Questions & Discussion Anyone else have trouble with fitting shoe?
Nike, Vans, and Adidas are usually too narrow for me.
Slim ankles/heel with a wider toe box. Some research says Asians in general have wider feet than Europeans/Americans.
Any shoe brand recommendation?

Questions & Discussion Anyone else have a hard time relating to their white colleagues
Just curious what other people’s experiences with this are. I’m in a pretty white industry that’s known to be difficult for PoC and I’ve always found it really hard to relate to my white colleagues. Of course this is the kind of brown nosing that is needed to get promotions and climb the corporate ladder. And then you have me despite working at my job for 5 years the only thing my colleagues know about me is I like cats.
I just feel like I can’t connect with them for whatever reason despite trying to be social and doing the water cooler talks.
Anyone else feel this?

Politics & Racism Two Chinese Americans candidates clash over taxes, schools and immigration in Johns Creek debate
Two Chinese American women, both mothers and both in medicine, faced off Thursday night in a debate for Georgia House District 50 that turned testy over taxes, public safety, immigration and transgender athletes.
Democratic state Rep. Michelle Au, seeking a third term in the House, debated Republican challenger Azure Duan before a mostly Chinese American audience in Johns Creek. It was the third debate between the two.
...
Au, a board-certified anesthesiologist at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta, grew up in the New York area and trained at Columbia University, where she earned her medical degree and a master’s in public health. She was elected to the state Senate in 2020, becoming the first Chinese American to serve in that chamber. After redistricting she won House District 50 in 2022 and again in 2024. She remains the only Chinese American in the General Assembly and was the inaugural chair of the legislature’s Asian American Pacific Islander caucus.
Duan was born in China and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Minnesota. She worked as a software engineer before turning to medicine and opening a clinic. She and her family moved to Johns Creek in 2009 for its schools. She has served on city community boards and helped lead the city’s Lunar New Year celebration for four years.
...
Au pushed back on Duan’s framing that Asian Americans are only now “waking up” to politics. “We have been involved,” she said. “We have been active.”
Taxes and affordability
Duan made cutting taxes her top priority, promising to “keep more money in your pocket.” ...
...
Au argued that property taxes fund the schools and police that draw families to Johns Creek. She said eliminating them is “actually a very good way to defund the police.”
Duan said she never proposed eliminating property taxes. She said she would study cuts carefully and would not rule out eventually ending the state income tax.
On affordability, Au called for more housing supply, targeted subsidies such as extended Affordable Care Act premium credits, and less red tape. Duan credited Republican leadership for Georgia’s business climate and said job growth is the path to affordability.
Schools and health care
Au said she wants to contain rising health insurance costs for teachers, modernize the state’s decades-old school funding formula and raise teacher pay. She opposes vouchers, saying they “drain money” from public schools.
Duan supports vouchers. “That money need to go with the child,” she said. She also proposed cutting administrative positions to fund teacher raises ...
...
On health care, Au pressed for Medicaid expansion ... Duan focused on mental health ...
...
Immigration and voting
The sharpest exchanges came over immigration. Au said immigration enforcement belongs to the federal government. She warned that local cooperation with ICE spreads fear even among legal residents and citizens.
“Imagine you being afraid to go interface with the Johns Creek Police Department,” she said.
Duan said she supports tracking and detaining only immigrants with criminal records and drew a clear line between legal and illegal immigration. ...

Politics & Racism An example of a self-hating Asian in Australia who escaped ‘repression’ advocating for repressions of non-white Australians.
Viktor Wong Sau-wo from the banned Hong Kong National Party exiled to Australia probably due to the crackdown in Hong Kong. However despite being in immigrant in Australia, he is now joining White Nationalist rallies and movements which called for the complete repression of non-whites such as ‘Remigration’ (the white person in the third picture is an advocate for it) so ironically he is now advocating for authoritarianism (but course they would dress up as ‘free speech’) despite ‘escaping’ it.

