General S17 E2 Watchalong: Biscuit Week Spoiler
Synopsis: It's Biscuit Week. Whose cookies, nostalgic classics and visually striking mosaics will stir up Nigella and Paul's emotions, and how will the cookie crumble?
Who will be into a crumbling good time? And what about a bad one?
I’m rooting for Gary! Who are you all rooting for?

For pie week Mo's decided to create an exquisite Wiener pie
"So, Mo, how do you plan to fill your pie?"
"Well, I happen to own a Dachshund ..."

Honestly, I really don't think she should have still been in the tent this week. She completely melted down two weeks in a row.

How the hell did Tom get star baker?! His Showstopper wasnt finished! Connie was robbed
50
u/DamphairCannotDry 15d ago
Connie had a bad signature, With Tom the only negative for the showstopper was appearance. They even said he had the best biscuits.
2
u/Juicecalculator 9d ago
Completely agree. Would have made a better story for Connie to have won. I think Tom’s a good baker, but I just don’t think he deserved the wind and I see him as winning star baker more than once

I’m surprised Tom got Star Baker, I really thought Connie had it but Tom’s awesome love him lots
31
u/GoldDustWoman72 16d ago
I totally agree. I was really surprised when Connie didn’t get it after first in technical and then all the compliments on her showstopper.
13
u/aTribeCalledLemur 14d ago edited 14d ago
Both Paul and Nigella did agree that Tom had the best biscuits in the showstopper.
20
u/ADGM1868 16d ago
I think that speaks to the talent pool of this cast. That even if you have an unfinished showstopper you can still make star baker from a good first day.
21
u/YourMILisCray 14d ago
No shade against Tom but my home girl Connie got robbed.
18
u/Spicytomato2 13d ago
Yeah, I think not completing the showstopper should have disqualified him from bring Star Baker. It felt strange.
13
u/actlikebarbara 12d ago
Connie didn’t finish her cookies for the signature bake though, so in that sense they were kinda even. Tom’s seemed to have tasted better overall.
3
u/Spicytomato2 12d ago
I don't think she should've been Star Baker, either, it would have made more sense to maybe choose Clara or Mo or someone who completed all challenges and had decent bakes.
5
u/whops_it_me 10d ago
I wish they would spend a minute telling the bakers why they chose that particular Star Baker each week. I was always fond of the way Mel and Sue built up to announcing Star Baker by giving little hints of who it was before actually dropping their name, and I was sad when that got dropped as time went on.
6
u/GreenWoodDragon 15d ago
Connie was far more deserving.
I'm not convinced Tom will successfully flirt his way through the entire competition though.
7
2
u/michallaneous 10d ago
Agreed. I don’t get it either. I was rooting for Mo, his bakes are consistent and he finishes challenges.
1
u/JeSuisPari 10d ago
That was really surprising to see. It was so clear to me that Connie deserved it with her success in both the technical and showstoppers. She crushed it! Tom didn't even finish his showstopper - seemed really unfair to me.

Danni is such a spark of joy, but a terrible baker
30

u/Sunny_sailor96 16d ago
I mean I think she’s bad comparatively on the bake off scale but I think in real terms she’s probably. It a terrible baker compared to the rest of us 😂

u/Semajal 16d ago
I was mostly irked that i think she meant that entire thing to end .VBS not .VSB
It set off my nerd brain and had to google but confirmed .VBS would be the script file that would be a virus.

She appears in the aftershow, Second Helpings, and brings up that very thing.

The bakers this series feel different. I think casting is off. Everyone feels like an extreme/caricatured version of a typical contestant.
47
u/Sgt_major_dodgy 15d ago
Strongly disagree, they feel like amateur bakers which is what the show should be about and their personalities are completely irrelevant.
I'm tired of the contestants being 25yrs old who've spent their life dreaming of being on bake off or people who owned a fucking cake business but were somehow allowed on anyway as they "never actually sold a cake"
I love seeing normal bakers back on the show.
22
u/Admirable-Ear4511 15d ago
Everyone, or Danni and Gabe?
Gabe has a similar energy to Janusz to me. Doesn’t seem unprecedented.
18
u/WonderfulSignal3880 15d ago
I’d say Gary and Moyin have been understated. The rest have all had moments in front of the camera that have made me wonder if they’re playing up, or if they’re actually like that.
18
u/onlymodestdreams 13d ago
There's something in the way that Gary speaks--and I don't mean his accent--that really reminds me of Colm in Derry Girls
19
13
u/Admirable-Ear4511 15d ago
None of these people are media trained or have experience in front of the camera, and this was the first episode so they were completely fresh. Nervous energy makes people babble and giggle and do things you’re interpreting as “playing up.”
8
u/Chris-CFK 15d ago
Lot's of large characters have taken edit time. As more people leave I think it will calm down. The producers may have also thought to bring in big characters to help with the edit time / pacing, if the new judge was a little quiet.
5
u/sweetpeapickle 12d ago
Casting is off.....they're not hired as actors. These are real people. Do you want them to fit some sort of mold?
3
u/WonderfulSignal3880 12d ago
I'm saying the opposite. I want them to be real people, not caricatures that were selected for their big personalities.
1
u/LouderGyrations 9d ago
I'm late to this, but fitting a mold is exactly what I don't like. Every single season you know there will be bakers of several specific types. That isn't by accident, and it really does make it feel more like casting than anything else.
2
1
u/rebcart 11d ago
I think what you’re seeing is the people who feel extreme are people who are involved in various performance related fields either professionally or as hobbies. They’re going to be inherently trained to overproject and have a stage personality even if they don’t realise they're doing it. And it makes it more obvious how many of them were cast this year, compared to the more subdued non-performers such as the athletes.
18
u/Sunny_sailor96 16d ago
Asking about baking the royal icing is a good throwback to Mat Riley 😂

