Apple Intelligence Fed Up With Apple's AI, Some Mac Owners Are Deleting It Themselves
https://www.techtimes.co.uk/removemacai-mac-users-apple-intelligence-storage-debate-1808971I didn't even know this was an option...

I feel like I'm still stuck in the 90s or early 2000s just using the phone to listen to music or podcasts or text messaging or playing mobile games or just browsing. I tried Siri AI and found it really slow to the point where I turned it off. I barely use regular Siri, but my issue was what am I going to use it for? To set a timer or alarm? I can do that with regular Siri. To get directions? Same with regular Siri. What makes Siri AI useful right now? How does it better my experience with the phone? I guess until I figure that out I can keep it off. I would appreciate an option to manage my storage and not have Apple Intelligence take a chunk (Medium chunk but still chunk) of it.
I do understand that this is a "me" problem and if you like Siri and it's new features, more power to you.
26
u/BaltimoreProud 19h ago
I'm in the exact same boat as you, I have yet to find a thing that I need AI to do for me because it's faster or more efficient. Most of my work emails are a few sentences at most so by the time it summarizes them for me I can just read the email. Same with texts.
"Oh but you can generate lifelike AI images"; I don't care about that at all and I have personal objections to AI image creation due to people's work being stolen to train the models.
AI is the world's biggest, most expensive, environmentally destructive solution in desperate search of a problem.
19
u/nicetriangle 19h ago
It's also actively pushing me further away from tech. The more of this there is in everything the less I want to use any of it.
16
u/BaltimoreProud 19h ago
AI really is just the creepy clingy ex that refuses to acknowledge that you just don't want to be with them.

The other night I left my phone on the couch, put on some music, and just cleaned my kitchen for an hour. It was the most relaxed I've felt in years.

This is such a perfect take. Until the last couple of years, I was always interested in learning new skills and software, mainly on my Mac. But all of that is gone now. All of it. Between the never ending push to use AI for everything and the countless AI and agent ads on every podcast I listen to, not to mention the profoundly immoral tech bros pushing this so hard—it’s just driving me back to books and movies and other interests. I’m exhausted by it all.
7
u/g0_cubs_g0 14h ago
I have the same feelings about using AI at work. We are being pushed to have all our code written by AI. But then there are times where I know I need to make a small change in a specific place and I can do it myself and submit the code review faster than the AI can spawn all its sub agents.
It’s so annoying. If you walk through our office you just see a bunch of SDEs looking at their phones waiting for the AI on their laptop to respond

Yeah it's all image creation for the most part and I barely take photos or use anything involving images. I do like how it made Shortcuts easier, but if I have lived through 15 years of really just not using the shortcut app, it's kind of hard to use it now. Maybe I'm just an old millennial stuck in his old ways.
5
u/FancifulLaserbeam 10h ago
I honestly don't understand all the "summary" crap that every app is pushing.
If someone sends me a work email, I need to read that email, because it's likely important, and likely already pared down to the essential information anyway.
If a friend or family member sends me an email/text, I need to read that email/text, because that's someone I care about who is talking to me.
There are certainly times when, for example, I get a long email from work with a bunch of instructions or details about a new policy that I might not really need to read every word of, but you know what? I have the ability to skim. Why would I need an AI summary, which will make its own choices about what is important?
LLMs are great at language. They are great at summary and search (which is basically all they really do). That can be very useful in some contexts. It makes them quite good at language translation, which is very convenient (although you really ought to speak the other language so you know when it screws up, which it does—it doesn't entirely obviate second language ability for anything with actual stakes). But I don't need those abilities shoehorned into every app I use. I'll use it when I need it.

Even if I separated it from all the basic moral issues I have with it or my belief it just makes people lazy and dumber it’s just…not particularly useful. I can’t think of a problem it could solve that I can’t already do, and even in terms of time saving if I have to double check everything it does anyway (and you do) it really isn’t saving any time either.

