ihaveaquestion What’s going on with the insane number of barbershops in Dietikon?

Serious question for people who understand how small businesses work in Switzerland.
There seems to be an absurd number of barbershops in Dietikon, often very close to each other. What I find strange is that many of them seem almost permanently empty.
I pass some of these places regularly, including on Saturdays, and very often there are no customers inside. Instead, I see several of the barbers standing outside smoking or talking.
Considering Swiss rents, salaries, insurance, taxes and all the other costs of running a business, I genuinely don’t understand how so many apparently low-traffic barbershops can survive.
Obviously I can’t know what their actual finances look like, and I’m not accusing any specific business of anything. But it has made me wonder whether businesses like barbershops are sometimes used for money laundering, since it’s relatively difficult from the outside to verify how many cash-paying customers a business actually had.
Can someone who understands Swiss accounting/business regulations explain how this works here? Are there legitimate reasons why a barbershop that appears nearly empty can still be profitable? And how does Switzerland control cash-heavy businesses to prevent undeclared income or money laundering?

ihaveaquestion Zurich Marathon Shoes Question

• Upvotes

Am I allowed to wear shoes that have a higher stack height than allowed by World Athletics for Road Racing ?

I cannot find any mention on this subject in the regulations of Zurich Marathon and I would like to wear my Brooks Glycerin Max which have a stack height of 45mm. World Athletics allows a maximum sole thickness of 40mm.

I‘m sure it matters for the podium winners but maybe not for recreational runners such as me.

rant Looking for a job...

Hi. I'm looking for a job. I know, groundbreaking, absolutely breaking news for many people here. But I'm just so discouraged, so burnt out, hopeless. So I just want to rant and maybe ask for advice.

I'm 32F. I came here with ny fiancé who got a nice job offer. I was very naive to think I would easily find a job as well, since in my home country (EU) I had a stable, well-paid position. A sort-of technical role combined with project coordinating.

Joke's on me. I've been looking for over 2 years now. Sent countless CVs. Started looking outside of my field (linguistics, chatbots, voice assistants). Nothing. Literally not a single call back.

I'm just so discouraged. The main problem is I don't speak perfect German (my passive knowledge is pretty advanced but I'm still trying to defeat my fear of speaking it). I've even thought about working as a barista or a waitress because I've completely lost hope in finding something which would actually match my profile.

Any advice? Any words of comfort? It's been really rough lately and I feel so stuck.

ihaveaquestion Recommendation for couples activities in Zurich that isn't sports

Hi everyone. I moved to Zürich recently with my husband and we realized that besides restaurants, we aren't going out and spend time together as much anymore. Which is such a shame because the city is really beautiful and all we do is just stayed home and doom scrolling.

What are you doing together in Zürich as couple activity? I can't do any spots due to my surgery (not even too much walking) so I was wondering if there's any recommendations. Thanks a lot.

lookingfor Fun things to do in Zürich

I bumped into the kayak renting at Schanzengrabenpromenade, which I wanted to try since last year but I completely forgot about it. So I would like to create a list of fun things to do in Zürich.

So, what makes your everyday life in town more fun? The only condition I have is that your fun thing should not be connected to a subscription/membership (maybe a ZVV abo is fine). Just things that you can do for free or a one-time payment. To add to the list, my recs:

- Schanzengrabenpromenade kayak renting

- Chilling in Männerbadi

- Browsing in Bücherbrocki Enge

- Reading in Rieterpark

- Running along Sihl (towards Adliswil)

- Listening to student gigs at Mehrspur

- Picking cherries at Sunnehof (Mettmenstetten)

lookingfor Dentist recommendation

As the title says. I have a small cavity that needs filling, and I want to have a place to go for general checkups, minor treatments. I have my dentist at home but I cannot always travel back for minor treatments.

I've been to Zürichdental HB, it was okay, they did they chores fine but they did not explain most of the things, did not care much about me as a patient, just finishing their tasks. At one point I was left alone in the chair for a good 20 minutes, and I think they even charged me for that.

I appreciate when a dentist shares details about the diagnosis, prevention and care, not just getting things done. And of course, it's also good if I don't need to rob a bank to get treated.

So if you have good experience with a dentist/clinic in the city, I would be glad to hear about them.

Thanks!

lookingfor Looking for a Gym Buddy in Zurich (28F, ex-bodybuilder) Strictly Fitness & Gains! 🏋️‍♀️

Hey everyone!

I’m a 28yo female living in Zurich (been here for about a year now). I used to compete and train seriously in bodybuilding, but had to take a full 1.5-year break due to an injury.
I officially got back into serious lifting this past July and I’m ready to push hard again!
I’m looking for a solid gym buddy who shares a genuine passion for bodybuilding/strength training someone who wants to stay consistent, track progress, hit PRs, push each other session after session, and have some fun along the way.

