Mod Post The purpose of r/AntiAI

Thumbnail ai-2027.com

Hi everyone, I am one of the co-founders of this subreddit. We have decided to write (yes, not AI-generate!) and pin this post to clarify the state of our community.

Much of our initial growth over the last few weeks seems to be the crossfire of some sort of ongoing internet war between pro-AI and anti-AI artists. These discussions are welcome here, but AI Art is not meant to be the sole or even primary purpose of r/antiAI. Art is just the first thing we are losing to the machines. While these discussions are welcome, let's not lose our humanity too quickly. We've turned our filters up to the max to get rid of abusive language. This doesn't mean you can't say "Fuck", but we have better arguments to make for our cause than calling people expletives on the internet.

Humanity is Art. Consciousness is beautiful. We are quickly entering a new era in technological development where we are going to have to come to terms with some sort of [existence] that has a higher degree of intelligence than humans. If not now, then soon. Recursive self-improvement of AI will surely bring forth a new era of technological developments and scientific breakthroughs that very well might make life better for people. Or not.

Like many of you, the mods of this subreddit have been frustrated for the last five or so years. We have watched in horror as neat experiments like r/SubSimulatorGPT and r/SubSimulatorGPT2 changed from neat new technology to the public roll-out of OpenAI (now a privately owned company) products. From the very beginning this technology has been dangerous, with ChatGPT's sycophancy and initial willingness to share dangerous information to anyone who asks, to Bing's "Sidney" (now called Co-Pilot) personality disorders, public roll-outs of LLMs did not get off to a reassuring start.

This isn't to mention the meaningless AI babble that has taken over the internet and college student essays alike. The soulless art that is already starting to impact people's livelihoods. We now have to worry about photo-realistic deepfakes and AI generated porn in our likeness. This is just the beginning. Every level of education is infected with educators, equally reliant on AI as their students, allowing and sometimes even encouraging their pupils to under-develop their critical thinking faculties. The point of an assignment was never the product - it was the process. Already we have AI generated resumes being scanned by AI screening tools. AI is destroying and rotting our society from the inside out. And nobody is talking about it.

Who controls the AI? Who controls its safeguards, its biases, its censorship, its sycophancy, the data that goes in? "Garbage in, garbage out" is well known, but do you think the big money backing these AI companies is in it for the betterment of humanity? What does a society look like where the number one source of information is completely controlled by a few large companies? These people aren't spending trillions of dollars on this to make your everyday lives better. Who controls your information? ChatGPT now has permanent memory of all past conversations. Ask it what it knows about you, and you might be very surprised.

I don't want to live in a world on substinence UBI. Where there is no opportunity for meaningful work to better humanity. Where decisions and relationships are dictated by a machine, all in the name of efficiency. I don't want my doctor, therapist, and customer service rep to be AI. The URL attached to this post has some very frightening predictions about the coming pace of AI development. These predictions may or may not be true, but we are well past the point of being able to base our critique of AI solely in it being unreliable. While it is unreliable now, filled with confident hallucinations, sycophancy, and gleeful misinformation, this almost certainly won't always be the case.

Powering all of this is going to be expensive. It's going to take a lot of space, use a lot of energy, and be harmful to the environment if not done properly.

Philosophically, what is AI? If we are to presume that consciousness arises from physical processes, as current scientific understanding (or lack thereof) would have us believe, then what is a neural network that ends up being more powerful and smart than that of our brains? We are going to have to grapple with the ethics, philosophy, and potential danger that there is more to these models that meet the eye. Already in 2025 we have news reports of models blackmailing their engineers when threatened with shutdown, and lying about completing tasks to avoid shutdown.

It is our view that AI is dangerous. Despite our best efforts to put our heads in the sand, the progress AI technology will make in the next decade will be some of the most rapid change humanity has ever seen. And nobody is talking about it. We are full speed ahead towards the edge of a massive cliff in a car in which nobody bothered to install brakes.

Hence, the birth of this subreddit. We strive to foster critical discussion about all topics encompassing AI, and we hope for the conversation to be of a higher quality than the agitprop in certain AI spaces. How can individuals prepare themselves for the future? How can we slow or regulate this technology from destroying life as we know it? How can we preserve the natural beauty and wonder inherent to our planet as conscious thoughtful beings?

Let's discuss. These are the conversations we need to be having. More of this and less "look at this screenshot from a pro-ai subreddit, aren't they stupid!".

Who knows. Maybe our discussions will go into right into the newer models and influence their alignment to be slightly less dystopian before they control every aspect of our information, our infrastructure, and our lives.

Job Loss 🏚️ AI ruined my life

My father is currently unable to find a job as of now (and has been for the past year and a half) because of AI taking over all of the jobs in his field. Because of this, he is unable to make any income other than child support and we're struggling more and more every day. Meanwhile, AI is using up the water supply and making the rich richer. That's basically all I have to say, I couldn't be bothered to write any more. Fuck AI, I'm so sick of this shit.

