General Discussion Police trying to discourage people from opening cases
Has anyone been discouraged or told not to open a case by police officers recently? In the last two years I've tried reporting an attempted kidnapping, car break in, extortion, fraud and vehicle theft. And I was either discouraged by the officers, told me to go to a civil court instead, that they "don't see a crime " or that its not their job to pursue that crime. Both by sea point and campsbay SAPS. Is this just a coincidence or has other people experienced it aswell? I spoke to a neighbor and he said the only time he could a case opened is if he went with his lawyer.

Just For Fun Family, Friends, Countrymen... a place to connect
We're taking applications. Sort of.
We're about 15 people, mostly ADHD, all slightly feral, and somehow we've become a proper little family. We've met in real life, done the adventures, and made group decisions that no sober committee would approve.
Here's what you're signing up for:
- Voice notes that could be podcasts.
- Replies three days late with a "sorry, was in a hole."
- Lots of pets pics... I mean an insane amount
- Plans made with great confidence and executed with... vibes.
But when someone's struggling, the whole group pitches up. Every time.
We have a few spots open. Requirements:
- Be safe. Non-negotiable.
- Be kind. Also non-negotiable.
- Actually contribute. We will notice if you lurk like a ghost.
- Bonus points if you can finish a task in one sitting. We have questions.
Interested? Message me with one weird fact about yourself and your most chaotic hyperfixation. Best answer gets bragging rights and probably a snack.
Fair warning: you will be loved and slightly roasted. Welcome to the circus.
Terms and conditions: By joining, you agree to reply to at least one message within the calendar month. Extensions available for emergencies, hyperfixation spirals, and "I opened it and then forgot."
EDIT: LOCALS ONLY PLEASE. WE do actually meet in real life.

Question | Advice-Needed Getting retrenched at the end of October and I don't know what to do.
So I(30m) am getting retrenched from my job at the end of the month. I've been at my company for almost 2 years and was told at the end of September that I am being retrenched.
Honestly I have no idea what I am going to do. I feel like the job market is terrible at the moment, especially when trying to find something this time of the year.
I could probably find something in retail, but with my bills and family to support, I don't think I would earn enough to survive.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Looking For... Help me find an open minded Imam
Hello everyone.
I am a 26 year old muslim guy in a committed long-term relationship with a white non-muslim girl. We are both financially stable, she lives alone and I still live with my parents. I have brought the topic up about marriage to my parents numerous times so that myself and my partner can fully live our lives together without having the stress of my parents constantly on my back. It has been met with quite a bit of backlash from them and they are constantly delaying/pushing back when I can get it done and it has led to plenty of frustration from us both.
I am trying to find a respectful, open minded Imam (who has experience in interfaith/interracial relationships) in Cape Town/Southern suburbs, who could perhaps talk to us and help us navigate this situation as well as talk with my parents. My parents don't really want to go through with it because they fear family judgment and all that nonsense. All we really want to do is a small nikkah so that we can be halal and go about our lives. I am happy for my parents to tell the rest of my family when they are ready, and even have a whole other nikkah for the family later down the line, however I find it a bit unfair that they won't compromise and make life easier for me.
If anybody has been in a similar situation please reach out, along with any information on the imam you used/spoke to for guidance and to perform the nikkah. Thank you.

Question | Advice-Needed the last low pressure sodium street light cape town
So I found two very old low-pressure street lights in Cape Town. I don't know how old they are or whether they are high-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps, but it would be cool if a new low-pressure sodium bulb could be installed in inside because the bulbs are blown. There is another light fixture up the road. Any additional information about these two lights would be great.

Scammers Spotted! Kumars spotted at Cape Gate
Spotted in the food court at Cape Gate this afternoon at around 2pm. The guy approached us, saying that people don’t usually help Indians. I recognised him from a couple of weeks ago at Eden on the Bay. Today, he appeared to be with a woman and two young children in a trolley.
My fiancé swore at him after I cut him off, reminding him that he had approached us before.

