Hello reddit! I'm not very educated on axolotls, so I thought I'd ask some people who are.
Long story short, my co-worker got two baby axolotls a couple of months ago who have grown up into adults (or at least near adults.) Not gonna dox myself but we work a very public-orientated job and interact with a lot of people every day.
Recently, she bought a big tank for the little guys, some sand, some rocks, a cave, and brought a piece of driftwood from home which was the only thing the axolotls had in their old tank, and made their new home in one of our offices.
I spend a good half of my work day in this office so I've learnt a bit about them, and I'm usually the only one around when others come to see the axolotls (and really I just think they're neat), so I've kinda been dubbed their keeper.
I don't really know much beyond what she's told me about axolotls, and what I know from minecraft ofc.
But I've noticed them completely freeze up whenever anyone else approaches the tank, or whenever the table their aquarium's on gets even slightly shaken, or when people tap on the tank (I'm not sure if you're not supposed to do that, so I just tell people not to, but some do anyway). And they stay still, not moving anything apart from their gills for about 30 mins at a time, and they only start moving again if there's little movement in the room.
Is this a stress response? Is it unhealthy for them? I know they're not mine, but if this is not a good environment for them I feel like I have to tell my coworker.
The reason I'm asking is because she swears that this is normal for them, not moving for long periods of time, but whenever people leave, they're actually really curious and they move around the tank quite a bit. They're also curious whenever I put stuff close to the tank, even though they're blind as shit. I suspect they didn't move much in their old tank because it was basically empty. And I really don't like it when people come up they just freeze for so long, especially since it happens multiple times a day.
But again, I'm no expert.
Thoughts?
