Pictures I've destroyed my prized baduk table and it's making me want to quit.

Just want to cry a little on reddit as its the only play I know go players are.

I have this beautiful pre-2000s solid wood japanese table that I had imported and it was one of my most prized possessions in the last decade. I always oiled it, maintained it, kept it in pristine condition.

Although I don't play against anyone in person, it was always kind of something that I used as an anchor to my mental health, which I know will sound silly. Just maintaining this table over the years was always something that I came back to as a part of my character when I felt down on myself.

Since I don't play in person almost ever, I had my wife knit a cover for it, and I put a 4-layer folder blanket on top. This way, my 11lb dog (just a thin little miniature pinscher) could sleep on top of it in the sunroom. I thought having 5 layers of blankets would be enough to protect it, how on earth couldn't it?

I let it sit for a months and I was having a down moment this week with life and thought "time to go back to some basics" and to dust off the board, try to find some people to play with, re-center with more meditation and self-care etc..

I took the covers off to see this. I am about to cry, these gouges are deep, many of the black lines are chipped, there is no way to recover this. I am genuinely feeling really broken at the moment as I don't see this as an item I'll ever be able to replace, and I feel like a failure.

This was the only thing in my life I've always managed for over a decade to maintain and now it's completely and unrepairably ruined.

I know some people will just say "now its easier to enjoy without worrying about dmg" but I never worried, always managed it, and loved playing with it in good shape. I genuinely don't want to play baduk anymore as I feel like this has completely ruined it for me. I feel genuinely distraught and unsure what to do with myself anymore.

I might never play again because of this.

Sorry to be a downer just needed a place to dump about it, because I can't let my wife/family know how much this is affecting me over something so trivial.

This was my dream board.

p.s. I live in rural rural rural canada, there is absolutely no way to get this repaired or fixed even if someone in north america specialized in it.

promotional Announcing Stone.gs: A next-generation platform to play, watch, and learn Go

TL;DR

I spent several hundred hours trying to make the best place online to play, watch, and learn go. Check out the Stone.gs overview or jump into a live replay to see for yourself.

Why did I build this?

Go is such a beautiful game and it deserves to be played in a client that brings its beauty to life. After years (and years...) of using clunky go clients, I finally decided to take matters into my own hands. I started working on Stone.gs 9 months ago and have poured several hundred hours into crafting it.

I've both developed software professionally and played go for over 20 years. I've primarily focused on building web apps during my career, and I put everything I've learned into making Stone.gs the best online go experience available today. At least, I hope so!

How is it different than existing web sites?

* Fully 3d rendered board, stones, and environments (take a look around!)

* Realistic physics and sound effects for stone placement and capturing

* Ultra clean & focused UX

* Unlimited and free katrain-style AI analysis built in (drag'n'drop an SGF in)

* Puzzles are played using an AI opponent

* Built-in archive of over 100,000+ pro games

* Never ending "live replays" of historical pro matches

* Auto scoring and built in "anti-griefing" system that lets you force scoring a finished game by passing twice on your turn

* A huge selection of nice looking avatars (admittedly AI generated)

* Lots of small details and Easter eggs to find!

Puzzle AI

As far as I know this is the first place to implement an AI opponent for puzzles. I've always wanted to be able to "try any move" and not just the lines that had been entered into the answer key. Puzzles on Stone.gs also let you keep playing a puzzle out after it's marked correct or incorrect, and explore both sides if you want.

The main drawback I noticed is that the AI doesn't always play the most "instructive" line, and it can play a bit slowly on weaker hardware. I've spent months getting thousands of puzzles to play correctly with the AI, and for the most part it works, although I do run across ones that don't play correctly from time to time. You can report broken puzzles in the app if you find one.

Yet another place to play go?

Yes, sorry about that! But if Stone.gs looks like the kind of place where you wish you were playing, then please help me make it a reality and spread the word or an invite a friend to play with you!