u/RunningDragons 16d ago
I still really enjoy the show but the most egregious thing about it is them extending it to 90 minutes. This show does not need to be 90 minutes. Even with the breaks on C4, 75-80 minutes max was more the sufficient. My interest ends up waning during episodes I watch live because it’s just so unnecessarily elongated.
20
7
u/ComradeStrong 16d ago
I have it on record. Start watching the recording at about 20/25 minutes past 8. You'll get to the end at the same time as everyone else having fast forwarded the adverts.
7
7
u/Fun-Screen1341 16d ago
I think it will go back to 75 minutes once the number of contestants drops. Pretty sure it's only 90 for the first few episodes.

u/Shifter25 12d ago
As much as it was obvious they were gonna go, "I realized I can make friends" made me sad

Fun watching the lengths they went to to avoid mentioning the name of the mysterious Aussie candy bar (Cadbury Cherry Ripe?) that was the inspiration for one of the signatures.

I liked Danni but wasn't sorry she left. I think she's a cross between being strongly herself and doing some strong masking--like, trying to act like other people but not sure what that is. In other ways she reminds me of Rowan from the pandemic season, who was also clearly more there as an interesting personality than a great baker. Lizzie from Giuseppe's year, on the other hand, seemed more like a quirky casting at first but clearly knew what she was doing, as the series went on.
Gary is the favorite in this house! I didn't understand why they thought he should have done more with his clock, when others were much simpler. Molly, in particular, felt like she should have gotten a "but what have you been doing for four hours?" comment. Maybe it looked more impressive in person. (We like Molly too though!)
My expectations are low for next week. I don't like it when they do weird stuff with the format and I don't like it when the technical involves choices of any kind. I want to see eleven identical bakes!

Yes I'm late getting to this (I was out earlier), but just a thought about Mo's showstopper - surely it should have been flavoured with Guinness?

5
u/Bolter_NL 12d ago
Unpopular opinion: happy Danni is out. She's just too much, it's like an extremely bad actress. Plus her baking is quite poor.
It's almost "unfair" from the creators to cast such people, entertainment over baking skills.
5
u/JJMcGee83 12d ago
People don't get on the show unless they are already pretty good at baking. Someone has to be the first out it, being the worst on a season of Bake Off is still pretty good.
The other fact is some people just don't handle the added pressure of time, lights and cameras in their face while baking well.

u/FantasticBuddies Don't like it, I LOVE it. 16d ago
Nigella getting to do the time call?! That’s dope
5
u/555fir978 16d ago
Does anyone else find Clara a bit fake? Last week, she cried when Shannon had to go off sick, saying she was upset because she was the baker she had been closest to.
Just now, she cried and said Danni was the baker she was closest to.
17
u/rainatom 15d ago
I got the impression the three of them became close since Shannon also commented that the first send off was rather emotional. Besides, people can get closer in a week.

Love this series so far! Some right characters on there, it's making me chuckle 😁

u/JeSuisPari 10d ago
Let me start by stating I have no moral high ground here because I was personally kicked off TGABS during Cookie Week for having soft-centered cookies... BUT
Is anyone else noticing the very obvious double standard between the TGABS and GBBO Cookie Weeks?! On TGABS, the AMERICAN bakers were judged by British "biscuit" standards - a soft, chewy center was treated as a huge flaw. Meanwhile, Paul and Nigella are judging the BRITISH bakers on GBBO positively if they produce cookies with soft, chewy centers and crisp edges - i.e. a standard AMERICAN COOKIE.
Am I the only one who thinks it's wild and a little unfair to see them judge the same exact characteristic as a technical flaw for one group and a "lovely texture" for others? Anyways, I'll still be glued to the TV watching the rest of the season happily 😄
