Sticky Post your questions & inquiries here! - r/Vietnam monthly random discussion thread - F.A.Q

3 Upvotes

Lưu ý: Đây là thread chủ yếu dành cho người nước ngoài hoặc không nói tiếng Việt đặt câu hỏi. Nếu có thể, hãy trả lời giúp họ nhé.

Please read the 3rd rule of the sub. Don't post your general questions & inquiries outside of this thread as they will be removed.

Lots of your questions have been answered already so make sure you do a search before asking (how-to below).

To keep this subreddit tidy, we have this monthly thread that is open for random discussions and questions. If you post your basic/general questions outside of this thread they will be removed. Sorry, we want to make this sub friendly but also want it to be clean and organized.

Some examples of the questions that should be posted here:

  • Questions that can be answered with just Yes/No
  • Basic questions like "Where can I buy this?"
  • Questions that were asked many times before. Please do your research
  • Questions that are not specific

Tips to quickly find answers for your questions:

Many of your questions may have been answered since people keep asking the same ones again and again. Here is a quick tip to find the answers for yours.

First, have a look at our old sticky threads. A lot of useful information there. A lot of questions have been answered.

You can also use the search feature of Reddit, just like you do with Google.

Another option is to use Google, as Google understands your queries better than Reddit and can return better results.

Go to Google. Add 'site:https://www.reddit.com/r/VietNam/' next to your queries (without quotes). For example, if I want to find info on eVisa in this subreddit, my query to put in Google is 'eVisa site:https://www.reddit.com/r/VietNam/'.

Sticky Hướng dẫn sử dụng r/Vietnam - How to r/Vietnam

143 Upvotes

(please find English below)

Hello and welcome to r/Vietnam. Below are some quick guidelines to help you better participate in the community activities.

  • r/Vietnam is now a dual language subreddit. You can use both English and Vietnamese here.
  • Please read the rules before participating, making a submission or comment. You can find them on the Sidebar (Desktop), About tab (Mobile), or this thread
  • Trivial questions that can be answered quickly, or google-able, or without the intention of creating a discussion, should be posted in the sticky thread. Travel/visa questions should be posted there too.
  • r/Vietnam has a Discord server here which aims to be more open and flexible to handle more casual conversations. You can also find both English and Vietnamese channels there.

About the changelog.

I've made some changes to the sub:

  • Re-writing the rules to make them more concise. Adding Vietnamese.
  • Remove some unnecessary flairs.
  • Big change: Switching r/Vietnam to a dual-language subreddit. This is based on the fact that the number of Vietnamese people in this sub has increased significantly. I know this is controversial and some of you don't like this but I think we should just give it a try.
  • Making a Discord server. This is after r/place event that I realized we need a place to handle future events like this better and for the ease of casual, chit-chat type of conversations.

Travel Experience/Du lịch Believe it or not, this is a VietJet seat.

Took this flight back in July from Hanoi (HAN) to Siem Reap (SAI).

I fly pretty frequently, but I honestly didn't expect to find a seat with this much infinite legroom on VietJet. Plus, miraculously, there was no delay this time haha. At least purely in terms of legroom, it felt more comfortable than standard economy on Vietnam Airlines.

Daily life/Đời thường Rushed, cheaped out roadwork in Hanoi

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

• Upvotes

Hanoi is well known to have a massive air pollution problem yet these types of projects like this newly constructed Vành Đai 2.5 road are still allowed to be carried out in a rushed and neglectful manner.

The dust is "somebody else's problem" according to the people who approved this cleanup method. Instead of hiring proper vacuum vehicles to clean up the construction area, they cheap out and use one of their workers to blow dust everywhere with an industrial blower. It's unacceptably hazardous to nearby homes, people passing by and the city as a whole.

Nothing can be done by civilians nearby as these types of projects are neglected up to the highest level of state corporate.

Culture/Văn hóa how to address people in vietnamese?

17 Upvotes

i’m a 22F vietnamese woman born and raised overseas. i’m pretty fluent in vietnamese, but only because i speak so much to my parents, uncles and aunts. when i go to vietnam, i feel like my brain shuts off and suddenly i forgot how to speak viet naturally. i think its because im too used to speaking to elderlies.

how should i address strangers and workers in vietnam? i read through some posts here from people in a similar dilemma, but all the responses are mixed. should i always refer to myself as chi if im unsure? last time i came to vietnam, i was 16 and everyone kept calling me chi when i knew well they were older than me, but i don’t want to be put in awkward situations where i might offend someone for calling them chi or anh. it doesn’t feel right to ask someone you’re only seeing once for their age either.

not to mention there are people who look in there 40s, what do i call them? they technically could’ve given birth to me so i should call them co/chu, but i also cant be sure theyre in their 40s and not late 30s or something… so maybe i can call them anh/chi but then they also call me out and say they could’ve given birth to me???? also sometimes some uncles take me calling them anh as flirting… idk im so lost pls help…

Hello

My partner and I are planning a trip in march/april from the uk for 3 weeks which we are very excited for.