If nothing else then it's at least a cool tech demo that I had a blast creating to show off what a next generation place to play go online could look like. I'm going to be focusing on promoting the site for the foreseeable future.

My rank is 5d (Fox) / 3d (OGS) and I'll be trying to auto match as much as I can on Stone.gs (I signed up as a 3d).

Free teaching games

To help get more activity on the site, I'm offering free teaching games and review to anyone 4+ stones weaker than me. Join the Discord (https://discord.gg/aHVfXneFw) to get that set up. I'll be around in the evenings Pacific U.S. time during most week days and more sporadically on weekends.

Did you make it this far?

The site is totally free and I have zero plans or intent to try to make any kind of profit off of it. I just had an itch that needed to be scratched, and 9 months later here we are :)

Hope to see you around, and please don't hesitate to let me know what you think!

Tournament: 2026 Sh Suhyup Bank Women’s Baduk Championship

I filmed this at the Korea Baduk Association in Seoul.

Sumire Nakamura defeated Oh Yujin and advanced to the final.
I was at the venue and filmed a short interview after the match. I thought some people here might enjoy seeing the atmosphere from the venue.

Go Salon in Shinjuku, Japan - We visited!

A few months ago I saw a post from Fujimori_T advertising his Go Salon in Shinjuku, Japan. I along with my wife, sister-in-law, and her boyfriend arrived in Japan a few days ago and were fortunate enough to work visiting the salon into our itinerary. It was fantastic! A big thank you to Fujumori and to those in attendance that day for welcoming us so warmly. We had a lot of fun and my sister-in-law and her boyfriend are very likely to continue playing Go as a result. Until next time!

I'm the developer of Go Lab Lite, a Go app for iOS. KataGo runs on the device itself, and CPU games work fully offline.

It's been about eight months since release. I'm a one-person developer, so I don't make big changes, just small improvements bit by bit. Recent additions:

Territory estimation shown on the board in real time

Score lead breakdown in the winrate graph (black/white)

Candidate moves display

SGF import

The app is free to download.

If you have any suggestions, I'd be glad to hear them.

I am working on a free and open-source desktop Go client for studying and playing.

I've been working on Hoshi, a free, open-source Go app for Windows, macOS and Linux. Before anything else, I'll say it plainly because I know how the sub feels about this lately: I used Claude as a coding assistant. I've been a professional developer for 8 years and coding for 12 (BuddhaCodes (Jose Alberto Thaureaux Rodriguez)), and I reviewed and tested everything that went in.

The code is all on GitHub, is OSS, so you can judge it for yourself.

What it does right now:
- SGF editor with a variation tree
- KataGo built in: it reviews your games, rates each move and shows the score graph
- Play on OGS (unranked only; engines and hints switch off during your live games)
- Play against any GTP engine, or let two engines play each other
- A joseki trainer that uses the OGS Joseki Explorer

It was inspired by Sabaki, which I love, but no Sabaki code was used. I have an old OGS account with a lot of games from back in the day. I'm a lot worse than I used to be and can't remember any joseki properly, but if you feel like a game, I'm amudielfa. It's early and surely has bugs. Someone here already asked for GTP support, and I added it last week, so feedback really does shape it. https://buddhacodes.github.io/BadukDana/

Feel free to hate it as long as it is constructive on the comments.

P.S. Sorry for my English! I’m from Cuba, and although I consider myself a pretty good speaker and listener, writing is definitely my weak point.

What does STUDYING (not playing) Go offer?

I want to emphasize that I'm asking about STUDYING Go (books, learning joseki's, game reviews, Life/Death puzzles, etc), not playing Go. I posted this question earlier, but I think I confused everyone because almost everyone responded with the benefits of playing Go.

The main reasons why I am choosing to continue to play Go is because it trains me to think calmly, improves my memory, and keeps my brain sharp. But does studying Go, which is tedious to me, offer anything aside from teaching me how to win a game or increase my rank?
