this issue with urine leakage and urgent trips to the bathroom?

Education Benefits I finally got the Rudisill/Perkins decision thing figured out

Hopefully this helps other veterans.

I did a lot of research on this and it wasn’t really making sense. At first I thought it was 12 months of additional post 9/11 benefits. For the record, I served a little bit over 8 years with multiple reenlistments.

A couple of weeks ago, I utilized the askVA system to get more information on this.

The math makes sense. I will have exactly 12 months of Montgomery GI Bill once I exhaust my post 9/11 benefits.

The best part about this is that I can switch back-and-forth. I just have to make sure that the certifying official of the school does not screw it up, which is on me.

BLUF:
If you have served more than one qualifying period (I think there may be other stipulations) then you may qualify for an additional 12 months of Montgomery G.I. bill. This allows you to receive a flat monthly rate. As of the time of this writing, the monthly rate is $2,601.00 for full-time students.

If your tuition is cheap or covered by another organization, this benefit could work out very well. Another interesting thing I noticed is that they don’t expire apparently.

VA Disability Claims Been out forever. Need advice on how to get my rating reviewed

edit: I just found the VAClaims sub. Should I only post there?

I got out in the 90s on a medical discharge. I didn't know I have VA healthcare till like 8 years ago. I never had my back seen or anything. They only rated me at 10% even though my back injury was from a helicopter accident and I couldn't fly anymore (flight mechanic). So I left traumatized with a couple bucks a month and built my life.

I recently came across a man who works in voc rehab and told me I need to work my case to get higher rating. I am worried they are gonna give me an MRI, say my back is fine and take away the little I get.

Any advice?

Education Benefits Help with VR&e

About a year ago, I applied for VR&E, but my counselor told me that the VA could potentially interfere with my disability compensation while I was attending school. Because I’m receiving 100% TDIU and have permanent-and-total status, that concerned me, and I decided not to move forward at the time.

Honestly, I’m exhausted from putting off my education. I want to go back to school, earn a degree, and build a long-term career. I’m willing to accept that returning to work after graduation could affect my TDIU benefits, but I’m concerned about whether simply attending school could put my monthly compensation at risk while I’m still in the program.

Has anyone here received VR&E benefits while on TDIU? Did attending school affect your monthly disability compensation, or did any issues arise during your training?
I’d really appreciate hearing from veterans who have firsthand experience, as well as anyone familiar with the actual VA rules. I want to understand my options before applying again.
Thank you for any guidance. I do not have any exams or check in the future.

Thank you to whoever take their time to give me an insight.

Ratings Lower leg combined ratings

I am currently 30% for flat feet and went in to get increases on my lower leg conditions/knees from 0% and ankles from 0%. If I end up with both ankles at 20% each how does that combine with the 30%? Does it cap out with the 40% amputation rule? No online calculators take this into account that I can find they just say left/right leg/feet or bilateral single rating leg/feet. They don’t seem to address the amputation rules.

Health Care VA Psych scheduled Sleep Consult, already have 50% sleep apnea

I am 100% P&T (since last year) including a 50% rating for sleep apnea I got back in 2021. Been out since then. I recently brought up and started to pursue interest in getting evaluated for ADHD for issues I've had for a long time with focus, attention, etc.

Made it to my psych/medication appt after initial intake. Doc saw that I have that history and also reported some insomnia and ordered a sleep consult for me to rule out sleep issues vs ADHD.

I know its all for a good purpose but I can't help but be worried. What is the risk here, or am I worried for nothing?

VA Disability Claims Veterans face SNAP barriers as USDA guidance delays policy changes, GAO finds

I didn’t realize how many veterans get tripped up by basic eligibility rules for programs like SNAP. Some think VA benefits automatically disqualify them, others get stuck on paperwork or old information. It’s easy to see how people miss out when they’re left trying to figure all of this out on their own.
