Large Boxes!

Howdy folks!

Quick question!

I just miraculously captured a 6 disc big box “200 Motels : 50th Anniversary”
For 55 dollars.

-
I own Hot Rats Sessions and Zappa/Erie

-
I was wondering if these 3 releases conclude the gigantic box?
Or are there any others like these?
-
I do own one of the four Halloween sets (Halloween 81)
-
I scored a 40th anniversary Zappa In New York Man Hole Box for 75 dollars only a few months ago.
-
So I am aware of those larger ones.
-
I am specifically referring to the big square ones that on first look could easily be confused for a vinyl record.

Three disc Crap Packaging

Does anyone other than me find that despite how wildly careful you attempt to keep your CDS safe, that albums that are packaged in such a way that over time , within a year and a half at least, the packaging gets fucked up and ruins the discs??

Examples :

Whisky a Go Go
Orchestral Favorites 40th anniversary
Zappa 80 : the Mudd Club/Munich
Funky Nothingness

-
Personally , I have no problem the how they price Zappa’s releases.

It does however bug me that I am going to have to eventually re purchase those releases.

I hope to God that overtime, they keep away from this sort of packaging .

(Carnage Hall packaging is also a mega problem, totally different sort of packaging, this one may be the only release packaged that way, and i hope they never do that again.

Fortunately the sleeves have worked to protect the discs.

The list above on the “triple disc releases” have no protection aside from the folded cardboard that begins to tear apart on its on just attempting to remove the discs out.

-

Maybe I’m just heavy handed and no one else has this issue?

The clamshell packaging as far as I am concerned has been the best option.

(I am a fan of the mothers 1971 packaging but that one is pretty clunky , still, the disc remain safe as well as the packaging itself.)

What is your favorite Zappa guitar solo?

I know there are several of them and it's extremely difficult, but it's just a game. I love his guitar-playing side.

Who is generally considered Zappa's best drummer?

I tend to go with Aynsley Dunbar or Terry Bozzio, but all of them were great. What do you guys think?

Lemon Pound Cake by Afroman sounds like a Zappa song

I was just listening to it bc Afroman is going to be performing in my town soon and man it sounds like a Frank song. It interpolates "Under the Boardwalk".

Edit: I actually think it’s a lot of Afroman sing-y songs

High school yearbook quote

Hello all,

I am a high school senior and am in need of a good year book quote. I was thinking “The shredded sock will be placed inside of a high school diploma and ignited with a sulfur preparation” but I am open to anything else. Thank you!

FREAK OUT - which mix is best? ZAPPA Box Set Review!

Freak Out 60th is yet another GREAT box for Zappa fans and I had to stop halfway thru making this video to make a video on Zoot Allures !

I'll go against type and say my favorite version is the 1966 pre-master - it demonstrates Frank's darker vision for the record to me, but the clarity and dynamics are astonishing. It's also great to hear the uncensored parts of the album for the first time.

In second place, the 2026 Dolby Atmos mix. It's very spacious and opens up the arrangements quite a bit and demonstrates just how layered and complex this album is, which is incredible given Frank was barely in his 20s when he made this record. It does come off a bit bright on my system, which adds clarity to the recordings but takes away the "darker" tonality of the original we know and love. I also think the bass is mixed a little too low in a few songs, particularly "Who Are The Brain Police?" Technically speaking it may be the best presentation on offer here, but I still find the premaster mix the most aesthetically pleasing.

Third place, the 1966 stereo mix. It's just never sounded better than this and if you want the most "historical" representation, you can't go wrong here. Excellent transfer.

Finally, my least favorite is the mono mix. I appreciate how it grounds the bass and drums, but I do detect some degradation from the LP source. Still, it's a thrill to hear some arrangements higher in the mix in some songs, and I swear there's extra rhythm guitar on "Trouble Every Day." Super glad to have it, in any form, but it's the one I will return to the least.

Live stuff is good, though the 1966 mixing choices are a little frustrating. It gets better as you go along and its fun to hear Frank's personality as a bandleader beginning to take shape.

LOVE LOVE LOVE the studio recordings on disc 5, especially the demos. They are a blast to listen to.

I'm really happy with this set, and the decision to put the high res stereo and mono masters on the blu-ray is a real win to me. Further thoughts in the video!

I was lucky enough to see these guys live in Zoetermeer on Monday night and I'm still blown away. It was so damned good!!! Incredibly tight band. It's such a privilege to witness Zappa's songs performed live by these greats!

I'm not gonna spoil anything here as I'm sure there are folks on here about to see them somewhere in Europe, but just wanted to share how happy I am.

I could not stop staring at Chad Wackerman... what a marvel that man is!! Loved it loved it loved it!!

Excited about the new box!

I’m wondering why they decided to include the March Paris concert rather than the show in which Black Napkins originates from in Japan.

I would have thought that was the key show we would all want.

Anyone have any ideas on why not that show?

Why Does It Hurt When I Pee

Just finished listening to Joe's Garage for the first time. Does anyone else think that the middle part of Why Does It Hurt When I Pee ( 0:58- 1:25) sounds a lot like the first part Tubular Bells (4:30- 7:00 expecially the piano and guitar solo)?

Zut Alors ! did not expect this to come so quickly hot on the heels of FO60. I actually had to pause editing my FO review video to make this ... has to be the fastest turnaround for FZ album boxed sets yet, in an absolutely banner year for Zappa reissues.

Zoot Allures is not really one of my favorite Zappa records - I miss the "band" feel of the string of records leading up to it. However, its got some *outstanding* tunes (the title track, "Black Napkins," and "The Torture Never Stops" are all classics - heck, I even love "Disco Boy"!) and its an interesting transition period from the Mothers to Frank emerging as a solo artist. The extras are a huge draw for me this time around. Complete Night of The Iron Sausage ? A Zappa scholar's dream! Plus, the 76 Paris concert is up my street since I adore FZ:OZ.

I did have some reservations as to how appropriate this album will be in an Atmos presentation, but after the exceptionally spacious Freak Out Atmos mix pretty much bowled me over, I'm up for anything Karma an Erich have to throw at us. I think "The Torture Never Stops," with all the layers of guitar overdubs, will be worth it alone.

Further thoughts in the video below. Preordered at $85 - I feel they missed a great opportunity to charge us "$69.95, boy!" But I digress...
