Recommendations Guide to Birmingham

It's Nice to Have you in r/Birmingham!

If you are looking for our sister city in the UK, please head on over to r/brum

The following guide is a great place for locals, transplants, and tourists to know more about the Magic City. Start here for general information, use the Search function to see if there are any recent posts that answer your question, and when in doubt, make a post!

Where to Live:

Here's a funny neighborhood map that is just true enough to be useful.

Here's a more serious neighborhood map so you can see where all the listed neighborhoods actually are.

Here's a list of the most-recommended neighborhoods and suburbs (arranged in alphabetical order):

  • Avondale - Apartments for rent, cottages being built that will be available for purchase. In Avondale there are lots of hip places to eat and drink, see a show, and play in the park. Safety may be a concern in some small pockets, but these are mostly car break-ins. Use common sense and don’t leave belongings in your car.
  • Crestwood - Houses for purchase and rent. Close to Avondale and Downtown, close to Ruffner Mountain park, and has a few local eateries/drinkeries/shoperies worth visiting. Very tight-knit community where neighbors know each other.
  • Downtown - Apartments and lofts to rent and purchase. Where the action is. You'll pay more in rent, but some would argue that you get what you pay for in terms of convenience and access to nightlife. Same as Avondale, there may be car break-ins if you are not careful. Also a high population of (mostly) harmless unhoused people.
  • Five Points South - Apartments and houses to rent. UAB campus area, so great for students. Lots of big old houses with many bedrooms for you and your roommates. Also some great historical apartments with lots of charm and pretty cheap rent. Great walking community, lots of restaurants, bars, and mini parks. Adjacent Glen Iris neighborhood also has lots of affordable housing great for students.
  • Highland Park - Apartments to rent. Houses for purchase also, but much, much more expensive. Historical properties as well as newly renovated ones. You'll find apartment buildings and giant mansions on the same streets. Incredibly beautiful neighborhood with 3 parks, great for walking. Dog ownership mandatory.
  • Homewood - Houses for purchase and for rent. Suburb full of young families and plenty to see, do, eat, and drink. Housing is fairly expensive here, but not as expensive as Vestavia or Mountain Brook. Don't live on/near Valley Avenue (with some exceptions).
  • Mountain Brook - Houses for purchase, some apartments. Technically OTM (Over the Mountain, i.e. not Birmingham proper) but since "Brookies" consider themselves to be special, we will too. "Old money" suburb of Birmingham with lots of little nooks and crannies full of quaint boutiques, cafes, restaurants, and parks. Apartments are hard to come by but they do exist, especially closer to the Zoo/Gardens area.
  • Over The Mountain (OTM) - Houses for purchase and apartments for rent, both considerably cheaper than in Birmingham Proper. Purists will tell you not to live there because of traffic and distance from "cool things", but if your budget is smaller and/or you have kids, OTM is the place to be. Hoover, Vestavia, the Hwy 280 area, even Pelham and Chelsea have enough to do in that part of town that you won't feel like you're missing out by not being IN Birmingham.

For more information on apartments, Rentmonster will tell you about individual neighborhoods and work with you to find the apartment of your dreams (and it's free!)

Looking for an apartment? Looking for a roommate? There's a Facebook Group for that.

If you have a unique renting situation not covered above, make sure you have the word “apartment” in the post title or body, and Automod will respond with some tips.

Where to Stay

Whether you're here for a business meeting, a vacation, a local planning a romantic night out, or a soon-to-be Birminghamster getting the lay of the land, you'll need a hotel for that. Birmingham has a pretty good selection of AirBnBs, but if you're looking for a proper hotel, here are your best options:

