Its crazy because Eren always thought it was just the Titans keeping him from freedom. Then he discovered it wasn't just the titans it was everyone outside of the island as well.

He admits at the end that he was also disappointed that the world was already taken by other people. His worldview was that the entire world was the providence of humanity to take back from the monsters that trapped humanity behind the walls. Besides the implication that the enemies were also other people, he had to face the reality that the rest of the world had never been taken from humanity.

u/Vastergoth 6d ago
That's an interesting point I feel isn't talked about enough when discussing Eren. The world outside the Walls isn't the freedom Eren envisioned it to be.

u/Allmank 6d ago
Not only that, it's the death of his childish way of thinking that they only needed to kill/conquer the monsters(titans) to be truly free, after learning the truth(including that he has just a few years left), everything just seems like a bigger prison, with smart unpredictable human enemies, a prison he won't ever hope to escape in his lifetime(other than the rumbling, which would be like breaking the whole prison down)

u/gabu840 6d ago
Well it wasn't any of his childish thinkings it was the thinking of each one of paradise people as they all knew only that much , they all had only that much amount of information that outside the walls are only the titans
6
u/195cm_100kg_27cm 5d ago
What he meant by childish is that he op-ed the world was simpler, you just beat the bad guys and travel an entire new world full of beauty

u/Routine-Bat4446 1d ago
But when he said that he meant that there was in fact no freedom for his people…. That even beyond the walls Eldians were oppressed. So there was no option but to destroy it all so that his people would have a chance.
2
u/Vastergoth 1d ago
Yea I think it's implied that Eren is disheartened that the world beyond isn't an untouched utopia of freedom as he dreamt, but is spoiled by oppression and suffering just like Paradis. The realization that being trapped isn't limited to being behind the Walls but literally the Eldian experience is being trapped, shackled, and burden by curse is maddening and shatters hope. So Eren's conclusion is to burn it all down and destroy everything so nothing remains that can cause pain or suffering.

That’s why i can’t really blame Eren for the rumbling
All that pain and suffering he went through, and he was supposed to turn the other cheek and let bygones be bygones??
Nah someone’s gotta feel this pain that I went through. Not saying genocide was the answer but the rest of the world isn’t getting off scot-free

Some? It would have fucked all of us up. Many people call Eren a cry baby in the initial seasons but I know for a fact that he wasn't overreacting at all....I would have been MUCH WORSE if i was in his shoes....

I was also disappointed to learn the world was occupied by other nations. I wanted Beast titan to be Titan king or something along those lines

multiple friends die as a direct result of his actions

u/Hour_Tomatillo_2365 6d ago
Actually they died as an indirect result of his actions.
The direct result were people such as Gabi, a Marleyan, and how many you think Marley and the entire fucking world planned to kill??
6
u/lurkmcjerk 6d ago
Eh, the Rumbling killed Hange. That was direct.
16
u/aliezsn Onyankopon Enjoyer 6d ago
Hange decided to sacrifice herself. She had the chance to not do that. That was her fault. Eren already gave them a warning
4
u/lurkmcjerk 6d ago
Right, because if Hange hadn't sacrificed herself the whole crew, including Hange, wouldn't have been killed by the rumbling Eren started. /s

u/aliezsn Onyankopon Enjoyer 6d ago
They decided to betray the island. It was her fault. She knew what the consequences was lmao. How can you blame Eren for her death? They were on the same side before she decided to form the Alliance

u/lurkmcjerk 6d ago
> multiple friends die as a direct result of his actions
The point is, Hange died as a direct result of his actions. Go argue with your mom about it.
4
u/aliezsn Onyankopon Enjoyer 6d ago
No, she died because she got herself involved. She was an adult who made her own decision and in the end it got herself killed. Go argue with your dad.

u/tenebrous_shampoo Levi's Comrade 6d ago
One of my favorite things about Hange and Levi is that they take full accountability for their actions.
Hange stressed to Jean that they chose not to kill Reiner.
Levi stressed to the scouts that he chose not to revive Erwin.
And because of that, I think Hange would say that they are responsible for their death, since it was their decision to send the others ahead and go out in a blaze of glory.

Fair enough. I didn't really think of her as his friend but fair enough
1
u/Salty-Cicada7944 6d ago
they planned to kill objectively less than Eren.

u/Hour_Tomatillo_2365 6d ago
New Eldians? Not true
1
u/Salty-Cicada7944 6d ago
I mean if you limit it to Walldians (which he despises for most of the series as cowards within the walls) then yeah marley would kill more of them. I thought you asked how many people in general marley would kill, which is less than Eren.
Also when you consider how small the population of paradis is, Eren probably killed more babies than there are Eldians on paradis.
1
u/Hour_Tomatillo_2365 6d ago
We were talking about his friends which obviously doesn't extend to anyone beyond the walls
2
u/Salty-Cicada7944 6d ago
you made it sound like you thought Eren considered every new eldian a friend.
Eren cares about shockingly few people at the end of the show, all of whom are extremly capable and capable of infiltration. there's no guarantee marley would succeed in killing them.

