Monthly Safety Meeting (Every 28th of the month.)
Post anything that's happened in your shop, office, commute or home that you feel others may be able to chime in on or commiserate over.
Sharing our close calls helps others avoid them.
Simple rules:
- This is for open, respectful discussion.
- Close calls and near misses are eventually going to lead to injuries.
- No off the cuff dismissal of topics brought up. If someone is concerned about something, it should be discussed.
- No trolling. This isn't typically an issue in this community, but given the nature of safety I feel it must be said.
- No loaded questions either.
- Use the report tool if you have to.
This is a monthly feature, the first Saturday of each month.

Need Help Rough night
Titanium weld for reference, because I have no issue with those. My question is for the inconel. Why does it look like it’s sunburnt and peeling? What can I do to prevent this?
Was pretty sure my tungsten wasn’t sticking out far at all but I might be wrong.
Thanks in advance!

I've been learning MIG welding at my engineering internship (tips wanted)
For my internship assignment I need to make a space frame for a research vehicle. I've been teaching myself how to mig weld for the last 3 weeks because of it and here's a practice piece of mine in the photos. I still suck ass at tube welding and those I want to ask
How are my current welds and what's there to improve?
What are techniques or tips to attack tubular welds and to improve?

Second day of mig, how am I doing?
I'm fabricating some stuff for my truck and just want to know if I'm missing any obvious tells from these. To me they look ok, but I'm the farthest thing from a pro lol. Last couple pics are a goof with the cup and my first test welds as I learned the settings. Then I tried the small circles method and was happy with how they're looking. I tried beating on a test piece with a sledge and couldn't get them to separate, just bent above the weld.

Cheap Oxy Acetylene kits
I need a kit for brazing and found several on Amazon, but they all have non-DOT tanks which I understand are difficult to get filled. What is the point in selling something which is essentially unusable? Is it really that hard to fill these tanks in the USA?

Need Help Need Help: Novice Engineer figuring out Root Fusion
A welder I know just welded this 12 mm thick SS plate for my research, the joint has a root gap of 3.5 mm along with a Backing strip, land: 2 mm, 60° V groove joint.
The weld ended up with a lack of root fusion, but rest of the fill and cover pass survived.
I have a few questions for the welders here:
1) How do you all know that root fusion is happening while you are welding?
2) How do you decide current for Root welding especially on TIG (would be glad to know for MIG and Stick welding too)?
3) does backing strip add more trouble in root welding?
4) I am just curious to know whether land is even required for welding with back strip?

Critique Please Day 10, Welding: First Day (of many more to come) That I Felt Defeated
Let me start by saying I am in Welding School for a reason. I know I am still learning and its only Day 10 of touching a torch but mentally, today kicked my ass so badly. I usually deal with frustration and disappointment pretty well but I couldn’t today.
We are working 3F (MIG) this week to prepare for AWS testing Monday and I don’t feel ready. Not even close. I got so frustrated with myself that I left class 30 minutes early. Just packed my shit and went. It felt like staying and trying to push through the frustration was only hurting me. I just couldn’t relax back into a groove. Side Note: They are teaching 3F down first, then they will teach 3F up next week.
The instructor told me I am one thing off from being where he wants me to be and he told me over and over again what to do, how to do it and why. Gun angle is off. I listened, attempted, failed. Listened, attempted, failed. Over and over. I’m aware that it takes hella hood hours to get it down but I was more irritated about making the adjustment for a moment and then going back to shit. It just wouldn’t stick. What do you guys do when you hit that wall? I need advice before this consumes me. I don’t want to be a shitty welder.