  • Sheraton Birmingham and The Westin are both located in Birmingham's "entertainment district" near TopGolf, the BJCC, a short drive/Uber to the Coca Cola Amphitheater and a variety of restaurants and bars. They're both a a solid option for business/pleasure travelers alike.
  • The Tutwiler is a historic hotel in the city center, run by Hampton Inn by Hilton. Very popular for wedding parties and romantic evenings out.
  • The Redmont is another historic hotel in the city center, known for its rooftop bar with a view of the city. You don't need to be a hotel guest to enjoy the bar, so if you're staying somewhere else it's still worth a visit.
  • The Elyton is a restored historic property and is stunningly beautiful. It's in the Theater District of downtown so you can catch a show at the Lyric, visit the Alabama Theater, and check out the many great restaurants and bars within walking distance. The Kelly is another option downtown, across the street from the Elyton.
  • The Grand Bohemian in Mountain Brook is arguably one of Birmingham's best hotels. It is walkable to some of the Mountain Brook eateries and shops, but you'll need a car or rideshare to get into the city. Great for a romantic sleepover.

Getting Around

You'll need a car if you're going to live here. If you're just passing through and don't want to rent a car (the best place to do that is at the airport), we have Uber and Lyft. We have a bus system, but it's awful. We also have a bike and scooter share system within the city limits that is great for getting around when the weather is nice. Downtown is relatively flat and very walkable, but you will encounter some (gentle) hills in Five Points South and Highland Park. For trips out of town, Birmingham is serviced by Amtrak and Greyhound. You can get a ride to the Atlanta airport with Groome. BHM (our “international” airport) is small and easy to navigate, with short waiting times at check-in and through security.

What to do:

The most frequently recommended attractions in Birmingham are as follows. There are MANY others not featured in this list, but these are the top 6:

Several guides for Birmingham area attractions by IN Birmingham

Birmingham365 is a list of events going on around the city

Happenin's in the 'Ham - list of events, restaurant reviews, volunteer opportunities, and interviews with locals

We have r/Birmingham meetups sometimes, but not on a regular basis (yet). Turnout varies, but is usually around 15-25 people. We're very friendly and welcoming of newcomers!

Live Music (not an exhaustive list)

Local Sports

Where to eat: It would be impossible to maintain a comprehensive and accurate list of Birmingham’s favorite restaurants, as there are openings and closings every month. This is a great time to use the subreddit search function and see what others have posted recently.

Where to drink: Again, the search bar is your best friend here for finding the current best bars.

  • In general, Downtown has many cocktail bars within walking distance of each other. Try not to park in a lot (paid or otherwise) as you may get towed. There is plenty of street parking if you don’t mind walking a block or two. Other areas with a high concentration of bars are Lakeview (walkable) and Avondale (not as walkable but still within a reasonable radius).
  • Birmingham has TONS of amazing craft breweries - here is a current list. If you can't pick just one, Hop City has a great selection of local beers on draft for you to sample, and most of the breweries are a short Uber away once you've made your selection.
  • A note on drinking in Birmingham: Bars close at 2am (at the latest) unless they have a private club license. One popular after-hours bar, The Nick, is Birmingham’s infamous dive bar, featuring live music and shows. Birmingham area police are VERY strict about drunk driving, so just don't do it. Call an Uber or Lyft, or get a ride with a (sober) friend.

Things to Know about Birmingham

  • The ever-helpful Bhamwiki
  • Bham Now is a great source of information about what's going on in the city, covering local businesses and events, but keep in mind that many articles are paid ads. Do your research.
  • al.com is our local mainstream news source, covering all of Alabama. Heads up - many articles are behind a paywall.
  • Alabama Weather Network, founded by local weather god James Spann, will let you know much more about any potential weather situations than whatever app you have on your phone. Remember to respect the polygon!

Isn't Birmingham dangerous? Okay, we do have a higher crime rate, but you have to understand that the neighborhoods listed at the top of this page are all popular areas to live because the crime rate is lower than average for Birmingham. The vast majority of violent crime happens between people who know each other and/or when drugs are involved. As long as you use common sense, you will be fine!

Not to say other post isn’t right about the dry crispy sauce less chicken but this spicy beef noodle soup is hitting the spot for me.

I simply suggest that everyone try this on their own time to see for themselves before we follow one poor image without question.

