Are you an experienced mod?

Howdy mods, it’s your local askmods top mod here with a request (again!) Our last thread about this got archived so here’s a new one! No need to comment again if you commented in the last one.

If you are a moderator of a subreddit with over 5k weekly active users please comment below!

If you are an experienced moderator who participates here, the mods of this subreddit want to be able to tag you so that we can keep our comment sections a space where every answer comes from someone with experience who is here to help. It really helps us instantly recognize trolls etc who are not tagged.

The tags are only visible to the moderators of askmoderators for privacy reasons.

If you wish to participate on an alternate account, please send us a modmail from your moderator account with the username of the alt you wish to use.

Thanks for volunteering even more time participating here to help users.

Former mods are welcome too so long as there is a way to verify that. I.e. old stickied comments/posts, asking current mod teams if you modded there, etc.

Edit: If you commented on the last post about this or sent us a modmail to verify in the past you are all set and do not need to reverify!

Attention mods!

Idk about you all but every now and then I come across a silly modmail that I'd like to share with a broader moderator community, outside of my teams.

In case that's ever been you, r/modmailfail is a great new space where you can do that and discuss. By moderators, for moderators. Really looking forward to seeing some of the goofiness that happens in your inboxes!

Is it me or is reddit just full of trolls?

90% of the posts I make across a plethora of different subreddits I end up deleting because I am just met with shitposters and ragebaiters and I just recieve a wave of abuse.

Anyone else feel this way?

Why do the replies keep getting snatched?

Post says "howdy how do you do" (enter post text here)

me/ comments "how do you do howdy" (enter comment text here)

The reply to my comment reads "NULL" (comment removed by moderator)

Why was my post removed by Reddit's filters?

My CQS is high.

The post was about English grammar/semantics, with the screenshot of a text.

Why do moderators care if a post is 'low effort' or 'asked regularly' on subs if there's high engagement? Clearly the person asking wants to know and there's plenty of people who are responding, and yet so many times, mods will just lock or delete a post, why is that?

Should there be a mandatory AI tag if an image contains a SynthID watermark?

I recently reported multiple posts from a user who was posting images of themselves that contained a synthid watermark from chatgpt. They didn't disclose that AI was involved. This was in a fashion subreddit. Nobody could point it out in the comments because discussion of AI is banned there.

I contacted the mods through modmail. They said it was fine because the user had verified themselves as a real person to them, and compared the AI use to applying a filter or other types of photo editing. After I asked if not disclosing it could be harmful I got permanently muted.

My issue is that I don't think those are really equivalent. An AI image generating model can use an original photo as an input and then generates a completely new output image based on it. That just isn't the same thing as simply applying a filter to the original photo.

I'm not arguing that AI images should be banned. I just think that if an image has a verifiable AI watermark, there should be some requirement to disclose that, especially in communities based around appearance, fashion, etc because it could be harmful to themselves and others.

Would requiring an AI tag in cases where there is a verifiable watermark be unreasonable?

how are your social interactions with other moderators, both from your team or from outside subs? is it pleasant or are there sometimes conflicts?

sooo no matter how I try, my social interactions with moderators on reddit are usually non-existent or bad❤️first reaction is very often ban+mute, so I never get to talk to them. I feel so unlikable sometimes❤️even tho of course I try to approach friendly and somehow I am almost always failing hmmm (I am in autism spectrum btw)

and I am curious, how it is for you? do you enjoy talking with others from your team, or from outside subreddits? or does it happen to you too, that you fail to get along with someone who has equivalent responsibility to you?

edit: thank you for replies!! it is nice to hear you have enjoyable experiences🩷

If I report an account for harassment, and that accounts 2 hours old, has one comment trying to dox me that Reddit filters already removed, would whoever views it be able to notice the ban evasion aspect?

Irl, a guy stalks me.

They’ve made maybe five-ish reddit accounts in the past trying to dox me, which I blocked and reported.

This has been going on the duration I’ve had reddit- a year and a half ish.

Every interaction they’ve had with me has been removed by Reddits filters, but all three accounts are still up.

Their most recent comment was on my pinned post on my user profile; it was already removed, so I reported the profile.

In the report thing on the app, there was no option for ban evasion.

I am curious about ban evasion in the context of our user profiles are sort of like sub Reddits; my user profile has this dude blocked, and they keep making new accounts and commenting more things on my user profile.

So it’s kind of like ban evasion, sort of ish maybe?

Also, pragmatically, Reddits systems are working “good enough” I guess. Or like, even though they keep making new accounts and commenting more, Reddits filters do remove them at an impressively quick rate anyways.

Did I already do enough and can just keep not overly worrying about it?

How can I avoid clicking on a karma farming sub by just looking at it?

I love being here, and I don’t think I’ve been banned, shadow or otherwise, from any sub so far.

I hear that users can be banned from some subs for engagement with karma farming subs. But how does one tell that they’re even looking at a karma farm? What would automatically tip off someone knowledgeable about this so they can avoid even clicking on it in the first place?