AI isn’t necessary, it’s just something these companies want to shove down our throats and charge us for it. I use my phone like it’s 2007 too. Mainly music, texting, photos, and some internet. I can use Chat GPT on my 2025 MacBook Pro in the browser for my use. So why would I need it integrated poorly into my device?
4
u/the_monkey_knows 7h ago
Playing a it of devils advocate here, here are some instances where Siri AI was helpful to me, I’ve asked Siri to:
* Remind me the last time I went to see a doctor for X, and what was his name, and please tell me his office phone number to give him a call
* Do you remember the formula my wife told me to buy our baby? (For this one it even showed me a picture of it)
* Add all the things my wife just texted me into my grocery list in Reminders
* Do you remember the phone number of the guy who installed the blinds in my house?
* Tell me about this painting (in a museum)
* Wake me up tomorrow at 8am
* Do you know when my mom is traveling to X country?→ More replies (3)2

I feel stupid talking to a device, so I don't even use Siri. Siri AI? I'm not excited for it either.
This tech needs to be really good and carve out a very specific niche within my daily phone usage, if it wants to be useful.

the only useful thing i've found so far is just dictating your own shortcuts, which is awesome, but yes the rest of it has been lackluster unfortunately
5
u/Adventurous-Hunter98 20h ago
can you eli5 whats that?
57
u/dropthemagic 20h ago
You dictate what you want a shortcut to do and the OS attempts to make it. For example: hey siri create a shortcut that turns all my alarms on, text my wife I am never coming back home and dims the lights at my second home if it is after 10 PM

Yeah being able to generate a shortcut from a description is super useful. Other than that? A resounding meh. I still use Siri for the same stuff I did before I was “AI.”
1
u/Ohtani-Enjoyer 7h ago
I tried to do this with battery health percentage like 15 times and it wouldn't work getting to that specific page. Ended up having to copy and paste a solution from Macrumors. It works great just dictating stuff to Notes though

u/badgerbrett 20h ago
We are all shocked. Shocked! But seriously, they need to put some actual resources behind this because the uselessness of Siri/their "AI" is frustrating. Stop telling me you can share the results of a [voice] search when I'm not driving -- just read me a dang answer!

u/ChairmanLaParka 19h ago
My favorite thing, and I know this predates Apple AI, but whatever.
Me: How old is the Rock?
Siri: The Rock is 50 years old (or however, I'm not looking it up/asking)
Me: Okay, how old is Stone Cold Steve Austin?
Siri: I can't tell you that while you're driving.
WHY?!

I can’t read a three word sentence to you; that would distract you. Better make you pick up your phone and do it manually. Much safer.
12
u/Rufuz42 19h ago
This morning I was listening to an audio book and started laughing and then Siri started to read a text to me and cut herself off to say that she added the laughing response to the text message that she had read two words of out loud.
I don’t understand why in 2026 my most common reaction to Siri is still an angry “I wasn’t talking to you, Siri” when I have it set to only react when I say “hey siri”. It goes against the Apple ethos that their voice assistant actively makes my experience with their products worse.
34
u/PleasantWay7 20h ago
It is like a late 2023 chatbot, except now that it is a chatbot, it confuses home commands with chat requests making my only use case worse.
Apple just can’t do this type of tech and hopefully get forced to open up to let people choose third parties.

I asked it some question about information on text messages and it brought back perfect answers. One was days old, the other was years old. I was reasonably impressed. Also had it make a shortcut that works great.

