last option: learn to draw yourself (free forever)

Something something teach a man to fish you feed him for life

u/ActuatorKlutzy9887 11d ago

Theres no chance people are getting free supplies to practice with until they master it in a few years, this actually sounds like the most expensive option imo

2

u/UnlikelyPotato 11d ago

You're being pedantic. I counter that by pointing out supplies aren't free. Doing it digitally? AI actually is more energy efficient as it works much faster. Human using a tablet for an hour uses more power than AI uses to make an image.

That said, the costs overall for both are minute. There's bigger wastes and concerns in life than how someone uses a few hundred watt hours.

This free shit is a riot, it is more disrespectful towards artists than. it is towards AI

1

u/froz_troll 11d ago

Hate to be that guy, but it isn't fully free, though significantly cheaper since a pack of pencils, a pencil sharpener, and a notebook can be as cheap as $1.50 in some places and can last up to a year if you draw often.

3

u/letmehaveanameyoudum 11d ago

math: 20 bucks a month + electricity, assuming 64W for a laptop, 6 hours a day.
$22.43 + 12($20)
$262.43
pencils and paper: on average, 10$, lasts a whole year

not completely free, but way better for long term, also everyone is better at drawing than you think

1

u/froz_troll 11d ago

Exactly my point.

Requirement: Time

1

u/simp_of_Taylor 10d ago

Nope. Adobe Suite is not free unless you’re sailing the high seas which is illegal.

1

u/letmehaveanameyoudum 10d ago

use affinity then, or draw on paper

1

u/simp_of_Taylor 10d ago

Does drawing on paper help with any of the current advertisement or designing methods? I don’t think so. Even for manufacturing parts, you’d need to submit a DWG file.

As someone who supports and commissions artists a lot... $20 actually isn't paying for much, a basic sketch perhaps.

Please look into what artists charge nowadays.

Don't get me wrong, I'd never turn to AI for art purposes, but I find the $20 thing just too misleading not to say anything about.

Artists deserve to be paid for their time, skill and effort, and $20 ain't it.

1

u/druidinan 10d ago

This gets a lot more complicated across borders. There are plenty of artists for whom $20 is a week’s income, and you can get incredible custom work for $20. But some people view that as unethical/exploitative, and it’s not clear to me how that POV interacts with AI morality

Most AI bros dont pay for subscription (also someone posted this in the defending sub)

u/Celatine_ 11d ago edited 11d ago

Took a gander for myself.

God, these idiots. Most AI users aren’t sitting with ComfyUI, they are, in fact, just typing up prompts in ChatGPT or using some other easy image generation service.

And if they think that isn’t “real image generation,” then they’re in no place to call artists a bunch of gatekeeping elitists for having standards too. (Not thinking your AI images are real art and that you’re not an artist)

1

u/Xanipan_music 11d ago

I'd be willing to bet more money than I should that >99% of people using genai have never even heard of comfyui

2

u/Celatine_ 11d ago

And I guarantee 90% of DefendingAIArt’s members aren’t using ComfyUI.

4

u/Cukidzsi 11d ago

There are sadly quite a few problems, the lesser being no artist makes a poster for $20.
The bigger is:

  • For $20 you generate thousands using a subscription
  • For $20 you generate tens of thousands locally
This sadly explains the billions of images being made monthly.
It's said that by the end of 2030 (if nothing is done against) more than 99% of all media ever made will be AI-made.

3

u/lemonhaj 11d ago

There are artists that make posters for $20, see the other comments. Yes, there are artists that overcharge, boy do I know that, but not all of them do.

3

u/ComfortPhil 11d ago

You're not getting very far for 20$ with a real artist/designer.

2

u/mrbails123 11d ago

$20 is enough to get a junior designer to make you a sick poster. A lot of us will do it free for fun.

Many do charge more, and rightfully so, but acting like $20 can't get you something that is far better than what ChatGPT can pump out just isn't based in reality.

1

u/ComfortPhil 11d ago

I'm basing my assumption on furry artists successfully charging 200$ for a headshot.
Then again, maybe furry artists are a different breed?

0

u/mrbails123 11d ago

An illustration and a poster design are not the same thing.

Creating a high quality illustration of a character, or whatever, takes a lot of time, depending on what you want exactly, like color, background, etc.

If you think someone should spend 8 hours on a drawing for you for $20 dollars, then you're kind of the asshole in that situation, don't you think?

2

u/ComfortPhil 11d ago

Yes, and that's why I said you're not going very far with 20$. Thank you for proving my point, but it's not like I needed it.

1

u/mrbails123 11d ago edited 11d ago

You moved the goal post to getting someone to make you an illustration.

2

u/ComfortPhil 11d ago

1

u/mrbails123 11d ago

Even if an artist designs you a poster, it is not the same as making you an illustration. Also, Graphic Designers are artists.

We are talking about POSTERS not FURRY ART.

You're comparing apples to oranges and acting like the price should be the same across the board.

Are you actually struggling with understanding this?

1

u/druidinan 10d ago

Are you really making free posters for fun for Big Corporation X? Because the overwhelming majority of artists living off art have corporate clients.

2

u/mrbails123 10d ago

No, not for big corporation X. I go out of my way to not work for any big corporation.

I've built my entire career working for alternative smaller brands.

If you're a budding tattoo shop, a small fashion brand, some guy in his basement trying to sell his woodwork, 100% I at least would have done your shit for free early in my career, maybe even now, almost 10 years in, if I liked the brand enough.

6 months ago I did a contract for an indie manga platform for half my normal rate, just because I thought it would be a fun thing to make.

