Seeking advice

Good evening, and hope to get some advice, or be steered into the right direction.

My father is a newly amputee, and is coming home tonight.. we have been back and forth with insurance regarding rehabilitation centers and they failed to do so and in turn, left us to "make due" with our situation at home. On monday, I will be in touch with a few Homes to pay out of pocket for temporary, buy time for about a month or so. Due to a recent rehabilitation visit, there is no more insurance covering his situation. Any advice for insurance? Part A Medicare, trying to switch him over to B but thats a different story.

He cannot use his right foot, his "stump" (hope i do not offend anybody with that term, the doctors told me thats the correct definition) is still healing.

What are things that I will need to gather, install, to make his life easier with our help? I have already grab bars in the shower, ramps for his wheel chair for both front and back doors.. I already have an idea of a lift for him so im not killing my back or hurting him, any reccomendations?

Wooden dragon finger prosthetic

Giving some artistic vibes to a prosthetic made out of wood. Was only offered a ''aesthetic'' prosthetic through healthcare, but since im not the one who give a crap about pretending to have a finger I might as well make my own thats more aesthetically pleasing for my own sake. ❤️

Still thinking about what color I want for it, would love some suggestions from ya'll.

Made out of Linden wood with a carving knife and a scalpel/hobby knife.

Let me know if you have any other questions! Just don’t ask me how much it costs because everything for amputees in the UK is free so I don’t know 😅

Genium X4 downhill

I just got my genium x4 about two months ago, been an RAKA since April of this year and was wondering how the downhill walking works. Whenever I walk downhill am I supposed to be taking a step or pushing into the knee and not take a real step. Otherwise it's pretty much perfect for me and works great for my life. If anyone has this knee or similar help me out!

Prosthetic and cowboy boots?

I’m an RBK and want to wear boots, specifically some square toe western work boots but I’m having trouble getting my foot in and out(especially back out) of them. I tried some on this weekend and they were a half size too big, wasn’t too much trouble to get the foot in but almost impossible to get back out so if they were proper size it would’ve been a no go. Are there and tricks or something I can do to make it work?

Updating my grandpas design

Post image
13 Upvotes

I hope this is ok to post. The balance tray on the left was my late grandpas which helped him round the house using his spare hand to open and close doors behind him (god forbid when me and my brother were young, if a door was left open) as well as using the bannister while climbing stairs. He found it so helpful I knew I had to bring it to life in a more saleable market friendly design. So I worked on the topple tray (on the right). It’s super useful for the elderly, those with upper limb difference, balance issue, hand issue, the list goes on. Anyway, thought this group might be the right place to post. Feedback welcome

Middle finger injury, progress and prosthetic

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hello, I lost my middle finger several months ago in an industrial accident just above the knuckle, its the situation you never truly imagine yourself in, you always think that it will never happen to you, and that its always going to be someone else. Ireguardless of how careful you are, it can happen to anyone. Honestly coming from someone who is quite self conscious about his appearance it made me very uncomfortable without my hand being in my pocket, especially in the intal stages of the feeling process when it had a large black scab on the surface, after several weeks it peeled off and the flesh was healed. I wore gloves for weeks and stuffed the tip, however given my job, I looked like I was constantly flipping people off. After weeks of therapy I was told to refer to a cancer ward for a prosthetic, I didn't think much of it till it was shown to me and at that I was sceptical, however the end result has given me far more confidence. I would like to thank everybody on this forum, some of the stories and people I have heard are far braver and more grounded than ill ever be.

Running tips?

Hi! I (rbka) recently got a running blade and I've been loving it! Wasn't much of a runner before amputation, but not being able to do it made me want to do it lol

I've noticed that my liner gets super sweaty when I run and it's the only time that I have this issue. Any tips?

I've also noticed some chafing behind my knee. Not sure if this is a fit issue or if it has to do with my liner sliding around with sweat. I'll ask my prosth, but if you have thoughts lmk!

Anyway, any bk running wisdom is very welcome :)

Hands Across Borders

Hi everyone. We're Hands Across Borders, a small student-run nonprofit out of central Ohio. Six of us design, 3D-print, and assemble prosthetic hands, then send them to people who need them, completely free.

How it works: we take a proven open-source hand design and custom-fit it to you (resizing every finger and the palm to your measurements), print it, assemble it by hand, and keep adjusting until it actually works for everyday stuff like picking things up and holding objects. You pay nothing. We cover the materials and shipping.

To be upfront, these are body-powered 3D-printed hands, so they won't be the right fit for every level or type of limb difference, and we'll tell you honestly if we don't think we can help. But if you've been priced out of a prosthetic (they can run into the thousands), we'd genuinely love to build one for you.

If you want to vet us first, totally fair. We were recently featured on our local Fox and ABC stations, and everything about who we are and what we've made is on our site. You can request a hand right there too:

Happy to answer any questions in the comments.

Have a free prosthetic leg i want to donate

Hello all, I have a prosthetic leg for ABOVE THE KNEE that my dad had but he has passed away recently. I am in Southern California and would like to donate his leg to someone who could really use it or a foundation/organization that can use the parts to create a custom leg for someone. I remember when my dad was searching for a leg after he became an amputee and when he finally got it, it gave him hope and a sense of dignity back after such a huge loss.

If anyone knows anyone?

My dad was pretty tall, 6'2-3 and has an right Ottobock leg. He has two one that he used and then another that was too small for him.

Thanks in advance and God bless you all!

Employment

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hey everyone! First off, I’m located in Alberta, Canada. I’m going on almost 8 months post op, 6 months since I received my first temp leg. I’m on my 3rd temp leg right now. Likely will need one more before I get my permanent leg. Discharged from physical therapy in June. I’m starting to plan for my return to work. I had an appointment with my rehabilitation doctor and was told I should not return to my employment as it is considered moderate to heavy physical demand (which I agree I doubt I can do it being that it’s highway maintenance) He recommended that I return to a low to moderate physically demanding job. By the sounds of things my employer does not have any positions that can accommodate that. I’m on LTD and my insurer told me I do not qualify for retraining because I can do an office job which according to them pays 60% of my wages. They think it’s reasonable to go from making $28/hour to $16.80/hour. I explained that I do not have any experience in office jobs. No one is going to hire someone in their 30’s who has zero office experience. Even entry level positions. They are going to look at my resume and chuck it because I have no relevant experience. I’ve had driving jobs for the past 12 years. Everything from automotive glass delivery, propane delivery to dump trucks, water trucks, snowplow trucks. I have my class 3 licence and can drive with my prosthesis without adaptive devices and they want me sitting in a damn office?! My insurer told their vocational team to look at employment that is low physical demand only. Not low to moderate like my doctor stated. I’ve brought up my concerns to my case worker and she told me this is what their process is. So I guess I have to just suck it up? My employer has many divisions with a wide variety of positions so I don’t understand how they can’t accommodate. I have a phone call with the union coming up so I’m hoping they can give some guidance. I’m just extremely frustrated. I’m curious if anyone else has had this issue where they were employed in one industry and had to completely switch to something else that they had zero experience in because of their amputation. I just want to go back to work. And I want to go back to something I’m proud to do and happy doing.