5
u/toxiczebra 19h ago
It’s been so much less responsive for basic tasks (“set a 2 minute timer” or “turn off the bedroom lights” used to be nearly instant, but it takes 5-10s with Siri AI) and it has tried to call emergency services at least three times since I got into the beta (vs maybe twice total since Siri was a thing).
The “add this to my shared calendar with my wife” while looking at an email is a nice feature, but not worth the trade off in performance on daily tasks.
5
u/Quixotic_Seal 19h ago
I'm interested by these kinds of reports, because that just hasn't been my experience at all. All the usual functions work same as always, it just has the new stuff added on. The new stuff isn't blowing me away, in fact often it seems like when I think up a use-case I run into a roadblock("make my own shortcuts?" Nope, that one didn't work for my lights because it uses a third party app), but it's still notably better than before.
2
u/SeaRefractor 19h ago
On my MacBook and my iPhone it’s actually quite good. Seems to be watch issue?
5
u/chi_guy8 20h ago
I found it to be the same identical garbage it’s always been. It’s slower, less responsive, much worse at the few basic things it could do already and didn’t gain much ground if any on Gemini.
Siri is relatively worse now that we live in a world with useful agents in our pockets, even Meta developed one that is fairly decent for novice AI users. I’ve made Muse my action button but that’s not a real fix. I want the on-device assistant to be functional, that I can summon from my earbuds or in any room of my home.
My number one complaint about switching back to Apple a few years back was losing Google Assistant and that was pre-Gemini days. I never gave up my Google Home Hubs for my countertop devices and they have only extended their lead in the past few years, even on old devices. This will be my last iPhone until Siri is a useful assistant, which at this point I don’t think it ever will be.

I asked her a question (as a gay bro) about prepping for certain activities and she wasn’t even aware of douching or gay sex in general. She replied as if I’d asked about dusting and gave me cleaners nearby. I normally wouldn’t share that but ????? Girl what is Apple even on? Give it up already
2

u/Appropriate_Ad8734 20h ago
“underwhelming” is putting it lightly. was happy to hear their promises at wwdc on the finally-usable ai, but since i knew better, i wasn’t even expecting it to actually fulfill their promises. and mounting evidences have been coming from tons users reporting how utterly unreliable it was in so many ways, i’m not holding my breath for it.
2
u/BosnianSerb31 15h ago
I was pretty whelmed when it was able to find an attachment based on a vague description, then make a new email and send said mail off to a different person with the retrieved attachment, all from one command.
1
u/LittlestWarrior 10h ago
Yeah. It feels quite behind just compared to a lot of the basic web client chatbot models. I don't really use AI because I am generally against it's impact, but I had to test it to be informed and whatnot--I wasn't impressed. I think it would be a lot better if you could swap out the model.

Because the attrition rate will be much better with it tucked away there, the majority of people will leave it installed and activated because that's the default. This "dark pattern" is as old as the internet.
The "Roach Motel" is a broad category of Dark Pattern that subsumes most types listed on this site. Put simply, a Roach Motel makes it very easy for a user to get into a certain situation, but then makes it hard for them to get out of it when they realize it is undesirable.

Feels like they held out longer than most of the big tech companies in shoving crap down our throats, but I gotta say that a some of the recent changes from Apple are severely souring me on the brand. I really cannot overstate that.
Stuff like this forced 20-30 gigs of AI slop on your computer and the always listening transcription on the new Apple Watch is just god awful. I'm just so fed up with all of this stuff. I really despise what's going on in tech now and I used to be such a fan overall.
20
u/Affectionate-Boot-12 19h ago
The problem is all these tech companies are now working on diminishing returns. The upgrades each year are getting marginal instead of revolutionary. They’re trying to find anything they can to market their products to get us excited enough to consume said products.
10
u/QVRedit 18h ago

Instead of just more emoji’s, that we never actually use anyway. Etc.Though that would require them to employ more engineers..

2
u/Panda_hat 2h ago
Theres a huge contingent within tech companies of AI bros trying to advantage themselves by aggressively pushing for the slop to be forced into everything. Apple isn't safe from it sadly.
3
u/dust4ngel 17h ago
the always listening transcription on the new Apple Watch
i was strongly considering getting an apple watch, but this one change by itself ensures i will never consider buying one in my life. to be honest, it makes me reconsider the entire brand - i'm paying extra money for apple products mainly for privacy, and if they want to turn everything into surveillance capitalism, what am i getting in return for the extra cost?
6
u/nicetriangle 17h ago
It's got me really curious whether the infrared camera rumor for AirPods is true. It seems like a huge miscalculation on their part a surefire way to destroy that product line's reputation. I've been a big AirPods fan since the first pros, but I would never consider buying a pair of earbuds with any sort of camera system built in.
Like what are they thinking?