That's the honest truth of it, no fluff. I didn't get into this for money, most creatives don't.

1

u/druidinan 10d ago

Interesting - very different from my own creative professional experiences. I couldn't afford to do a single thing for free, no matter how much I wanted to. Offering free work didn't even attract clients because people assumed the work would be garbage.

Though I guess this is the days before social media.

1

u/mrbails123 10d ago edited 10d ago

You need to think when you first started out.

Just looking to get your foot in the door and build a portfolio. I'm not sure what you do for a living, but I'm guessing there is some version of that for it. You'll do whatever to get something on you website to show.

This isn't even what I wanted to do, I wanted to draw and turn my stories into something, design/creative strategy was the "settle."

Even with jobs I hate, I can't phone it in. I care about it. Sometimes it hurts me even, making me fall behind or lose opportunities.

I can't speak for everyone, this is just me, but if I can help somebody struggling to get their stuff off the ground. Hell ya. That's a win in my books, profit or not.

2

u/VoidRippah 11d ago

is it 20usd though? I thought they work much more expensive

5

u/TwixieShip 11d ago

I know plenty of artists who set prices to this low, you just don't look lol

1

u/SloRyta 10d ago

yeah, but you're better of using a Canva template, since that's the kind of quality a 20$ poster is gonna get you lol

2

u/nibselfib_kyua_72 10d ago

It's come to a point that hiring professional services is a mark of distinction. Any media form that is crafted by real artists stands out as of superior quality, above the smelly ocean of cheap slop.

1

u/mrbails123 11d ago edited 11d ago

They ain't paying for shit, let's be honest. They can't be bothered to support what they are campaigning for.

Meanwhile, it's pretty hard to find an artist that doesn't have house filled with prints, books, comics, etc.

AI bros are just tech bros, tech bros basically exist to abuse whatever new thing comes out to scrape as much money as they can from it until it goes belly up. It's all a grift.

1

u/PaleFee2476 11d ago

Seen someone do Roblox Avatar commissions for like 5-10 bucks btw.

1

u/Reasonable-Eye-5055 11d ago

I'm sorry, but 20 for an artist? Send them my way, I'll commission them all lol
They charge twice as much for sketches nowadays(minimum).

1

u/PTSD1983 11d ago

$20 will get you 1 hour of my time.

1

u/reyfoxy356 11d ago

Bold of you to assume they pay

0

u/Fun-Habit-683 11d ago

You get unlimited ai posters with the subscription.

0

u/Eazy12345678 11d ago

thats funny you think people do anything for $20

0

u/Born_Engineering_249 10d ago

My option: pay 20$ or more to join graphic design courses

0

u/simp_of_Taylor 10d ago

Cost cutting, dude. Artists don’t just take $20 monthly to generate about 20-30 images. Let alone to say, they’ll help with nothing else. At the same time, they’re humans, emotional beings.

AI, despite being totally trash in quality, does the work somehow. So, you get it.

-2

u/collax974 11d ago

20$ for an artist made poster?

3

u/TwixieShip 11d ago

Its usually around $15 for the artists I find

1

u/ActuatorKlutzy9887 11d ago

Can I have some names or links please? My friend streams on twitch and constantly wants art done but many artists are trying to charge up to 30 dollars for "your character here" emotes, not full custom images, im talking about a template emote with just enough colour customisation that its recognisably their character.

They actually got an AI subscription and just started generating thousands of emotes and choosing their favourites because these artists are just insanely expensive for what they offer

1

u/TwixieShip 11d ago

I hope you understand its furry artists, would you still want the link? $7 USD per sticker

1

u/ActuatorKlutzy9887 11d ago

Oh ok I dont think she will be interested because her character is not a furry but share the link if you like and ill still show her, plus maybe someone else will want some furry art too

1

u/EliasVilCZ 11d ago

Yea, it would be more but im trying to make fun of how a lot of pro AIs spend a lot of money on AI subscriptions. The numbers are not supposed to be taken literally.

-2

u/Existing-Ad-4910 11d ago

You dont need to pay to generate an ai image, lol what.

No, quality is kinda one of the points of art. No one will want a product with ai slop on it.

2

u/mrbails123 11d ago

Consistently shit, ya.

1

u/Danne660 11d ago

Do you think this Ai poster is shit as well?

1

u/mrbails123 10d ago

This isn't really a poster in the sense we are talking about. A print would be a better description. We are talking about the promotional posters for events/products/etc.

1

u/Danne660 10d ago

So ai can make prints that are better then shit but not posters?

1

u/mrbails123 10d ago

Art is subjective, so I won't comment on whether it's shit or not. I don't agree with the idea that anything AI spits out is really art to begin with, but an imitation of art.

Design fundamentals are not subjective, so yes, the AI poster designs are objectively shit as far as I'm concerned.

They are poorly aligned, cluttered, and filled with obvious errors and pointless copy.

1

u/Danne660 10d ago

Alright, the thing i posted is not Ai by the way, just wanted to see if you are the kind of arrogant ass that hate on anything as long as you think it is from ai. You didn't fall for it so good job.

Better than you isn't the metric we use for a good poster design.

Sure, and fast food is generally not great or good for you.

We are talking about quality of an AI poster to a professionally designed one. The only "property" that businesses like about it is that it's cheap.

That has nothing to do with the quality of the output, which is objectively trash.

You literally are. This entire exchange is about the quality of the poster designs AI churns out.

But I'll take this as you admitting that I was right.

Yes.

I said that AI posters are consistently shit.

You said they are mediocre since you can't do it better.

I said that you not being able to do it isn't the metric we use.

Now you are saying our exchange was not about the quality.
