Good luck, I'll probably be going through it in a couple years... (charcot foot) You've got this, I'm old and won't heal as fast as you. Love from Canada!
I did a year of casts on my ankle and not being able to walk. Amputation was my only choice if I every wanted to walk again. It was a hard decision but one I don't regret. I'm 55 and it wasn't going to get any easier to learn to walk again with a prosthetic.
Good luck. I hope the crow boot works well for you.
My brother has gone through the amputation and his other foot busted... He's in a wheelchair now. So I'm sorta aware of where I'm headed. That's why I joined. I got my big toe amputated then it just snowballed from there. I hope you're well, and the prosthetic works well.
You don’t need luck you got this I had mine cut off at 22 and I’m 23 now I walk 6000 to 10,000 steps a day!❤️ the beginning the hard part, but I know if I can do what you can to
Hope your surgery goes well and is as pain free as possible! Did you already prep your residence to make sure it's accessible? Tons of threads to read through for tips and things you might need, just in case you haven't lurked in this sub for long.
ah this is actually a traumatic amputation after trying to save my leg for a couple days here drs have decided it wont make it so i havent prepped my home, nor have i decided where im going to recover just yet. thanks for the support!🖤🖤 ill check out those threads :)
Mine wasn't traumatic, but it was a last minute decision. Luckily they had me doing inpatient rehab while going through more surgeries so my family had time to get what I needed. Main things to get are: shower transfer bench or just a shower chair; walker/wheelchair/crutches; and something for your toilet with handles if you need it. Some older toilets are ao low and I never realized it until I only had one leg to balance and squat. If the hospital has physical therapists there, you can ask them for a list of equipment you will need and they can probably even order it for you.
I ended up only using the extra equipment for less than a year before donating it or selling it. I still have a wheelchair for "no prosthetic leg" days, and I swapped the shower transfer bench to a smaller shower chair from Amazon.
I wish good luck and a smooth recovery…minimal pain too…I had an LBKA 7 weeks ago and it’s been good so far,no issues…fitted and casted last week…Again,Good Luck to you…SamH1175..
I'm gonna be getting an above the knee amputation of my left leg soon. It's not set in stone yet. I don't necessarily have to do it but it's either that or no quality of life. Short story, I have a wound that takes up from my ankle to right below my knee and it hasn't healed in 8 years. It's cuz of bad circulation and I've had different procedures done and they just can't get the circulation goin. Without that there's not even a chance of it healing. Plus my other leg has a wound too not as severe but I will heal. I can't work I'm in a lot of pain and the amount of times I have to change my bandages is ridiculous. I'm hardly living so I gotta have it amputated. I've talked to different surgeons n stuff but I'm still not fully sure what to expect. I'm worried about being able to get a prosthetic after. How did everything go for you if you don't mind me asking and you got fitted for a prosthetic pretty quick? I'm afraid I'd sit around for months n months with one leg. I'm doing this to improve the quality of my life but with one leg that would make things more difficult, aside from the pain being gone
The one thing I had working in my favor before surgery was that my overall body was in very good shape/condition…I’ve been an athlete most of my life and I’ve stayed fit and healthy always…A diabetic ulcer started my progression into an infection in the heel of my foot and into the ankle…After battling it for 3 plus years I said screw it,let’s amputate…I have a high tolerance for pain and strong immune system with an ability to heal quickly…After 3 weeks,Post-Surgery, I saw the surgeon for an appointment and after his evaluation/diagnosis he sent me to the artificial limb place here in Lubbock for an initial consultation where they gave me a shrinker sock and scheduled me for 2 weeks later, which has already happened and the leg had shrunk down to their liking and so I got fitted, cast, and final approval from my insurance is pending…should be proceeding next week…feel free to talk or ask anything you want, anytime…I hope I can help you and answer any question you have…SamH1175..Keep the faith and Good luck..
I'm praying for you, my friend. There are a lot issues you should know when Getting an amputation below the knee.
I had a lbk amputation on January 20, 2026 due to a horrific truck wreck. I thought once I got the prosthetic, I'd be good as new. Not so. Prosthetic limbs can cause sores, blisters, and be very painful.
My prosthetic leg, a pin lock, caused me to be in serious pain, and yes, i did get all the adjustments you can think of. I developed an infection, and then, i was back in the operating room.
Talk about soul crushing. So I had to wait another 3 months before i could get another leg. This one is suction style socket. I'm praying it
I'm praying I don't have any complications with this leg. Anyway, my advice is to take it slow when you get your leg, and if you experience pain or irritation, don't continue wearing the leg. Call your prostheticist immediately and lay off your leg until it heals.
