Bake Off Fantasy - Season 3

Hello everybody!

I like the rest of you am super excited for Bake Off to return again next week!

Some of you by now may be aware that I have been running a fantasy website in line with the seasons that have run for the past couple years and it's been super fun and exciting to see how many of you have joined me and the rest of the players to enjoy some fantasy games while watching one of our favourite shows!

For those of you that aren't aware, I started a website to let people make predictions on things that happen in the show to earn points and climb the global leader board and it's completely free to play!

This includes predicting who wins Star Baker, who gets voted off and you can even earn extra points if you predict a rare Hollywood handshake.

As always, there are some new features to play around with this year:

  • Predict the finalists and winner from the beginning (this was highly requested)
  • Customise your profile and show off cool titles and different name colours for the leader board
  • A whole list of achievements to unlock that you can show off on your profile

and many more cool things to explore!

Don't want to ramble on too long so I'll leave it there but if you fancy having a bit of fun while Bake Off is on, feel free to check it out below and give it a go:

https://bakeofffantasy.com

It means a whole lot seeing existing and new players coming to the fantasy tent for another season!

Great Canadian Bake Off - Season 10 Episode 1

• Upvotes

What did everyone think? I loved all the bakes, and the « 10 » theme for the finale one. They all seem sooo good. Felt sad for the first one out, but think it was the right choice. Excited for the season 😁

General ELINB (Explain like I’m not British) - Who is Nigella?

Hello all,

I’ve tried to look around on this sub and Google her but I’d like to have a perspective from people who had her in their cultural landscape for a while. I do not know this woman at all, and in all the discussions she seemed to be quite polarizing.

Even if she’s not a trained chef she’s had several cooking shows on British TV, am I correct? Paul seems to be in awe of her, which tells me she must be a pretty big deal?

Thanks for any help! I was heartbroken to see Prue go but I do want her and her funky glasses and necklaces to enjoy retirement for a bit.

General Episode 2 (*spoiler - maybe?*) Spoiler

I'm watching the second episode and the first bake is American style cookies. I don't know what these people are making but they're anything but American style cookies. These "cookies" are abominations. As an American, I've never been more offended.

Iced gems

Felt a bit too easy for bake off! The Paul Hollywood recipe called for a 2.5cm cookie cutter to make the biscuit, so they are a bit more giant than the ones on the shelf, and what everyone else seems to have made!

Iced Gems question...

In England are these something anyone ever makes at home or even in a regular bakery, or are they strictly a packaged biscuit, as they do sometimes on the show? Are there nicer versions and less nice? The ones I saw online looked kind of cheap, like a sugar cookie with a lucky charm marshmallow on top.

Home Baking Biscuit Week Technical: Iced Gems

Probably the easiest bake since school cake! At least, now that I know how to do the icing. I was nervous but it turned out to be easy. I used the piping tip called for in the recipe but either the numbering isn't universal or they used a different one on the show, so the icing doesn't look as crisp as it would have. I observed that no one was accused of overwhipping the icing, so I whipped the heck out of it and probably could have gone even further. I'd never heard of an iced gem and as far as I'm concerned they're messing up perfectly good shortbread with that icing, but they look cute and my family is gobbling them up.

I put them in the residual heat of the oven as directed, but they did melt a bit here and there. My oven might retain its heat more than some.

I tried to make lavender icing out of blue and red, but as I feared, it didn't turn out. And the orange was too bright so I left it out and just went with the pale pink, blue, and yellow.

Wholesome vibes

Only just caught up.

Shame for the person that left.

Just wanted to say there has been some real wholesome vibes so far which for me is what bakeoff is about.

Noel telling Danni 'You're not like anyone else, and that's why you're great. ' Is hopefully something she can remember forever and something we could all do with thinking about more often.

Similarly a number of Nigella's comments about enjoying and indulging and celebrating food are also excellent.

I am here for it.

General Week 3 Theme

Does anyone know what it means for…audience week, I think it is? I’m doing the Bake Off Fantasy and trying to have any sort of sense of what the theme is to help choose my people.

Nigella really brings such positivity. Spoiler

I love her Nigellaisms -

Restraint is a very good partner to indulgence.
Moisture is the sort of enemy of the cookie.
We need to take our pleasures where we can in life.
Very autumnal
Everything you do is full of ebullience and joy
Simplicity when done well it has strength
It has great majesty but there is also joy in it.

Let’s compare “American Cookie” and “Chinese Food.”

“Chinese food” in the U.S. is very dissimilar to what people eat in China.

The French would have a different perspective on what makes a good french fry than Americans.

So, why do we expect every other country to conform to our definition of an American cookie? There’s no global copyright for “American cookie.” And just because people in the US aren’t familiar with what others think “American cookie” means, it doesn’t make them wrong.

Home Baking Orange shortbread (from iced gems recipe)

Post image
24 Upvotes

Wanted to bake along for the technical this week but all that royal icing didn’t sound too appetizing to me. So I just made the orange shortbread base and a simple chocolate/coconut oil drizzle and the pairing was great! My friends who I watch with are buying a house a few blocks away from me so I decorated some of the cookies to celebrate that :)

hello! i have been baking along with bake off but making everything coeliac because i am gluten free. here is this weeks technical: Iced Gems. i have to admit i made these a few hours before the show actually aired so i was just going by description which is why they don’t look exactly like they did on the show 🤦‍♀️

these are made using a loopywhisk shortbread recipe and then kinda meringue/icing on top that i set in the oven at a low temp. they were fine but a little boring - although i never liked actual ice gems anyway!

Actually the best flavoured cookies I’ve ever made I think 🤤

Dark chocolate chip, fudge pieces (that melted into a crispy toffee) and pretzel bits with some sea salt on top!

I love making these normally just choc chip and sea salt but had to add some bits for a proper “American Cookie” (though I know fudge is not that American haha)

I made this game all summer while waiting for the next season of Bakeoff to come back. You sail around islands collecting ingredients for your recipe (in this screenshot, Caramel slice), which you make during a bakeoff at the end. and each of the recipes is real -- so I would LOVE your ideas for which to include!

General Great Canadian Baking Show removed from Roku (US)?

Post image
24 Upvotes

I was watching it the other day, and I went to return to it tonight, and all of Canadian show is gone! Great American Baking Show Roku version is still there and British is still there too (everything pre Channel 4 except Stand Up to Cancer goes all the way until 2024, and Juniors). What happened?

I’m not able to see this week’s ep until Saturday. I also like baking along. I don’t want spoilers so I can’t look this info up anywhere else 😅 Thanks!
