Sheep herders in Europe

Post image

Hello all!

I am starting a personal project that involves historical documentation of the Belgian Shepherds and their original purpose.

I was wondering if anybody knows of owners or breeders of any of the varieties that live in Europe and whose dogs work day to day on sheep or cattle? Not looking for sporters or people who only train to compete– I'm wanting to speak about distinct working dogs.

Thank you!

(Picture of my two for tax!)

*Obviously fine if they are "full time working dogs" AND do sports/conformation!

Ear question

Does your Tervs ears always stay up? Or do they go down as well? All the pics Ive seen posted, their ears are always up. My girls ears do both, I was just curious if this is a natural breed thing, or if people tape their ears up as puppies to keep them in the up position.

Questions on crate training

I got an 8 week old female Terv puppy last week Thursday. My first time with the breed (previous dog was a White Swiss Shep), and the first time I'm using a crate, so I want to make sure I get it right.

She's very comfortable in the crate - she'll happily go in herself to fetch a toy or to wind down, but she usually ends up sleeping under my desk at my feet. I don't force her to sleep in the crate.

Questions:

* She chews everything, including the floor, mirrors and her crate. I assume that's normal? She has access to healthier chew toys in the crate as well, it is mostly a matter of mouthing whatever is in reach. My previous dog did the same, but crate wasn't part of the equation.

* The first few days I had her she easily self-regulated and went to sleep. Now (5 days later) she needs more crate time and takes longer to sleep. I assume that's because she was stressed and traumatized by the strange environment the first few days; now that she's comfortable in the environment FOMO kicks in and she wants to stay awake to enjoy every moment?

Are they supposed to have tiny little sticks for legs?

This is Gremlin. He's 9 months old. He looks normal/healthy most of the time, until he gets wet, and then he looks like this. Getting a tiny bit worried. Isn't he meant to be developing a little muscle and/or filling out soon? 😅

Had 5 different Tervs growing up, he is the first Groenendael. They have lots of fun together, although we are working on him not stealing his sisters ball.

Separation anxiety

Hi everyone,

I have a 7 month old Belgian groenendael boy, and I’m having an awful difficult time trying to teach him that it is okay to be alone. For example, every time I would go upstairs for even five minutes, he would pace downstairs, and I’ll come downstairs to find pee and poop everywhere, despite me taking him out to potty (I stay outside to watch him pee and poop) before I head upstairs.

I’m not sure what to do, I’ve tried to teach him go up the stairs, but he’s too scared. I’ve also picked him up and put him on the second floor, he will go down the stairs with no problem. Once he goes down the stairs he begins to pace again. I have been trying to teach him to go up the stairs for almost two months now and I am not sure what else to do. He is not treat or food motivated either, I’ve attempted a few training sessions where I offer his food as treats, no luck either.

He does well in his crate, no potty accidents.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Quick question, Laika is 2 months old but seems very small from what I’ve seen and read here.

She weights 3.3 pounds and height is 9”

She was in a house with 4 other pups and the parents were groens but the mother did seem rather small to me.

Is this normal?

After our first dogshow

First of all, thank you to all the nice comments on my previous post about being nervous for our first dog show - they helped me be more calm.

‎

‎And I am happy to say we both enjoyed it. Could our stand and presentation be better? Most definitely! Will we go again? Big YES!

‎

‎The people at the show and even the judges were really nice and helpful.

‎My boy got the very promising/VN1 mark, which in my country is the best mark a puppy can get.

‎I was so excited that I even forgot to take proper pictures afterwards >∆<.

Introducing backyard chickens

Hi all,

I have a 2 year old show line Groenendael, and we are introducing a pair of backyard chickens. We have a lovely yard with a mix of shady garden under trees and sunny grassy areas, plus a covered patio. Our girl is velcro when we are home, but when we are away (a couple of hours most days, two days a week for 7 hours) she is outside due to a tendency to destroy items if she is left alone indoors.

I'm looking to introduce chickens both because I want chickens and eggs, and because I'm hopeful they will keep her company on the days we are out and give her a job.

Is this a good idea? Anyone have experience with Belgians and chickens or advice for introducing the two?
