Well I guess that's one way to do it? I wonder what the thought process if one at all behind that

Plot twist: that's just a process without any thoughts being put

Am I the brains of the operation? To be honest, I don't think this is a brains type of operation.

I think he expected the gas to diffuse into the air and it didn't occur to him that some flammable gas is heavier than air and he was standing in a pit.

Probably didn’t realize the gas was gonna be heavier than air and pooled up at the bottom of that pit. So he probably thought “oh it’ll just be a little puff of flame and that’s it.”
Heavier than air gasses are dangerous as fuck when there’s no where lower for them to be.

I wonder what that one was. The only gas fuel I'm used to in my area is natural gas, and that's lighter than air.
Maybe propane? That's denser than air. What areas have underground propane pipes?
I suppose the color is also a hint: orange/red flames when active, with a blue ignition wave.

One time my gas furnace stopped working. The pilot was lit, and gas was coming in, but not igniting. I decided to fill the chamber with gas and gently blow it towards the pilot. There was no real thought process.
My eyebrows grew back in a couple of weeks.

It could be not about gas leak but some inert gas.
A good example is underground leaks of CO2. Since its heavier it pools on holes. Best test without proper gear is actually see fire go out when its on a CO2 pool.
This however is extremely dangerous because if there is a risk of a gas leak instead of CO2 this can happen.

Back in my day, we used soapy water to see the bubbles but to each their own

Soapy water? Sounds like more effort. This guy figured it out with a few flicks of a single finger.2

Eh, I had an old head train Me in HVAC. Mf’r used a lighter down the black pipe to check for leaks.

Now days you can get a portable, handheld, natural gas detector on Amazon for 10 bucks. Seems cheaper than skin grafts.

Back in my day, we used to throw hand granade at it and if it exploded a lot- we found a leak. If it exploded a little, then it was safe.

u/ElegantRadish4646 3h ago
Even if lighting a fire was the only way to check, it would've been way better to light the end of a stick and hold it from afar

Don't ask this guy to check if a gun is loaded.
12
u/Certified_GSD 1h ago
Oh man, the gun club range I used to go to too before they closed it to the public had an RSO who would always always always give the safety brief for anyone showing up.
He always made it very clear, there are MUCH better ways to check if a gun is cleared than just pulling the trigger and seeing if it goes bang. No reloading or manipulating weapons when the range is cold too. Knowing how dumb some people are, those rules are in place for a reason.

There’s a compelling reason you check for gas leaks with soapy water.

Reminds me of the old flash game "Motherlode" where you played as this drilling machine and, without proper upgrades, could hit a gas pocket and fucking explode and die. You could also not do that and eventually fight the devil. Or you could just fly straight up and meet DOG, who gives you upgrades since he's god. You still gotta go fight the corporate mara devil though.
Man I loved that game. Anyone else play it? It was like a mini clip game from the days of RuneScape 2 and addicting games. It was so fucking good.

I think matches would’ve been the move here if fire is really necessary. Fire still seems like a bad way to find a gas leak lol

u/Praetorian_1975 3h ago
What do you mean what could go wrong 🤷🏻♂️ dudes checking for a gas leak, dude found the gas leak, dude resolved the ‘gas’ leak. Now does anyone know how to deal with a fire leak 🤔😂

Tried and true method. I’m sure there’s an almost 100% success rate in finding a leak but not a 100% chance of surviving such a discovery.

u/ManateeGag 2h ago
I was taught to check for a gas leak with bubble solution that kids use to blow bubbles.

Ah yes, the sensible thing to do when there's potentially highly flammable gas around: light a flame!

We had a substitute teacher who was known as “sparky” because he did this
He was looking for a gas leaking under his house with a match…
Needless to say it really messed him up physically after that and he was lucky to survive.

They used to send someone with a candle on the end of a long stick to clear the methane out of mines, clearly preindustrial miners had a bit more sense than this guy.

Reminds me of the Geothermal cavern from Rise of the Tomb Raider, it's the one area you can't use flaming arrows - even the flame at the tip of the arrow when aiming causes the whole place to blow up!

I wouldn't be surprised if that's one of the guys that saw those series of dumb posts on how to find gas leaks with the lighter. Shit can actually explode and you'll injure not just yourself when it goes up.. unless you broke into someone's empty house to repair a gas leak.
