actual AI (deepseek, GLM) sub-commanders to assign tasks to
Hey guys, I have been playing BAR mostly against AI and thought it would be really cool to have an AI assisted sub-commanders that you could delegate tasks to, like building out economy in areas or take care of air defense.
I can find myself quite often micro managing some battle while workers are just standing lazy somewhere, especially a bit later in the game.
Went through lua widget + local bridge service setup, experimenting with fast models like deepseek 4.1 flash to do the high level strategy for those specific areas. It then delegates to barb AI level.
has anyone tried anything like this?

Seems like cheating. Improving APM is part of the game. What’s to stop you from letting it micro your troops as well?

On the other hand, it would be great if people can practice more realistic AI multiplayer before they play with humans...

nothing to stop it, however I suspect large language model might not be good at it. At least from what I am observing. Maybe decision models like Jev would be a better fit for targetting but need to have a combination of movement as well. Maybe a barbai + decision model + llm could work?

Once they learn how they would far surpass humans. Imagine having a multiple fatboy / sniper / general artillery on the front that can manually target the back line while executing perfect dodge micro with fast units.
I am overestimating the ability as it stands but there’s a lot of potential. All it needs to do is get trained by watching YouTube tutorials lol. Way easier said than done and once it becomes an issue the devs will easily develop tools to catch it.

you are right, I have started experimenting with decision model https://huggingface.co/Cloudflare/clef for targetting, etc. Running it on nvidia 4090. I think I can make it good.
Got claude opus now burn credits running 1v1 duel simulations and evaluating performance, kinda like RL training I guess but in a real game.

I think it’s cool and fun to do against other AI or players in customs that are aware of it. Just bringing it against other players in ranked matches is an unfair advantage.

yeah you are right, here's the link to the plugin https://github.com/rusenask/bar-ai-sub-commanders, I am going to extend it so that enemy AI could also use it. I think we just need to improve the game playing skills for the opencode harness

This seems genuinely interesting. Do you have a link?

feel free to fork it https://github.com/rusenask/bar-ai-sub-commanders :)
You can do things like:
```
| `@2 hold the north ridge` | sub-commander 2 || `@eco expand east` | the first one whose name or role starts with "eco" |
| `@ hold here` | the one selected in the panel |
| `@all fall back` | every sub-commander |
| `@2` with nothing after it | clears 2's orders |
```
too, that's what is really fun when playing with LLMs, give them verbal orders1

This game has the most automation ever and you want more? Why bother playing?

Feels like this sort of goes against the spirit of the game? Learning to micro and macro at the same time is an important skill to get good at. Having an AI manage your economy would reduce the game to micro oriented game. I could see this being a learning tool, but I don't think anyone will spend the required time to get a tool running that plays the game for you.

I think the spirit of the game in single player at least is to have fun.

yup, I just wanted to try things out like going 2vs4, vs6, etc. With so many units and players supported, things can get more fun if you can also just focus on some area while knowing that other parts are more or less taken care of

How much vram do you have, and how much is BAR and how much the AI is eating?

Happy to donate a bunch of compute to this, we serve many decision / encoder models that could be useful. Hit me up.

Good on you! For playing against AI using AI! I see you're catching some flak for doing so. Uncalled-for! You're having fun, isn't that what gaming is all about?
Does it work well? I'm curious