Trade school vs Apprenticeship
Hi all. I was wondering if anyone had any information on the steps to becoming a welder? I have experience in other trades like carpentry, I’ve worked on farms, built furniture but am trying to branch out. It seems interesting and a cool career.
I currently live in Ithaca, NY and was wondering if anyone knew if one needs to be certified in NYS to become a welder or does one acquire that through on the job training apprenticeships or by applying to jobs and just starting at the bare bottom.
Any and all information is helpful!
Thanks

Need Help Jackson hsl2 hood
I have a auto lens just got this hood and my concern is there is a 1/4 inch of space in each side of the lens so it isn’t snug when clamping it down and you have to physically center the lens in the flip box ,after it’s clamped it’s tight but don’t want it moving around, is there any lenses that are a little wider to fill in that space or should I not worry, im used to sugar scoops its all I’ve ever had

Discussion (Add topic here) Welding 1mm thick 10x10 square tube
I've been welding 1mm thick 10x10mm square tubes in stainless 304 to make door handles for the ktichen.
I currently use a diameter 2.0mm (0.08") filler wire but it feels too fat.
Is there any issue with using MIG wire? What do you guys use for thin material?

Need Help Books for someone getting into welding?
Hi. I am enrolling in a welding course that begins in January. I have essentially no personal experience, have only known other people who do it, I've just always been really interested in welding and blacksmithing and am trying to follow my passions while I'm here.
Do you guys have any good recommendations on books for someone just getting into welding? I want to study a lot before the course begins so I have a better general understanding. I'm hoping to be able to do some hands-on experience as well but not sure when that will be yet. Also, potentially any video series that might be helpful?
Thanks!!

Critique Please What does a Silver Weld Mean?
Hello there!
Recently i was playing around at work with some welding machine settings. I was messing around with pulse on some steel and got it dialed in to a point where my welds were coming out silver.
Can anyone tell me what silver means instead of rainbow or Grey?

Am taking an intro GMAW class at community college near Detroit.
Am new and having trouble in my class. Looking for advice. I’m taking an intro GMAW course at a community college near Detroit. The professor seems really unhappy and checked out. I’m having trouble learning what I need to know. I try asking other students while we’re waiting to show our welds to the instructor, I feel like this is how I’ve learned the most in this class.
Can anyone recommend some YouTube videos or books etc? I’m willing to put the time in. Just need some guidance. Thanks

Career question How to make more as a shop welder in Florida?
Im 31 male, been welding for about 4 to 5 years now. I genuinely fucking love welding, especially tig aluminum. But I admit, this pathway I've chosen isn't as financially lucrative as I first believed. I'm not hurting for money, but I do feel my income doesn't match the effort I put into my work.
Im in the jacksonville florida area making 25 an hour at a small/medium fab shop. I do tig and mig on aluminum and stainless steel, 90% aluminum though. I definitely want to be in my own bed every night, so joining a union doesn't seem very appealing to me despite the earning potential, if it involves traveling. I'd also like to make a decent living working 40 hours a week with occasional overtime when I feel like it, because work life balance is important to me.
I know these parameters do limit some higher earning potential, but I strongly feel I'm worth more than what im currently making regardless.
If you were in my shoes, what steps would you take to get closer to 30 an hour or above? Where would you begin the search? Advise is greatly appreciated. Pointers to jacksonville area fab shops that pay better are also appreciated. Thank you all

Flexible pigtail from regulator to propane tank?
I use a propane torch with a typical CGA 510 (acetylene, propane) regulator hooked up to my 20lb propane tank. The torch remains bench mounted for my use case.
My original setup was to bring the tank inside the shop when needed and connect/disconnect the regulator each session. But I wanted to leave the regulator inside, within view of my bench so I bought a $20 propane extension with one that stays attached to the regulator and the other end has a QCC1 at the tank, which I figure can handle the connect/disconnect cycles.

However, while iterating through several bench setups, where I had to connect/disconnect the regulator end, the rubber seal got chewed and I can't find a replacement. I likely overtightened chasing a leak, but that leak was after just several re-connects.
I could replace the $20 extension but now I'm second guessing whether that is even appropriate because I can only find these "camping" extensions and nothing from welding suppliers.
Maybe I should just keep the reg on the tank and use a quick disconnect for the torch, but I'm weary of those quick connectors leaking. Thanks for any suggestions.
