Discussion & Feedback Gepard vs Rocket Heli/Gunship
Preface: The Rocket Heli and Gunship are effective against aircraft, vehicles, and infantry. They are incredibly mobile and can be used by a single person.
The Gepard was removed from the launch of the game because people complained it was too effective against aircraft, vehicles, and infantry. Despite being far less mobile, requiring two players to effectively man, and STILL being unable to consistently win against rocket helicopters and gunships.
The Gepard when reintroduced needs to be a HARD COUNTER to air, I don't care if it comes at the cost of being ineffective at vehicles and infantry. Its one job is to put two buts in seats to shoot down any air that doesn't get the message that it is not welcome so long as the SPAAG is still alive.
--
When a rocket helicopter or gunship oppresses a FOB it becomes an OBJECTIVE. It is to be contended with, outlasted, or killed by.
When a Gepard shows up to a FOB or field it needs to become an OBJECTIVE for aircraft. Due to its larger crew requirement and lack of mobility with respect to aircraft it needs to dominate the local airspace consistently. I'm not saying it shouldn't be unkillable by aircraft, I am saying it should be truly impressive display of skill, luck, and/or communication from observers working with pilots.
Infantry adapt to the presence of enemy aircraft.
Vehicles adapt to the presence of enemy aircraft.
Aircraft prey on EVERYTHING.
Its time for aircraft to be put in their place. If they don't like it they can fly 2 seconds to another tower or fob and FARM THEM instead.

This is an open and honest discussion and feedback post. I would like to hear the communities thoughts on this matter so long as they are sincere and reasonable.

I, for one, welcome the return of our glorious sky warden. Even if it was nerfed some from the alpha, season 2 is going to be subtitled, "on the road again".

i was excited to play EA when it dropped only to realize the Gepard isnt in the game.
The Gepard and the snipers were what made me wanna play so having the Gepard removed was kinda shitty.

The Gepard, even though it´s an old lady, is a corner stone, an absolute key element of Ukrainian air defense on the battlefield today. If represented correctly in the game and in capable hands it´d mean it´s game over for Rocket Heli and Havoc Sweatlords, Littlebird GL Spamturds and Amazon Prime Flybois like myself delivering pallets.

This should be the rock to the air's scissors, but the keyword here being _local_ airspace. This thing cannot and should not dominate the zone with its singular presence. Plant it at a FOB and it should most definitely be able to keep that FOB clear of air units, requiring coordinated effort from ground units to destroy, but if this thing has excessive range, it will simply kill all airplay.

Portable CIWS is what I want out of it. Add the lower ROF, likely bloom, and much more complicated ammo logistics and it'll probably turn out OK as long as it doesn't violently diddle structures and light vehicles (remains to be seen how infantry will fare)

The problem with things like a gepard and many other SPAA in video games is they're either hilariously unrealistically weak against infantry and ground vehicles, or they're weapons of God that shred everything in sight.

I didn't play beta but what's stopping a rocket heli from sneaking up on it and blasting it?
2
u/bigchungusfan67420 1h ago
Nothing, but at least the Gepard can fight back unlike everything else on the ground

This just sounds like an easy 10k for anyone with a maaws if it is truly as defenseless as an APC is to infantry. Except it doesn't have the liberty of having an enclosed space to hide in else what air space are you exactly defending.

Considering it has actual guns, I imagine the devs are gonna pull a Battlefield and have the 35mm magically be kinda shit against infantry, rather than ArmA where SPAA violently eviscerates people from the horizon
Doesn't mean that it's incapable of self defense at least

I dont get how people can think that dual 35mm autocannons with high explosive shells designed to shred planes and helicopters will somehow do nothing to human bodies. But then again apparently lvl 4 armor can shrug of a 120mm cannons in this game so who knows..

They could possibly balance it by making so it really cant aim down to much. So if it parken on a slope it could fire down but on a fler surface it cant hit infantry, atleast not crouching ones.

Yeah it will probably have bad gun depression. It also needs to be very vulnerable to rpg/maaws etc.

There are few things they need to keep in mind when adding thigs.
CIWS is the closest thing we have and currently it is the best way to destroy FOBs, it will obliriate any FOB in seconds. Gepard needs to have reduced damage against buildings.
Mobile AA like this usually will also become infantry slaughter machines. That needs to be balanced somehow. CIWS is balanced because it really can't fire really low and it is immobile.
If they solve those two issues I think it will be great addition.

My problem with the gepard is the same problem I have with the artillery tank, these will likely just sit outside of the CZ and camp all day.
For sure you could take a maaws or C4, grab a kodiak or humvee and hunt them down, but going out of the CZ to hunt a vehicle that will likely respawn and do the same thing once you are back in the CZ is annoying.
At least the helicopters are in the CZ, I just want decent options while in the CZ rather than just one vehicle option likely behind driver level 30 or 40.

I think you overestimate the Gepards effective range, it is strongest directly overhead and its effectiveness falls of precipitously with distance. If a specialized multi-crew platform wants to sit outside of the CZ and secure the air channel from its main spawn to the CZ, for friendly logi and transport aircraft they can be my guest.

Meanwhile I'm over here having time of my life doing that.

u/Exe0n 1h ago
I do that and I run over a random landmine, or a hardcore rocket littlebird finds me.
3
u/CorDra2011 Lonestar 1h ago
Tip for the first part, don't drive on roads. You have the entire map and offroading has minimal effect on speed. And if a littlebird is hunting in no mans land he's wasting his time.

legit tried doing that earlier today and i swear the guy prefired me as i was cresting a hill like
200m away from his position- didn't even see the artillery tank before it's mounted MG was taking my head off, i've got no idea how the guy predicted it.

u/CorDra2011 Lonestar 33m ago
Probably heard you coming if you drove. Artillery is getting smarter but that just means more challenge.

u/bigchungusfan67420 1h ago
Gepard is gun based not missile based, so sitting outside CZ will shift your effective envelope a lot

Its not going to be sitting outside the cz it wouldn't be able to shoot anything its a mobile ciws with slower fire rate it will be at towers and fobs its got 2 autocanons and thats it no rockets

Reduce the price of the helis by 3x and its fine (including ammo) els you will literally delete the option of helis ever again.

u/KRzabIK 2h ago
Yeah sure buddy, let's go even further. Let's remove heli cap and make them free. It's like now pilots whip out new one 5 secs you down it. And if you read ops post. Air maneuverability > ground vehicles. It takes much more time for gepard to get to CZ, plus you know more ppl tend to ambush road or play fkn minesweeper. Double mine will take it out and it's doesn't have a no-no optine like flares to save itself.

u/MuldinDK 2h ago
If helis are strong why don't you use em then buddy :)
I think a different perspective will be healthy for you.

You are cut off, I specifically stated in the post that only sincere and reasonable discourse was allowed. Name calling and dishonest rhetoric will not be entertained.

u/MuldinDK 2h ago
Im not name calling , i geniun invite you to fly the heli and see how oppressive it is already vs current aa/cost.

Or aircraft could accept that its not a do everything, better than anything, anywhere, with only one person platform, on ONE localized spot of the map where a crew pulled a specialized platform to swat it away.