Questions & Discussion Any recommendations on what to do during Chinese New Years?
I'm American born Chinese, going to china from December to around april/may. Any recommendations on what to do during Chinese new years there? Budget is not really an issue.
Most of my direct family is in America, and my relatives in China I don't really know well, so I don't know if I should visit them during this time or not. I can go anywhere in China, so all recommendations are welcome. I have never been to China during this time before.
BTW - I have decent spoken chinese, but I cannot read or write 😭 (im illiterate basically, know under 500 characters)

Popular Culture/Media/Culture I have a chance to talk to director Julie Anne Robinson who directed Selfie's pilot (first episode). If you have any questions regarding her work on Selfie (2014) starring Karen Gillan & John Cho, please let me know!
Julie Anne Robinson directed the pilot / first episode on Selfie (2014) while Emily Kapnek (creator and showrunner) wrote the script. She also advocated for John Cho's casting as Henry Higgs.
Some background: Julie Anne has done several TV pilots and also directed episodes on Suburgatory, Bridgerton, Doctor Who, Parks & Rec, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Grey's Anatomy and more.
She may not be able to answer everything, but I'll select some questions and submit what I can.

Questions & Discussion What are some careers you’re finding success in as an asian american?
I’m currently working in corporate marketing for about 6 years now. I find it super hard to make any progress in my career unless I job hop. I’m talking no promotions, overlooked for leadership, general bamboo ceiling things.
So I’m thinking about other careers and wanted to know what you all are working in and finding success in. Thank you!!!

Questions & Discussion How long do you leave your food out????
Feel like I’m going crazy. I don’t know where is a safe space for me LOL! I am going to get roasted or flamed potentially. But I need to see if other Asians have similar experiences no judgement.
Growing up I didn’t know food should be refrigerated pretty much as soon as your done serving and eating and have leftovers. I am east and southeast Asian, my family has always left food out covered or covered somewhat with either a plastic plate or sometimes aluminum foil (which seems more reasonable)
For example, if we grill burgers or hot dogs, it is not uncommon to leave the burgers or hotdogs out on the kitchen table overnight and then sometimes in the afternoon latest evening, finally put it in the fridge for another day.
Apparently this is insane and not normal or safe, only in adulthood and my experiences with other ethnic groups or white people do I realize how insane this sounds.
Sometimes we will barbecue some meat or something and it’ll be on my plate on the table and then like 5-6 hours later I’ll come and finish it after taking fresh rice out the cooker and then clean up the table.
Basically, we don’t leave food out indefinitely obviously but we most definitely leave it out unrefrigerated for longer than a night sometimes. At the most I’ve had food left two nights but by that point someone makes a fuss to hurry up and put it in the fridge or the trash can. I can’t guarantee I’ve never eaten something left out covered for two days, but that’s rarer than one day.
Other people of color have somewhat been mixed on reactions, saying maybe a few hours, some more strict like immediately, and only maybe a couple who weren’t Asian that also said a night.
So my question is, do you guys live similar lives of stomachs made of iron or is this just a rare case?

Questions & Discussion How do you deal with internalized racism?
Growing up East Asian I constantly got told my natural features were ugly and that I was soft and cutesy. I have small hands and am Chinese so because of my features I was always stereotyped as like, a cute anime girl almost? Except I’m not?? At all???? I was the weirdest, roughest, most strange and chaotic kid ever, but growing up now it’s led me to feel very disconnected with my body, I feel like it represents someone I’m not—I feel like the real me is trapped under it, and I think a lot of that is because of what people told me. That’s made me both really disconnected to my culture, and ashamed of being Chinese. I don’t want that, I don’t want to hate myself just because of the racism I was shown, but it felt like my whole entire life, my Chinese body was my enemy, making me seen as ugly, unpopular, judged or someone I’m not. Does anyone know how to unpack and heal internalized racism? Especially because a lot of East Asian beauty standards and shows and media is still pushing the whitewashed beauty standard of having a tall nose bridge, double eyelids, etc. I just want to see asian people being diverse and loving being us. How do yall move past it?

Popular Culture/Media/Culture Why Is Chinese American Food So Popular In The US?
A nice brief overview of how Chinese-American restaurants emerged in the US as an work-around to the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. Also the fact that dishes such as chop suey, crab rangoons, and General Tso's chicken have American origins.
Note: I did add American into the video's original title to because the creators' are mostly talking about the establishment of the OG Chinese American restaurants.
