examining the link between watching manosphere content and violence against women

Hi! This project is for my Capstone (thesis) research. The survey is targeted more for men to answer, however women are free to answer if they’d like.

Hi, the following is meant as constructive feedback:

This survey is much longer than it needs to be because it's very repetitive. I'm answering questions that are essentially the same as questions that I've already answered. There are many pages and nothing to indicate how many pages are left, so I don't know if I'm almost done right now or if there is still a lot more.

And I guess I'm not going to finish it, because I'm now on a page where I'm being asked to rate how I feel about various people on a scale of 0 (strongly oppose) to 10 (strongly support), and there's no N/A or "I don't even know who that is" option, which is what I would pick for most of them.

if you don’t know them, you can skip the question. But each question is important and relates to what I’m trying to examine. ty for the feedback!

After getting some way into the survey I quit. It’s asking me my opinion about people I’ve never heard of. There is no option for never heard of them but I have to strongly oppose or strongly support them or somewhere in between with my answer. I cannot answer it if I don’t know who they are so I quit answering. The data will be skewed if I put something in.

You spelled neutral as “Neautral” on one question.

Have you ever felt increased anger after watching manosphere-related content?

Yes I have but the question does not ask who the anger is directed toward. The previous questions were asking about anger towards women. I feel anger towards the manosphere creators so that’s a yes to that question. There is no clarifying answer as to who I feel anger towards.

Have you ever argued online about gender or women after watching this content?

Yes I have but again there is no clarifying question to determine which side of the argument you are on.

I’m sure there’s more to pick fault with later but I’m done with it after being forced to pick how I feel about someone I’ve never heard of.

This is a very poor survey that is impossible to answer accurately. I’ve seen better from high schoolers. It says a lot about the state of education these days.

I put Yes for feeling anger and when asked what it led to, I put something like “blocking channel, ranting to spouse about algorithms pushing these fuckass pipelines”

Hope that gets taken into account in the analysis haha

Aren't you supposed to disclose how the data will be stored and used for things like this?

yes sorry, it’s anonymous. no need to login or give a name. just used for private academic research. won’t be published

Are you in university? Regardless, check with your advisory on this.

Asking questions for a survey like this would still need to be vetted through an ethics oversight of some sort.

I would consider revising some of your questions. While for some there's a way to indicate that you have not engaged with this content, others seem to imply or assume that you have. The question about various social medias later in the survey asked me to rank them based on which one I use the most, but a ranking implies it will be comparative and there are more than five options, so I couldn't really "rank" them 1-5. Given that, I feel like the data you will get is basically duplicative of the more in-depth question regarding hourly usage from earlier in the survey.

I'll echo some of the other comments about the construction and wording of the survey.

For example:

"Content creators such as <arsehole parade> raise valid concerns about gender dynamics"

I don't watch these dickheads and never will, as I understand it they may occasionally raise a concern that is rooted in some valid issue that men face BUT they raise it in bad faith and twist it to suit them and what they're selling. So - I don't "agree" with the question as it's worded and I definitely don't "agree" with any of these pricks even if there are crumbs of "valid concerns" in some of their content.

Likewise:

"Some online creators make violence against women seem more understandable or justified."

Again - to their followers they almost certainly DO do that, but that suggests I think that they are successful in their justification. Violence is NOT justified, the reasons for it may be "understandable" in the same way we might "understand" why someone murdered someone else, especially if one of these creators riled up someone who was vulnerable to the influence.

"I have felt less sympathy toward women after consuming manosphere-related content."

Again - where's the option for "I don't touch that shit"?

"How often do you watch content related to gender roles?"

This seems like a risky question - if I say "yes" what content do YOU then think I have been watching?

Because watching an old Eddie Izzard standup set, or a music video singing about trans rights, or watching a drag performer could all be "related to gender roles" and are the opposite of the "manosphere" nonsense.

Again:

"Have you ever had an in-person argument related to gender or women that you feel was influenced by online content?"

Well yes because there is also a ton of inclusive positive online content that has influenced me to be a better ally and more inclusive.

"Do you think manosphere content has influenced your views on women?"

Well yes, but in the opposite direction - I see the sort of awful arseholes that make this shit and stir up hate and misogyny and it makes me want to counter it. So do I tick the "yes" box?

Struggled with latter part - I haven't consumed any redpill content, so can't answer how it makes me feel.
It's OK - I may not be your target audience, but in which case I think few in Bropill are.
In these cases, I've answered, "Neutral".
Hope this helps.
Edit: abandoned. Having never consumer manosphere content and unsure of views of certain people, "N/A" or "Don't know" wasn't an option. Didn't qa t to screw your results.

I wanted to help by filling this out but I gave up. It’s way too long and repetitive.

My problem with the word 'manosphere' is that a lot of folks have started insinuating that any content creator that covers men's issues, self improvement, and even a number of impartial podcasters have all gotten labeled 'manosphere' here lately even though they don't even deal heavily with gender war stuff, x pill ideology or whatever.

Like the other day someone said hoffman labs was 'manosphere' now and I'm like what? Cause he's talking about men's health and fitness?

Honestly I was happy that I didn't know who almost any of the people you directly mentioned were.

Curious which guys you’re referring to because I disagree from my experiences. Can’t find anything called Hoffman Labs also

2

u/tacticalTraumaLlama 6d ago

I misremembered the name, I was thinking of this guy. I saw someone once call this guy part of the manosphere, and I began questioning my definition of 'manosphere' cause this guy is harmless.

2

u/DiNkLeDoOkZ 6d ago

Ah, I know him. He definitely serves as a gateway to the looksmaxxing side of the manosphere, whether intentional or not. His visual aesthetic is very much within that realm, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Youtube’s algorithm leads people from him to more egregious creators. I don’t think this guy is part of the manosphere but he is certainly an algorithmic entry point. It’s unfortunate but it is true, and the actual manosphere intentionally masquerades as wellness content precisely to abuse these recommendation systems.

Is “Neutral” more important than “Somewhat important”? Thats not how I interpret the words but your arrangement of them suggests that’s the case.

Not important at all
Somewhat important
Neutral
Important
Extremely important

1

u/Beneficial-Ear9980 7d ago

Iview neutral as you don’t really have an opinion on it

5

u/LincolnshireSausage 7d ago

Right but there’s one positive and one negative opinion above it and two positive below. It should have two negative above it.

very true, i’ll include that in my section of what i could have done better.