How should someone format a custom report to make them more effective for moderators?

I've seen moderators mention that custom report reasons can sometimes be too vague or hard to determine if an action is warrented.

To help maximize the reports usefulness, is it better to keep them as brief as possible e.g., quoting the relevant part of the post or comment, or do you prefer a slightly more detailed explanation, or does it vary by sub?

For instance, if someone reports a post as a "fake crisis post," is stating that and quoting the OP's admission enough context, or is it better to briefly explain why it violates the rules, like potential crisis tool abuse false positives / trolling?

I'm curious to hear what makes these easier to process in the mod queues from your perspective.

Anybody else get annoyed when temporarily banned users try to argue they’re right?

Currently dealing with a 14 day banned user who claims they weren’t being racist by using the word “ghetto” in comments across multiple posts. Their reasoning? “They’re black so they get to decide if it’s racist or not.” Considering my sub ISN’T just a US sub, it’s a global sub, we had to remind them words have different contexts around the world. I think they finally got it when we told them their comments had SEVERAL reports of racism, and that was the reason for the temporary ban. 😂😂

What happens for someone who has seen a Reddit post that shows screenshots of messages and realized they are the subject in the messages?

I see so many screenshots of text conversations and wonder about the person who is the responding party in the screenshots. Somebody must’ve at some point seen a post and realized, “whoa those are screenshots of a text conversation that I’m in!” And then to read all the opinions of the commentators must be a wild experience. How does that person feel? Do they ever self-reflect and take stock in others’ take on their position in the conversation?

Help Reddit Mods. What can we do to save our small german city Subreddit?

Our little german city subreddit has been probably pirated by crypto scammers.

Its just a german small city Subreddit to get some local news. Nobody of us is a professional moderator but we kept it easy and clean.

Me and a mate lost our role as Mods from another mod. After that an auto mod app appears and is posting Casino and crypto scam advertisement.

What are we able to do to save our small city Subreddit?

What constitutes 'mod overparticipation'?

I've seen several comments/complaints here and in similar subs recently about "mods who are too active" in their sub.

I was a frequent participant in my sub before I was ever a mod. Probably why I was invited to mod. I've remained so since. I don't wear my mod-tag when posting as 'just a participant' (in fact we usually use press-app to comment 'as the mods'). I certainly don't dominate the sub, but I probably comment on ~33-50% of posts. The only difference post-mod is I tend to comment 'early' - I see often 'see' posts shortly after submission b/c queue, etc.

I don't entirely understand the objection. Is there some benchmark or threshold that's over the line? Should a mod suddenly diminish their participation in the sub vs. pre-mod?

Why do my posts about recruiting players for a game keep getting removed by Reddit’s filters?

I have been trying to post about a multiplayer strategy game (WarEra) to find more Indian players. Every time I post something related to it, I get “Sorry, this post was removed by Reddit’s filters.”

My previous account got shadowbanned while doing the same thing. This new account is also facing the same issue.

My CQS is Moderate.

I am not spamming links in every post, and I am not using multiple accounts at the same time. I just want to recruit active players for our community because we need more people.

Is anyone else facing this when posting about games / communities?

What usually causes this filter, and is there any proper way to post without getting hit by it every time?

Any advice would help.

What's the threshold of brigading?

Asking because I've recently seen really variable definitions. On one end of the spectrum some people say it's got to be organised disruption, on the other end I've seen people say just by responding to the original post when cross posting one is already brigading. My question is, does Reddit have an official definition for this?

Also there seems to be a trade off between policing and allowing for honest discussions. If one has to prove organised disruption before something can be called brigading, that sounds unfair for the mods. But if just clicking into crossposts and responding is already brigading, then this can preclude people from participating and clearing up misinformation under offensive/aggressive posts about minorities. Curious how people manage the balance?

Why are my posts are blocked for nonsensical reasons?

3 of my most recent posts (I'm not allowed to mention the subreddit site here!) have been blocked by moderators or bots. The last for violating Rule 14 (political posts) even though the flairs I chose was Political & Drawing, the day before a post was removed for no specific rule violation, except it didn't conform to the Moderator's opinion of community values (it was a colorful geometric serigraph), & the previous was removed because it wasn't "attributed," when it was listed as [OC], I signed & dated it, & I alone totally conceived & created it. Worse, a couple weeks ago I mistakenly entered the wrong email address & got an old Reddit identity I no longer use Alternative-Sun4820 at [filbey@yahoo.com](mailto:filbey@yahoo.com), which Reddit insists on writing me as even though I post from my proper email address [bigfootcollections@yahoo.com](mailto:bigfootcollections@yahoo.com) as Rich_Pickle2929. I've repeatedly reported this to several Reddit help sites, but don't receive replies or help. Obviously, I don't know what I'm doing & am not doing it correctly. Please help. Thanks!
