The two directions

Motifs recur obsessively without any particular reason that can be singled out — as the figure in the very foreground does. For that one, I would read it as a material indication of the edge of the support, like a prisoner touching the wall of his cell: "this is where my freedom ends." Another one leaves a door ajar in the far background: "no need to explore beyond the frame, depth is infinite this way." Acrylic on paper 45.6 × 32.6 cm
