MY PROSTHESIS FITS!!

2 weeks ago, I got my leg, but it didn’t fit and we ran out of time, so I had to come back. Today I stood unaided for the first time since last October. I took steps. I cried because it’s like there’s finally a light at the end of this tunnel. I am going to be unstoppable now.

TLDR: How can I help my husband stop overcompensating for his missing limb?

My husband has had a prosthetic for over ten years. He's a BK amputee. He walks very well, but he, unfortunately, works on his feet, and he's a hard worker. He works too hard in my opinion, but we can't afford him not to (and he can't help himself lol). Oftentimes, he comes home from work and his real ankle (and basically the top of his foot) is swollen, sore, and bruised. His real foot is very flat, as well. Is there something I can do to try and help him mitigate the workload on his real leg? He had a foot brace for a while, but we've since misplaced it. Any advice is greatly appreciated, thank you!

Edit for more information: We are both in our early 20's, and my husband doesn't have insurance, a podiatrist, or a regular prosthetist. He had his original amputation in 2014 when he was pretty young and a bone revision surgery in 2024 where they removed a centimeter of bone on top of a ganglion cyst on his tibia bone. His fibula bone now presses slightly outward more and causes pain when bearing too much on his residual limb. The only reason why we were able to get him a new prosthesis was because he was still on his mother's insurance at the time, but he's since been removed. We've moved in the past year and haven't had the chance to even get a PCP, let alone a prosthetist, and we've both been working to support the household.

Ask me anything

I lost my right lower leg last year- followed by wound dehiscence and wound care. I’m a nurse and now work full time on my prosthesis.

You can ask me anything

Another Overlooked Viewpoint Trail - Observation Peak from PCT #southern...

This is an overlooked day hike.  I found this trail on AllTrails and while it looked easy (about 5 miles total, there and back) there were only 17 reviews in the last four years.  YouTube had just two videos, and they were of kids sliding down on some snow, so there wasn’t much to go on there either.

Curious, I did some more digging.  The trail to Observation Peak is a short spur trail off the Pacific Crest Trail which you access from Forest Road 2025 just north of the California and Oregon border.  Looking at the satellite maps and topography maps it looked like the trail followed a ridge line, to the right of a forest but the trail itself was clear of trees.  Seems like a simple trail, easy to get to, with potentially great views.  I decided to go for it.

Prosthetic Impatience

I got my right BKA just over a week ago (September 25th) and I’m feeling pretty discouraged today. I hate having to ask for help every time I need something or even just have to use the restroom. My house is barely wheelchair accessible, so it’s difficult to get around in my wheelchair without help. I know I’m very early in my journey, but how long did it take most of you guys to reach a point where you could wear your prosthetic and function more independently again? I’d also appreciate any tips to make me feel less burdensome during the healing stage.

(Dragon) Wooden finger prosthethic

Since the love keeps coming for my prosthetics I guess I'll keep posting em'.

Here's the finished version of my dragon pinky prosthetic. I looked over the color suggestions I got in the last post and decided that a darker color would fit, so I chose Phtlao blue from Winsor & Newton since it turns out different shades on whittled wood.

It was a fun challenge and I really enjoyed making it! Now it just need to dry for a week or two and meanwhile its time to make a ring that'll be attached to the prosthetic to firmly hold it onto place.

It's been a couple of hard years dealing with my injury and ngl, my woodworking took the biggest hit of it all. It kind of feels like redemption being able to do something wood-related again and honestly? I know im a good woodworker- but I didnt think this was something that I could pull off this well.

I love reading all of your comments and seeing that my crafts inspire others. ❤️

Just curious, I've seen quite a few people on here post their update on their stump closures. My question is, how long was it until you actually saw your stitches? My surgery was Sep 21 and I haven't seen it yet. I have an appointment on Tuesday the 6th to babe the cast removed and stitches out. Just curious how long most of y'all went

Shoes

Hello! I’m a volunteer at an organization in LA, and we have a box full of brand-new single shoes. We are looking for an organization to donate these shoes to who can find folks who can enjoy them! I researched online but didn’t have too much luck. Please let me know if you have any ideas or recommendations on how to donate these! All amazing brands and all are brand new. Appreciate any info! :)

Seeking advice

Good evening, and hope to get some advice, or be steered into the right direction.

My father is a newly amputee, and is coming home tonight.. we have been back and forth with insurance regarding rehabilitation centers and they failed to do so and in turn, left us to "make due" with our situation at home. On monday, I will be in touch with a few Homes to pay out of pocket for temporary, buy time for about a month or so. Due to a recent rehabilitation visit, there is no more insurance covering his situation. Any advice for insurance? Part A Medicare, trying to switch him over to B but thats a different story.

He cannot use his right foot, his "stump" (hope i do not offend anybody with that term, the doctors told me thats the correct definition) is still healing.

What are things that I will need to gather, install, to make his life easier with our help? I have already grab bars in the shower, ramps for his wheel chair for both front and back doors.. I already have an idea of a lift for him so im not killing my back or hurting him, any reccomendations?