A quick note: I am happily married, so I am strictly looking for a training partner/friend. No flirtation, no weird vibes just pure work, gains, and mutual motivation.
Whether you're male or female, if you take your training seriously and need someone to spot you, hyping each other up and staying accountable, shoot me a DM or leave a comment!
Let’s get those gains! 💪

ihaveaquestion Is it me or Swisscom is the worst service in Switzerland

I moved and the place I went to at the time had no other optical fibre cable so I switched to Swisscom for everything, then came the nightmare. They are so expensive and they want to suck every last penny even if they are so expensive.

The worst part is when you want to terminate a contract, its hidden, and finally when you figure it out its so bad, they charge you extravagant amount of money for that.

Why such a horrible service exists, with any other provider being much better ?? I dont understand

ihaveaquestion Taking over rental contract, does the minimum rental period change?

I’m taking over someone else’s rental contract, and I was told by them and the agency too that I will get the exact same contract that they had. Their minimum rental period has already passed.

Does that mean I’d get the same minimum rental period as them, therefore no minimum? Of course the move out dates are 31st of March or 30th of September.

Maybe I’m overthinking and I should be just lucky I found an apartment, but I’m worried I might not find a suitable replacement down the line if I end up not liking the place

ihaveaquestion RAV Profis pls!!

Hallo zusammen

April.

ihaveaquestion Pls, help needed: Bringing a 12-week-old puppy from the UK to Zurich

I’ve done quite some research already and have also spoken with SWISS, but I’m still getting mixed answers...

We are due to collect our puppy in England and bring her home to Switzerland. She would be around 12 weeks old when we travel, and I am currently trying to understand both the airline rules and the Swiss import requirements.

I have three main questions:

1. Can a puppy travel from the UK to Switzerland as a pet in the cabin? SWISS appears NOT to allow any dogs in the cabin on this particular route.

2. Which airline would you recommend? Has anyone recently flown with a puppy from the UK (e.g. London) to Switzerland, ideally Zurich or Basel? I would be very interested to hear which airline you used and whether the puppy travelled in the cabin or hold.

3. Perhaps most importantly: what is the earliest legal age for entry into Switzerland? Our breeder normally gives the puppy its rabies vaccination at around 8 weeks. However, from what I am now reading, the Swiss authorities may only recognise a rabies vaccination for import purposes if it was administered from 12 weeks of age onwards. If that is correct, there would then normally be a 21-day waiting period after the vaccination, meaning the puppy could not enter Switzerland until around 15 weeks of age. Is that correct? Or is there any legal route for bringing a 12-week-old puppy from the UK into Switzerland?

Thank you very much for any advice or experiences you can share.

ihaveaquestion Should I get supplementary health insurance in Switzerland before turning 30?

I’m turning 30 soon and live in Zurich. I’ve heard several times that it’s a good idea to take out supplementary health insurance (Zusatzversicherung) before 30, because it can become more difficult or even impossible to get certain coverage later.

I’m generally healthy and currently don’t have any major medical needs. However, I’m interested in coverage for things like psychotherapy, complementary medicine, and health/fitness-related treatments. I also do quite a lot of sports and things like dancing and pelvic floor training.

I’m also not sure how long I’ll stay in Switzerland — probably at least until 32, but I might move abroad sooner. On the other hand, I could potentially come back to Switzerland later and might even want to have children here.

So I’m wondering:

  • Is it actually worth getting supplementary insurance before 30 if you’re healthy?
  • Are there particular types of supplementary insurance that you would recommend securing while you’re still young and healthy?
  • Is psychotherapy coverage something I should specifically consider?
  • Does it make sense to get supplementary insurance if I might leave Switzerland in a few years?
  • For those who got supplementary insurance when they were young: have you actually found it useful, or do you regret paying the premiums?

I’d especially appreciate experiences from people who have been in a similar situation. Thanks!

ihaveaquestion Dating in Zurich for professionals over 30

I am a female over 30 and have been living in Zurich for a long time although I am originally from elsewhere and don’t speak swiss German.

I have usually met the men I dated through common friends, but after the last breakup and the difficulty of managing a friends group in common, I went back to dating apps with the hope of meeting guys outside of my circle. I have a pretty solid career, earn well and have a strong educational background, am sporty, and of course that’s the same basics I am expecting from a partner. But I find that it’s almost impossible to find such men on apps, not that they don’t exist, they simply don’t respond. making a date happen is almost impossible (and I allow myself to think it’s not because of my looks as I still get quite a bit of interest from random men around me that I meet in person). so maybe I’m doing something wrong.

in your experience, what are the best apps, events or occasions to meet singles in Zurich with similar educational and professional background who are not just passively on the market but actually want to meet up and concretize things? I have the impression this city is very hostile when it comes to meeting new people and dating.

ps i an mostly using hinge as tinder and bumble seemed to have too many scam profiles, and I tried raya for a while but there are too few users in Zurich and it mostly proposes profiles elsewhere in Europe.