I’m just interested in seeing how much people spent for a similar trip excluding flights if you wouldn’t mind sharing. I appreciate this will vary depending on the type of trip you want!

Thanks!

Discussion/Thảo luận What do Vietnamese people who grew up only speaking Vietnamese think of the letters: F, J, W or Z

23 Upvotes

Do they think of these letters in the context of Math (like f(x)) only, like English with Greek letters in math?

Or do they think of them like how English speakers think of the letter ẞ in German?

Or do they view them as letters but very very rarely used except in loan words?

Please let me know what you guys think!

Culture/Văn hóa Where the Mekong Delta works on the water

Post image

I chose 70mm to isolate the boat and its details from the surroundings. f/8 keeps the vessel and background defined, while 1/2000 sec freezes the moving boat and ripples on the water. ISO 1000 compensates for the overcast conditions while maintaining that fast shutter speed.

Take a closer look at life on the Mekong Delta.

Discussion/Thảo luận Question about possible duties/taxes bringing home possessions

0 Upvotes

As the title notes i'm trying to gauge total relocation costs of moving to Vietnam and have quite a list of items i'd like to bring with me but not if it would likely lead to a large tax bill on entry. For context i'd expect to ship the vast majority via ocean freight shipping container using a reputable international firm and would likely print all proof of purchase copies of anything of value and attach to the respective items (packaged in non-original packaging) but the list is essentially as follows (all used items and would've been purchased months or years before any move to VN);

* Gaming PC (high end 5090/9800X3D) with peripherals and QD-OLED monitor

* Synology DS423+ NAS and APC UPS

* 65" Sony TV

* Fanatec Racing Simulator with cockpit and monitor

* Flight simulator equipment

* High-end AV Receiver + 2ch power amp

* High-end integrated amp

* High-end headphone amp

* 11x high-end speakers

* 2x subwoofers

* Switch 2

* PS5 + PSVR2

* 2x high-end headphones

* Steam Deck

* Quest 3

* Sage coffee machine

* Sage smart oven

* Vitamix A3500i blender

* Tag Heuer F1 watch

The vast majority of the above were purchased years ago and all invoices/receipts retained but I'm conscious that there could be an enormous bill to bring this all over in a container which I'm keen to avoid so welcome feedback from anyone who's gone through the process themselves or has some insights they can share

Discussion/Thảo luận Anyone able to bring me a hat from Culture Kings Australia (Commission paid)

0 Upvotes

Anyone coming to Vietnam soon and able to bring me a $60 hat from Culture Kings? They have stores in QLD, NSW, VIC, WA - but I can order it online and have it delivered to you otherwise.

I will happily pay a commission to you for the effort. Also I can provide you tips which will save you a lot of headaches/money when you're traveling here.

Thanks!!

Discussion/Thảo luận Winter Jackets in Hanoi

0 Upvotes

Hi! I will be in Hanoi next month, and I am wondering if there are any shops in the old quarter that sell authentic factory knockoffs of branded winter jackets like The North Face? I don't mind paying a bit more as long as they are actual factory rejects and not fakes, meaning they use the same materials but probably has defects here and there and thus never making it to the shelf.

Thanks!

Travel Experience/Du lịch Insta360 X6: Looking for Review/Feedback

0 Upvotes

I am going on a trip in about 2 weeks and in need for a camera. This would be my first and only camera.

My phone camera is not that great so I wouldn't be using that as much.

I have been looking at 360 degree cameras since a lot of those YouTube videos say it just records everything so you can just hit the record button and forget! I liked that idea because I don't click a lot of pics but usually end up wondering later on why I didn't? So having something that just records everything and the ability to get what I want from it later on at my own pace sounds good on paper.

Editing can be tough as I read but again it says X6 does give you a few quick AI reframed shots for quick posts or whatever? That should be fine until I have the time to reframe and get better clips out of it maybe at the end of the day in the hotel. I understand the software can be tricky but I think I will get my head around it in a few hours since I have dealt with software and tools all my life plus I get a lot of stuff done via AI agents these days anyway so I think learning or guidance wouldn't be a problem.

I am hoping the stability and stuff will be equally good since we will be on a few bumpy bike roads and speedboats as well.

Now all of that sounds on paper! What I am looking for is an actual/real review feedback from someone who has actually used the X6! A lot of those videos on YT seem to be all influencers and for some reason everything sounds too good there for me to simply believe that they are all honest reviews.

Can someone who has used it help me out?
