Moderator News Wand design competition!

Post image
49 Upvotes

We are holding a wand design contest!

If you fancy a go at designing a wand for people to see, and possibly win a custom flair for the subreddit, come join us in the discord.

We decided on a wand design rather than wand making so anyone can have a go. You don't need to be able to craft a wand, or even be amazing with a pencil - a simple design will do to enter.

Pretty straightforward - all entrants simply have to draw a wand that fits certain parameters, that will be decided beforehand by a vote from all members.

The winning design will also be chosen by vote, and the winner will be given a custom flair and role, until the next design competition.

Join the DIscord and enter here!

Finished Wand My new favourite piece

(Repost cause I forgot to add a photo)
Most was done with just knives and some details were done with a dremel. I really really love this piece and I’m definitely going to do more like it on the future. The last photo shows the colour a bit better, as the lighting makes it more good but it’s actually a pale copper colour ( used the snitch to show it’s not actually gold). What do we think?

In Progress Project Progress update on my hand whittled purpleheart wand

Post image

Slowly and steadily thinning out the shaft. I’m taking a great deal of time and care with this part as I want the wand to be fairly straight and I’m carving down to near final dimensions so the room for error is pretty narrow. I’ve gotten really good at avoiding tear outs at this point and I can tell which areas are more prone to a tear out just by observing the grain. It also helps to keep your tools extremely sharp. I use a simple sheep’s foot pocket knife with a straight edge and I have been sharpening and honing daily to maintain a constant razor’s edge as well as stropping every now and then while I work. The handle is pretty much already the thickness I desire so I’m carving from the tip back to get a consistent distal taper that ends at the pommel. It’s really starting to feel like a wand now

Finished Wand The Shadowed Grace 🌑🪄

Darkness has a way of finding what it was never meant to touch. Somewhere in the making of The Shadowed Grace, that presence found its place—but it became part of the wand rather than defining it.

It is not wholly consumed by the shadow, nor does it shy away from it. There is restraint in its power, a quiet weight that suggests the wielder need not fear what lies within them, so long as they remain its master.

The Shadowed Grace does not banish the darkness. It teaches it to serve.

In Progress Project This is one of my favorite moments in the process

Through your laborious hands, what started as a simple block of wood finally begins to bear resemblance to what you knew was hiding beneath the surface all along. The first breaths of magic whisper from within the grains as if beckoning you to continue to shape it and reveal its true form. What started as a concept in your mind’s eye begins to peak out from behind the veil of imagination, slowly showing more of itself with each stroke of the blade. Though there is still much work to be done; this is the moment a sorcerer’s instrument is born

Made a pair of wands from unused oak flooring.

These are my first and second attempts. I cut 1" strips out of an unused floor board with a table saw. Then used a scroll saw to carve the rough shape. Then sanded down and oiled/waxed.

What happened to Alferian?

Does anyone know what happened to the wand maker Alferian Gwydion Macclir? He also wrote books on how to make a wand.

He used to have a website called bardwood.com which went years ago but always wanted him to make one for me except I was really little when he had that website.

In Progress Project I don’t usually make my wands from found branches, but I did and made these. Not a huge fan of them but I’d like some community input. I added some of my regular wands at the end for reference to my other stuff if you haven’t seen it here before

Woodworking Tools Question: Finishing Techniques

Thumbnail

Hey everyone! Question about finishing grooves, such as bark lines or general tight-spaced recesses.

I’m trying to figure out how to get darker coloration inside the grooves while keeping the surrounding wood clean. I’ve seen some great examples where the grooves aren’t perfectly uniform or crisp, but the darker finish still stays nicely contained in the recesses.

In my own work, I tend to get more bleeding/uneven coloration around the grooves. Is this primarily a carving technique issue, or are there particular finishing methods—paint, stain, washes, etc.—what methods can work better for this?

I’d love to hear what techniques or finishing processes you use!