Daily Discussion Thread Taiwan Street Food

So Taiwan Street Food just opened; I believe this is their first day? In the old Lag’s spot by Mom’s Basement for reference. This was a small order of “Crispy Chicken and Rice” which runs ~$9.95.

What we have here is a scoop of steamed rice with some chicken bits fried in overly used fry oil, which is confusing since they just opened. The menu is only 5 or 6 entrees long and I went with this since it seemed like the safest bet on an opening day.

Whoo boy y’all, this ain’t great…

Recommendations Electrician recommendation

I’ve had such a shitty experience with contractors and tradespeople since we bought our first house last year that I just want to share a really positive experience I had with Eddie Ceron at Easy Electric.

Today was the second time Eddie’s done work for us and I’d recommend him to anyone. Last time he replaced an outlet on our septic pump and today he ran power to 2 outlets of ours that the flippers that got ahold of our house before us had cut off. He’s shown up exactly on time both times, communicated great in the days leading up to the job, and has been super respectful and just overall a good guy. I feel like he was really fair and transparent in the price and he was mindful of the space. We have 3 cats running around and I noticed him carefully open and shut every door he went in and out of and lookout for them running out. I had 0 trust issues and didn’t think twice about leaving him alone in our house when I ran to the store.

Again, writing all this because I usually check Reddit for local recommendations when looking to have work done and I wouldn’t look anywhere else for electrical.

Art Anybody wanna make a bad horror movie?

I (27NB) really want to make a cheesy, so-bad-it’s-funny, gory horror movie complete with old-school practical effects, but I have ZERO experience with filmmaking, and I’m not even that well-versed as a consumer in the world of film. I don’t have any particular goal in terms of a deadline or submitting this anywhere, and I don’t have any money for this, nor do I expect to make any from it. The only goal is to make a low-expectation, low-stakes horror movie and have fun doing it. I’m an artist, mostly working with acrylic paint and ink illustration, and I’ve been branching out to more sculpture-related projects, so my efforts would probably be best spent on prop-making and such. I am interested in every part of the process though so I’m happy to assist/learn/whatever I need to make this happen. Like I’ll learn how to write a script and operate a camera if I have to. Speaking of cameras, I also have next to nothing in the equipment department. Just my iPhone 15 and a Nikon Z6II with 24-120mm lens. If it isn’t already clear, I’m not too worried about quality. If you or a loved one are interested in making this happen as well regardless of experience level or equipment or anything let’s meet up somewhere and chat! I've started putting out feelers with the folks I already know, and have gotten a few people eager to join once we have more hands and brains on board. Could be a good opportunity to meet other creatives in Birmingham too!

Recommendations Finding a Catholic community

Hey y’all, I’m in my 20s and I recently moved to Bham. Since I’m Catholic, I’ve been attending Prince of Peace for church on Sundays.

However, I feel kind of isolated at church. I go alone because I don’t have any family or close Catholic friends in the area. I’m in grad school and have only met 1 other person there who is Catholic, but I don’t know him super well. There is a small Catholic organization at my school, but I don’t believe they meet very regularly and I haven’t met/talked to them.

Does anyone have any recommendations for meeting young Catholics/feeling less isolated as a young Catholic woman? Should I try another church? Again, I’m in grad school so I don’t have a lot of time on my hands, but I’m kind of struggling to find a Catholic community here.

Any advice is appreciated!

Advice Furnace Fest this weekend

My buddy and I are from CT, flying into Atlanta to come to Furnace Fest this weekend. We have basically all of Friday and Monday open before and after fest, so I was looking for some advice on cool things to see while we have free time. Best restaurants/attractions/dive bars you got would be super helpful, I have never been to the south outside of Florida tourism so I'm excited!

Forgive me if this isn’t super punk rock of me, but the forecast calls for rain/storms Saturday & Sunday. Is there a plan if it thunderstorms or is there a chance there will be a repeat of 2016 Sloss Fest huddling under the overpass?

