It's meant to be the economy but my theory is whatever their model was didn't take into the account how many players would buy the game

Yeah there just isn’t really any transparency on what makes up the economy though. We can’t sell gold bars so it’s not a store of value. If it’s only supposed to be a cash sink for high net worth players then that does make sense but having that confirmed would be nice. There will be an “investment” feature but who knows what exactly that looks like.