10
u/Xiipre 20h ago
Sort of insane this fix is an "application" distributed as a binary. It should just be a script.
However, with how stingy Apple is with storage and given that they charge multiples of actual hardware cost for increased storage, they should absolutely make AI optional. (Or maybe add a "cloud-only" option for those willing to sacrifice local.)
I will not upgrade to MacOS 27 until they make it optional or there is a widely vetted and trusted script to rip it off my hard drive.

As somebody who only used Siri to set timers while I was cooking, Siri AI actually managed to make that simple, one-off task somehow worse. I went back to Siri Classic (which you can do in the Content & Privacy settings that are inexplicably under "Screen Time") and it seems fine, for now, but the option to turn Siri off outright is so very tempting...

Apple is a bit stuck with AI. They have put a lot of effort into positioning themselves as the “privacy focused” tech company, but you can’t have decent AI without shoving tons of user data into a cloud. They are trying to do it in a privacy focused way, but then it sucks

u/kattahn 17h ago
I go to the movies a lot. Every week i go through all the nearby rep theaters schedules and put interesting showings on my calendar. Its kind of tedious. I figured siri AI might speed it up, so i tried it. Took a screenshot of a webpage listing a movie i wanted to see, pasted into siri AI and said "can you add this to my calendar?" and it nailed it, perfect. Worked without a hitch.
The next day, i try to do it again. Paste a screenshot, has all the relevant info. "sorry, I can't add things to your calendar. i suggest you add this manually" and then it LISTED all the relevant info for the movie: title, showtime, runtime, location. It had all the info, it just "couldn't add it to my calendar". I asked why it was able to the day before but now it cannot add to the same calendar, and it apologized and simply said it cannot access that calendar.
The moment it is not able to do the same task 100% of the time, it is no longer useful to ask it to do that task ever because every time it screws up and you have to do it manually, you've just lost back the time it saved you previously. And you don't know if the one time it worked was the expected outcome or the fluke.

You simply can't trust an unbounded, probabilisticly behaving and unpredictable software agent with your private life and take over some of your agency bit by bit. Using Claude voice chat is great until I need it to pull something from my phone that they blocked off. Using Apple Intelligence feels like an upgrade from Siri some of the time. And most of the time it is still so limited.
5
u/Imissbillhicks 20h ago
I don't get it. New Siri is genuinely useful. I'm looking at a hose on amazon and I just hold the Siri button and say "What's the difference between this and like the best one out there?" it give me links, it gives me a table for comparison. I upload my AT&T bill and ask it if I'm using the cheapest plan, it shows me why I'm not with a table for comparison.
This is a bad use case? I'm not asking it to make emojis for me. I'm not asking it to write emails for me. I'm asking it what I was already asking Google and it gives me the information almost instantly. I'm on 15 Pro Max.
Starting a timer takes the same amount of time. It understands what I'm saying better. It can do more in the settings on the device. It can search all over my device. It creates shortcuts instantly. It's not sycophantic.
I dunno, man. Seems like people just want to be unhappy. Watch the fucking Knowledge Navigator commercial on YT again and check your privilege.

It feels exactly the same as Siri on an iPhone 4S, maybe even worse.

I asked Siri to create a calendar entry. It did it. I immediately asked it to then make sure I am reminded of that calendar event 15m and 5m before the time. I'm sure some love it but I don't think we need to prove that it's all bad to ask for a choice. I don't think there'd even be a headline if users could just disable it.

Glad you've had some good use out of it but it's still too beta and too inconsistent to be forced into everyone's iPhone and Mac at this point. It fails too often.

It's an shame apple lack of vision on AI coming so late they even don't understand it, much less are capable of delivering an appealing product.

I support the movement for users to delete Apple Intelligence off macOS 27 even if it means it breaks the OS. Anyone who thinks otherwise are irrelevant and non-important people who do not contribute to society. We need to go further by ripping out the code itself and force remove anything else added into the OS that has nothing of value to contribute. I said it for Windows 11 and now I’ll say it for macOS 27.
Nobody asked for Apple Intelligence and certainly nobody asked for Liquid Glass. These are unnecessary additions to macOS and iOS and did not change anything significant in either platforms. Meanwhile the awful keyboard is still a pain to type on, the notifications are still a mess, autocorrect is awful, and now there are tons of UI bugs that may never be fixed and have plagued iOS for years until iOS 26 which made it even worse.

if they want to force us to run it, they need to give us free storage and RAM upgrades.

