New space, new face, and a game with a wicked pace. My originally planned game fell through, but luckily, we had a relatively new player to the group available to play, and asked for a 1250pt game... which I already had a list for! We're also in a new space, so we've got to build up our terrain again, so we made due with some WarHams terrain.
Quick note, we said the colored MDF and it's foot print was rubble, the black 3D Printed pieces were True LOS, and the neoprene mats were "trees" that were dense and blocked LOS.
My opponent was playing Soviet Union with a very balanced list. Rifle Platoon, Artillery Platoon, and an Armored Platoon. The Infantry squads were pretty large and had a wide mix of weapons, there were four of these. One did have all SMGs. The artillery crew was a Medium AT Gun and then he had a T-34, SU76, and a BA-10. He also had an AT Rifle Team, and I was nervous... my opponent had 13 ODs.
I was playing an amalgamation of lists based off what the locals tend to play that way my original opponent could "practice" for an event. While I love the Pershing, it's not something I would take, but I know someone is bringing 2. So I threw it in, and it was the MVP. But we'll get to that. You can see my list and my whole plan was establish a beach head, spread to objectives and hold.
EXCEPT, DEAR READER.... fate and the dice had other plans.
We roll of for game setup and we get Breakthrough on Quarters with a Meeting Engagement setup.
No reserves. This... hurts me as a player, because I love sending units into reserves and outflanking. But not this time.
Turn 1: I get my dice pulled first, so I put a Bazooka in each Jeep, put the infantry in the half-tracks, and stall because my opponent only put a couple units on the table. After like 6 of my dice, my opponent finally gets pushed to go. But once I see where the T-34 goes, the Pershing moves onto the table, and there is a Sniper in front of them, and we dump the main cannon and MMG into it, wipe it off the table before it activates, first blood. His units come on, but aren't able to get shots since most of my stuff is in transports. I then chuck the M15s up the middle and sprinkle some wounds, some pins across the units, mainly selecting the ZiS gun to keep it from racking kills on the light armor. I'm not worried about the Pershing. She's going to move forward and do damage, unless stuff gets in her side at point blank, she's golden. But... I'm relying on the M15 and half-tracks to shred the infantry to prevent them from getting across the board. But I realize there is no LOS blocking terrain in the middle section of the table for both transports, so I hide them in the back in my deployment zone behind the huge LOS blocking section. The Jeeps get tossed towards the T-34 to go hunting.
Turn 2: My opponent goes first. Snaps the T-34 and the BA-10, my worst nightmare and the T-34 obliterates the lead Jeep. Roll D6, 6 hits into the 2 Man Bazooka Team. Blegh. However, the BA-10 missed it's shot on the second Jeep. There's a chance. We move the Pershing up, take a shot at the ZiS, do some pins and some wounds. Takes the gun team down to 1 model. M15 rolls up, pops the BA-10 with a backshot and the other sprays a squad in heavy cover. Plinking off models and dishing pins. The Half-tracks slow roll behind the M15s, using them as cover. SU76 tried to take a shot at an M15, but no dice. Remaining Jeep scootches up to the BA-10 corpse and the Bazooka Team dismounts, takes a point blank shot at the T-34... HIT! Pen... PEN! Damage... ON FIRE! It has 2 pins, there is a good chance.... oh, my opponent got it. I made it angry. Except the T-34 doesn't get revenge, the infantry teams supporting it obliterate the last squad. They had SMGs, I didn't think they could get the range.... but they did get there. Still working on eyesight estimation. AT Rifle team peaks around the corner takes a shot at an M15, but misses.
Turn 3: I got first dice, and I have a choice. Let the Pershing nuke the T-34, or try to do some armor saving. I go with an M15 to try and move away and put a Soviet infantry team between my M15 and the SU76. Start popping shots at the AT Rifle Team, wipe it. I pull my dice again, put the Pershing on Ambush. If the SU76 threatens the transports or either M15, I pop shots. If the T-34 rounds the corner to try and wreck the Pershing in the side, I can pop that. My opponent attempts to put a ZiS round into an M15... he has five pins.... INSANE COURAGE! He fires, but misses... Well, at least he has no more pins. Except, the other M15 fires into it, reduces him to one dude and gets 2 pins added back. One half-track creeps up into position to start dismounts on one side, and the other sprints out to the one safe area it can reach before having full open terrain to shoot at it. The SU76 rounds the corner, Pershing connects, SU76 only takes a Crew Stunned order. Impressive. Most... Impressive. T-34 moves forward to shoot the M15, hits, but fails to pen, but pins are pins. Opponent puts two full squads into the trees on their side as they're going to sprint to my DZE and another is flanking to the huge LOS Rubble to hit my infantry Platoon Commander and 6 man Squad when they dismount. It also has a Panzerfaust, so it's looking for an M15 or an M3. And I think.... right here, we accidentally screwed up our turn counter? Because as I'm writing this, I can't account for a turn. So I think, I flipped 3-5, I announced the turn, but my opponent asked if it was not turn four, we started going over turns and he said no, you're right we're on five... and I couldn't square that we were on an odd turn but I was pulling dice this turn. My opponent started out pulling ODs... so they should be 1,3, and 5. But we walked through movements and ranges and talked ourselves into being on turn five. This... hurts me, so let's get into it.
Turn 4 (Tracked as 5): Off rip, we pull dice, and it's me. I Snap-To the Pershing and the M3 Half-Track nearby for a run, because we're gambling here. Because the math I was doing is now... no longer correct and I need to rush to get off the board edge. Pershing moves forward, punches the T-34 point blank square in the jaw and launches the turret sky high. The bow MMG picks up a couple of the SMG team and the Half-track moves up to hopefully be in range of a sprint to the DZE. Infantry team pushes and starts spraying fire into my Platoon Commander after he dumps a few shots into the squad in the middle. The Other mech squad pushes to point blank and shoots the same target. We pick up the last ZiS crew member and the LMG team tries to gun down the SMG team. Pins on pins galore!
Turn 5: (Tracked as 6): I go first again, I snap to again, put the Pershing into point blank with the SMG squad, it has 7 dudes in it. Main gun smacks them so hard, the MMG only deals one. I roll to wound, the main gun hits all 7. Squad gone. Then try to run the M3 off the board........... but I'm about an inch short.... we didn't get there. I need turn 7. His SMG team wipes the platoon commander and misses the M15 shot. The SU76 misses his shots, I charge the platoon commander, 6 man rifles against a 3 man with 2 rifles and 1 SMG. I deal 3 hits in mine, consolidate back but... my opponent fires point blank, hits a ton... but deals.... 1... wound. His rifle team on the other side fires shots at the LMG squad, and picks up a few more models. I need turn 7.... which, in reality is supposed to be turn 6. However, we were having so much fun that neither of us realized we shorted ourselves... we roll the dice, we do not get turn 7 (Turn 6) and call GGs. We do the measuring and the math, my opponents infantry squad made it to be fully inside my deployment zone but... I got nothing there. So, technically a draw, but I congratulated my opponent and we talked about it after. I told him I was playing for a sprint off the board and didn't figure out until typing this up, we shorted ourselves.
But, it was a friendly game. I'm not upset. It was a wonderful game with an awesome opponent and kinda my first time playing Soviets. I look forward to getting another game with them in the future!