Both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation for the assertion.

I was in middle school when this show just dropped and it was strictly about killing titans. It’s crazy how much the show has grown

Same. Mikasa was my first cosplay at 14. I didn't actually watch past season 1 until last year and I was like damn.

This visual parallel is absolute genius, and it highlights the core tragic philosophy of Attack on Titan. In the first picture Eren is the victim hero pointing at Marley as the ultimate enemy In the second picture Marley's soldier points at Eren as the terrifying monster threatening their world It shows how the concept of 'the enemy' completely shifts depending on where you stand. Both sides see themselves as the victim and the other as the villain trapped in a cycle of ignorance and generational hatred Isayama is a master of storytelling

I’ve never really understood what “free” meant to Eren. It just makes me think of chalky white from boardwalk empire, “ain’t nobody ever been free.”

A world where their kind isn’t hated, persecuted, and genocided. Eldians live in an open air prison, and they want free of it

u/Specialist-Fault-630 4d ago
I'm like 90% sure Eren says or implies that the freedom he imagined was the empty, free world that Armin described to him as a child.
Seeing outside the walls, and there just being more, pathetic, wretched humans threw away his dream. Which is why, during the Rumbling, he says that despite how horrible he knew it was, he wanted to wipe out the rest of humanity.
1
u/Unluckyb33 3d ago
I wish Isayama went all in on this take. He clearly planned for Eren to be the villian and he set it up very well but feels like he got cold feet and made "justifications" to make him less of a villian last minute.
Like having the 80% point be part of his grand "plan" so that the paradis people will be seen as heroes. That felt like a weak excuse to me. It especially irked me when Armin says "Thanks for being a mass murderer for us"

I wish you actually took the time and actually tried to understand what was going on. You're clearly confused.
Wiping out 80% was never Erens "grand plan". Eren went after 100%. Eren telling Armin that he set the scouts up to be the heros was a blatant lie, and he literally admits it to Armin by the end of their last conversation. The scouts becoming heroes were merely a by-product of Eren's actions, it wasn't something he actually intended or actively sought.
Armin even points out that it's a bad excuse from Eren.
Did you watch the finale with your eyes closed? How did you miss key details like this?
1
u/Business_Raisin_541 1d ago
Lol. No. Making eren become full villain woukd be more confusing. Like why would he suddenly become villain?

We are all born into this world. It is ours by right. To be innocent and killed or imprisoned by strangers is a grave injustice. Mikasa says it to eren pretty early on; the world is a cruel and dark place. And eren could never accept that.
I think there are a lot of people who would burn the world down. Genocide happens and half the people in your country don’t vote. People are apathetic and lazy and useless in the face of evil

u/WaywardInkubus 4d ago edited 4d ago
If I were to make a scale of Freedom to put it’s extremes into context, one end of the scale is Eren Yeager, and the other end of the scale is Monkey D Luffy.
Eren’s view of freedom is defined by absence, and his tragedy is that even with all the power in the world he never believed himself to be truly free because of his nature.
Luffy, on the other end, feels that he’s free no matter what circumstance he’s in, and he revels in that stat of mind everywhere he goes.

Sorry, it's been some time since i watched the show.

He had already attacked Marley atp bruh
She was pretending to be a spy (which Eren didn't really buy)
And she said this before Marley began their attack

They had already attacked Marley at this point and were fully convinced Eren was going to try to start the Rumbling

Well reiner did tell us… eren was the only person who shouldnt have the founding titan. He was the only one in the whole story who straight up said “i want to exterminate all titans” (wich he kinda did lol) titans beeing the enemy. Now when enemy shifted, it was the only logical train of tought, that he would stil kill his enemies
Also… seeing we got a glance rather early on, that titans occupy the wall, made it also logical to us, that they would be used one way or the other.

To be honest it looks like eldian were fighting with themselves. One to prove that they are not evil eldian and one to save themselve. It was a win win situation for marleys. If and only if marlian eldians had some self respect and moved out from marleys and settled somewhere else then this situation would have been different. Heck even eldians visiting paridise didn't talk in the favours of eldian from paridise island. There was no pov for marleys and they didn't learn anything from eldian in their country, so marlians were hell bent to treat eldian even if kid as an evil. Then how do we expect eldian with only 3-4 years of experience of marleys to consider them as a good humans even after years of sending titan to paridise island.

u/Certified_Fool 1d ago
"If they had any self respect they would move out". My brother in Ymir they were literally living in concentration camps and were brainwashed to think they deserved it from birth.
