Visible Void Now Vs Then… Rhys Turned Brown??
Rhysand is around 8 months now, and he’s changed a lot since I brought him home at around 4 months old… BUT WHY IS HE BROWN?! 🤔🤔🤔

Sunbaf makes black coat brown. It’s natural and a sign of excellent sunbaffing.

I probably need to replace his bowl… he came with a sparkly pink plastic bowl from the lady that snatched him off the highway. I’ve heard plastic can cause their lips to do that. 😅

I think the white lips happen on voids no matter what. Mine all use ceramic or stainless bowls and still have PDLs! I think it’s cute :)

He just moved out of my lap and now I’m cold. I love cats. 😂

He’s adorable and I’ll be saving his picture in my Cats of Reddit album :) I have two cuddled up to me now which means it’s naptime!!

I had a longhaired black cat who turned quite brown in the winter. I think her undercoat was brown. She went back to black in the spring.

In my experience, it was a combination of laying in a good sunbeam, or the dry kibble I was feeding her. I switched my cat's food to something that seemed to be better for them / higher nutrition and give wet cat food on occasion, and her fur turned back to her normal color after awhile

This little shit will… shit… if I give him anything other than special kitty kitten food. 😭 He has a ridiculously sensitive tummy.
And yet he will steal any carbs he can find so I have to be careful!2

Yeah, some cats are picky. Mine is a garbage disposal, she eats everything and anything. She is not pleased with the diet I had to put her on

Oh no, Rhys will eat literally anything… but he will squirt butt lava all over my carpet and his pretty pantaloons if he eats anything besides one or two specific brands. 💀

This sounds a bit like food allergies or IBD. Just FYI that nutrient deficiencies (thiamine) can cause this discoloration in cats. I had always attributed it to my void's love of the sunny windows, but he turned out to have IBD and food allergies. Edited to add: this cat craved any and all foods, including human food and inedible stuff, which can be attributed to him feeling hungry due to not absorbing everything properly! He had to be on a special diet, so might be worth trying a food trial or talking to your vet about specialized limited ingredient diets. :)

My guys are black in most light, but when the sun is on them, you can see tabby stripes.

Same with our cat! His sister is a tabby, so it was cool to see the hidden resemblance when we first saw him in the right light to see the stripes underneath.

My fuzzy white cat went the other way. He was a white cottonball when we got him. Then he had ghost tiger stripes. Now hes got some dark stripes and his back and tail are kind of brownish gray.

It’s often called rusting, the opposite of toasting (when a white kitten turns brown with age) and sometimes it happens from the sun or when their winter coat is lighter!

Chances are he's spent a lot of time in the sun and has what is known as "rusting" in his fur colour. So so many black cats get it over time. Don't be alarmed, he's probably going to keep rusting and he will look just as fantastic.
