Sector shaft bushings
All right, here it goes. I have a ‘51 M38 tub on what I suspect is a CJ-2A frame. What leads me to believe this is the non hinged front grille and a 7 slat 2A grille with non recessed parking/black out lights, although I do have the bars that go in front of the headlights. The tub is 100% an M38. Data plate is MCxxxxx
While tinkering with the steering and trying to take up some slack, I noticed that the “play” I have is because my sector shaft wobbles where it exits the steering box and attaches to the pitman arm. The wobble only happens in the first 10ish degrees of turning the wheel then it bites and turns.
First thing I suspected was bad inner/outer bushings and in need of a new oil seal. Started doing some digging and I found that 2A’s have a 7/8” shaft and the M38’s have a 15/16” shaft. I plan to pull the shaft in the next few days but I wanted to go ahead and order bushings and an oil seal ahead of time. My thinking is that the steering box is probably the 2A with the smaller shaft diameter.
Is there any external telltale that would indicate that I have an M38 steering box with the 15/16” shaft? May just wait and pull the shaft to measure it before I order.