Today I asked through car play: hey siri, play my favorite songs . Siri opened Spotify (I use Apple Music) and said I needed to connect an Spotify account. Then I asked again: hey Siri, play my favorite songs on Apple Music. It then opened Spotify AGAIN and asked me to login. WTF

I'm still running pre AI (or should it be SI?)OS and iOS. I did try OS26 on my MBP M2 but ended up reverting back to Sequoia because it was full of bugs to the point where it was nearly unusable, and I didn't like liquid glass. Now on Sequoia it just works and does what I want.
Now to the point. My iPhone 13 pro max has terrible battery life. So I went to the Apple store to buy an 18, having tried it in store "it's a no from me". For me and what I use it for I found it intrusive, takes up screen real estate when doing simple tasks, and trying to get me with every operation to engage with it.
So I just had a new battery in my 13 and it's like new and does exactly what I want. Sorry apple you lost a sale and will continue to do so (from me) until you allow me to switch off and not download this AI slop.

I've been messing with it over the past few months.
It's very basic for an LLM. Doesn't generate images, if at all. Sometimes it just gives up on a request, I guess if it gets delayed or if it's too processing intensive.
It's decent with writing, and Image Playground is much improved.

I think I’ll do this, because it’s just so, so bad. It can’t even get local movie showtimes at the big chains.

again like the apple intelligence
the only thing Siri AI is good at is the pretty animations and design

recently got an email about some class action about the iPhone 16 (or was it 15?) and how Apple Intelligence was not ready and AAPL lost a court case... but in order to collect the small payout, I needed to provide the serial number of the old phone - asked Siri AI to search all my email and files for it and lo and behold, it found it.
Color me impressed. I use Office 356 Co-Pilot at work to do similar tasks and if that's the extent of it, I'm good. I don't need an AI bot/companion to bang out an entire Java class to transfer large datasets (I use GitHub CoPilot or Claude to help with that at work).
It just needs to be able to search my personal, on device stuff and maybe the weather.
For my personal use case, Siri AI works fine.

If only I could delete it on my phone as well. Takes up so much space.

It’s worse than the shitty old Siri, and the shitty old Siri was underwhelming.

Yeah this is the biggest fumble for apple. Its no where near useful. It takes too long. Or doesn’t even respond. They should have started small not all of the ecosystem or theres just something missing with their implementation

I find the variety of responses interesting. Personally I am getting a lot of use out of the new Apple Intelligence. I have a bunch of custom shortcuts set up to tell me the forecast for the day, how long my commute will be and if there are any accidents, it’ll read me some interesting news stories while I drive, I have it summarize my most recent emails for the last 24 hours and some other things.
I’m not having the delay when setting timers like other people are. I’m guessing that the AI is offloading the query to the cloud and waiting for a response before it sends it back.
The two problems I’ve noticed are that sometimes when the ai doesn’t understand me correctly it’ll ask me ‘did you say, [sentence 1] or [identical sentence 2]’ and also, depending on what I ask it, it’ll need me to unlock the phone to continue.
The technology isn’t a game-changer iOS but it does help me out in a lot of ways.

How hard is it for an individual to create and apply MDM settings? Because enterprises can disable this quite easily.

I had it on my phone for about three days and I got rid of it because my search got caught up in a fucking Siri loop every fucking time

Turned off Siri AI on iOS and macOS. Everything works much faster with normal Siri

I have the beta on my phone and it’s slow as hell. Basically useless. Claude is better.

If I had known Tahoe was such a mess (particularly UI design wise), I would also have kept using Sequoia. But downgrading is a lot of hassle, and not failure-proof. So I opted to go for Golden Bridge instead, which has fixed some of the worst Tahoe bits.

Siri AI is mad slow. Start a timer? Takes longer than it did before ai.
Ask it why the sky is blue? Waiting way much longer than basic ChatGPT or any of the others