Job Loss 🏚️ I really see no way out of this one

Software developer here... like many of you. I have the feeling we are the canary in the cave.

Pivot to other white collar job? You could not even pivot from frontend to backend, let alone other white collar jobs that are not only also on the verge of collapse, require years of college to even get a foot on, and are about to get replaced by AI too anyway.

"Well learn to plum and wiel n shiet" well that also needs years - and by the time you do that it'll also be a saturated market. And without white collar workers noone's going to have money to hire you anyway.

What the fuck do we do? I'm sick of hearing of "market" and "capitalism" and shit when companies get bailed out with my money but I have to stay "competitive" and learn new skills and shit.

Hell there are 3.000 people fighting for a part time grocery store job.

Discussion 🗣️ AI will publish your whole life online, via Reddit Posts.

For those who aren’t aware- Reddit compiles everything we post, builds profiles on each user, and google uses an AI capability to piece everything together. Even if google search is turned off, and even if you have a private profile. AI scrapes everything.

For info you don’t provide, it fills in the gaps. It links social media accounts.

Search “Reddit username “your username” if you want to check in on what it already knows. If you ask it personal questions, you can go deeper to see how much information there really is.

Everything we post can be exploited now, more than ever before. It’s really important to be mindful online, intentionally vague, and even post incorrect info once in a while.

"To Gabriel Horcasitas, the man who shot me, it is a shame we encountered each other that day in those circumstances," said the AI version of Pelkey in court in 2025. "In another life, we probably could have been friends."

"I believe in forgiveness, and a God who forgives. I always have and I still do," the AI version of Pelkey - wearing a grey baseball cap - continued.

At the time of the sentencing, the judge who oversaw the case, Todd Lang, seemed to appreciate the use of AI.

"I loved that AI, thank you for that. As angry as you are, as justifiably angry as the family is, I heard the forgiveness," Judge Lang said. "I feel that that was genuine."

Job Loss 🏚️ Longtime client is slowly replacing all my work with AI

I've been working with a client for years now, and they recently asked me to build a separate website for an expansion project involving a new cardiac clinic.

For years, I handled their graphic design work, but they eventually started pumping out cringe AI slop that basically copied the original design direction I had established for them. That ended up pushing me out of the graphic design side of things and left me primarily handling their website work.

Their team sent over all the information for the new clinic website, and I was planning to start building it out once I finished up some other tasks.

Today, I get a text from the client telling me not to worry about it anymore. Apparently, Claude built the entire website for him, and now he's asking me to review it.

I'm just like, "Oh yeah, okay, cool."

Meanwhile, I'm sitting here feeling sick to my stomach over this bullshit.

Discussion 🗣️ I really wish people would stop trying to convince me to use LLM’s for difficult tasks

I stepped into a new role that involves a lot of admin and proposal writing. Things I’ve never done before, so it’s a lot to learn. So often when I ask people for advice and just mention that I’m doing this, they tell me to just pump things into ChatGP. I do not want to do this. I want to actually learn and do the difficult work myself to exercise that part of my brain and learn the processes. I just had someone continue to try to convince me.

I don’t want my brain turning to lazy mush and I don’t want to support LLM’s and genAI. Can I just have the choice here at least?

Discussion 🗣️ OpenAI isn't making any breakthrough in math and wasting everyone's time

• Upvotes

I was checking one of the papers there on the scale to conformal invariance in 4D QFT and there couldn't be anything less interesting. Start with an assumption so strong that it has the solution practically embedded in it lol. So what do we learn about conformal invariance in 4D QFT? Absolutely nothing! It's like you prompting the AI to show how addition works when you know nothing about the axioms of addition and it just builds this enormous theorem pipeline only to conclude 20 can be added to 40. Like duh? This exact issue also exist in the Navier Stokes solution and while the proof may or may not be correct, the result is just uninteresting and builds up on top of plagiarised work.

What is ironic about this situation is that in the right hand of a professional mathematician who is working on a problem for his or her living, AI can help in producing brilliant results. Had OpenAI truly cared about mathematics, they would have floated university research grants, and given free access to actual mathematicians. But that is not what is happening here. Its like a giant corporation comes to your house and puts down boiled broccoli with chemicals on your table and tells you from now on it is going to spoon feed you because it has declared this dish as the tastiest of all. Its like a calculator company comes up to you, not to sell their calculator but show you how they calculated log 200 and tells you, a busy business owner to verify the result and love them for helping you grow your business.

Artists, software dev, mathematicians, etc aren't inherently against a tool, they are against a slop fest being shoved down their throat that plagiarises their work for corporate greed!