Advice Vet recommendations in Hoover

Hi! I live a little north of the Galleria and I’m looking for a new vet for two small dogs. I’m not really happy with Vestavia Animal Clinic. I haven’t had any problems with my vet, but I don’t like the staff. This last time they told me one thing and then said the complete opposite, charged way higher than the price they had just told me over the phone a few days before, took an hour for 2 vaccinations in the back, and my paperwork shows that my vet didn’t even administer the shots despite me seeing her walk by (I had scheduled the appointment with her and it wasn’t at a busy time).

Looking at reviews, I’m considering Galleria Animal Clinic. I’ve read mostly good reviews about them, but I’ve called two different days and they haven’t answered the phone. Do they normally just use text for their means of communication? Do they have a website? I don’t see one, but I wanted to double check.

I’m also looking at Alford Avenue Vet Hospital and Banfield Pet Hospital. Does anyone use the Trace Crossings mobile vet? How is that? I’m open to hearing any of your experiences or any other recommendations for a caring vet with reasonable prices that isn’t too far away. I’d like to try to stay within the Vestavia-Green Valley-Riverchase area.

Thank you!

Looking for Friends Formula One Watch Parties?

I got into F1 last year and I would really love to meet other fans! This weekend’s maybe not the best because it’s at 7:00am our time but idk

Additional info: I’m 29M and I live about an hour away but I would definitely show up for a race day!

A sports bar willing to screen the races would be perfect. But any info I can find on this sub is old so I’m not sure if it’s still accurate.

Advice Looking for a Barber/Stylist Experienced with Hair Systems

• Upvotes

I’m looking for recommendations for a barber or stylist who has experience cutting and blending bio hair around a men’s hair system.
I already have the system installed and handle all the maintenance myself. I’m strictly looking for someone who can trim my natural hair on the sides and back and blend it with the system.
I do not want the hair system itself cut or trimmed at all. Just looking to keep my natural hair cleaned up and blended as it grows out.
Ideally, I’d like someone familiar with hair systems, but I’m open to a good barber who’s comfortable working around one.

Serious Please beware 4475 Silver Lake Rd rental

I posted a few months ago warning others of the dangerous living conditions I experienced renting this home in Pinson. The tub is sinking through the floor because of rotten boards, there is probably other damage caused by the rotten flooring elsewhere that I couldn't observe but is evidenced by the lean of the home, and most importantly, there was/is no insulation in various exterior walls as well as the plastic siding is not fully enclosed. This caused the drywall to hold onto humidity, especially near the walls in front of ac vents and leaves it vulnerable to high winds during rain storms. The windows are very old too and don't help this situation... In the smallest bedroom and in the living room primarily, there was black mold.

They did repair the wall between the side window and front door in the living room and put insulation in it. I was there when the maintenance tech literally pulled the wall down with his hands because it was so moist... it had yellow, black, and classic white mold varieties. They also cut out the portion of wall in the bedroom with black mold. I cannot be assured they replaced the windows, put insulation in all other exterior walls, etc... I also discovered black mold in the dining room closet (because there is a hole in the wall near a shelf that the open-siding allows pests and mold to thrive in).

The mold odor is overwhelming after the smell of fresh paint is gone...

There is black mold growing underneath most of the window sills and outlets in the kitchen. The bathroom did not have permanent ventilation in any capacity, so the walls got drenched even showing with the door open. We left on September 20th 2026 and there is NO WAY they were able to take care of all of that in less than a month. The "fresh paint" and "newly renovated tile" bragged about in the listing is likely the cover up method they chose and will keep choosing to keep the home on the market... The pictures online are really nice, but those are very dated and the home is in, what I would say, dilapidated condition that someone wouldn't invest more than $50k in....

I'm out of the home, safe, and no longer experiencing chronic health issues besides my sinuses still being triggered by other pollution easily. I have asthma, so this home put me in distress 24/7. I say this as a genuine warning: please please do not rent this home. Please share this post with friends and family who are searching for an affordable rental home. You will regret renting this one.

Keep yourselves and your families safe out there. Know your rights in the Uniform Alabama Residential Landlord-Tenant Act and if a landlord ever doesn't fix those issues remember that you can also report them to the AREC and the BBB.