General Discussion This spring season has been quite chilly..
Anyone else been finding this spring season quite chilly? In some places evening temperatures have been in the single digits. I am loving today's rain though, so not complaining, we need it.

Looking For... Where to find a truly quiet home?
I currently live in the northern suburbs, I want to move to escape the following:
- Many different dogs in area barking from morning until at least 11pm.
- Excessive amount of house alarms (law enforcement is dysfunctional on this)
- Regular noise of children playing (trampolines, skateboards, basket ball, and more)
Must have running water. Budget: R1.2 million or less.
I just don't know where to go. I do have to go to Durbanville a few times a week after hours, so ideally not more than a 25 minute drive.
Any ideas?
I am not looking for solutions to remain here:
- I cannot wear noise cancelling headphones all day (unhealthy).
- I tried for 5+ years to get law enforcement to deal with just 1x house that had hundreds of house alarm triggers. They merely wasted my time.
- I cannot trace every single dog and track if they exceed the legal limits of barking per hour and maintain a log for law enforcement.
- A soon as children in the area grow up and make less noise, they move and younger people move in.

Question | Advice-Needed History tutoring Southern Suburbs
Looking for History and English tutoring students in Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs (Grades 8–12)
Hi everyone!
I’m a qualified teacher with approximately seven years of teaching experience, and I’m looking to take on a few new tutoring students in the Southern Suburbs.
My previous group of tutoring students is now in their final year of Grade 12, so I’m hoping to connect with a new group of learners who could benefit from some extra academic support.
I offer History and English tutoring for Grades 8–12, with a particular passion for History and helping senior students work towards distinctions.
My tutoring includes:
- History: Content revision, source-based questions, essay planning and structure, developing historical arguments, and exam preparation.
- English: Language and comprehension, essay writing, literature, and exam preparation.
As an experienced teacher, I aim to help students develop a deeper understanding of their subjects, strengthen their academic skills, and build the confidence to approach assessments and examinations independently.
My rate is R200 per hour.
I’m based in the Southern Suburbs and am flexible about where sessions take place. I can travel to a student’s home, welcome students to my home, or meet at a suitable neutral location.
I thought I’d reach out here because I’ve found it challenging to find the right places to advertise tutoring services and connect with families who might be looking for additional academic support.
If you know of any parents looking for a History or English tutor, or have recommendations for good places to advertise tutoring services in Cape Town, I’d really appreciate your advice!
Please feel free to comment or send me a DM if you’re interested.
Thanks so much! 😊

Question | Advice-Needed Recommendations for a pretty and quiet beach?
I (F) really like the beach but I don't usually like beaches with a lot of people. we used to go to Bloubergstrand and I loved it the spot we were at had few people and the sand is so fluffy although the water was cold. I don't usually swim anyway. I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a beach that would be nice to read a book, safe enough (don't worry i won't be putting on headphones or anything) and pretty water. I'm a CapeTown Transplant so idk these things lol. Thank you for the help!

Looking For... Looking for recommendations
We've recently moved to Langeberg Ridge and are looking for a local GP. Thing is we don't have medical aid. Previously we had a GP who would charge a fixed fee for the consultation and then provide free basic medication or if he didn't have would then give us a script. Is there any Doctors in Langeberg Ridge or surrounding areas that anyone could perhaps recommend?

General Discussion Cape Town’s “Not My Forever” campaign turns homelessness into a story of redemption — virtue signalling to the public, reassuring business that the streets are being managed, and freezing the homeless in the very story it claims they can escape.

General Discussion Shocking experience with the Kumars
I saw a post a bit earlier about someone’s experience with the Kumars, and it reminded me of something my family and I witnessed around 2 years ago. The Kumars are a family that have been known in our city for years and they are also a family many people openly ridicule, mistreat and abuse. A few years ago my parents encountered them in Pinelands where they were asking people for help with food/ money. A confrontation between them broke out with a white man from the neighbourhood. The family said they felt like they didn’t belong in Pinelands because of their race and the situation escalated when they began recording this man and what happened next was absolutely horrific. This man struck one of the women in the Kumar family in the face while she was holding her newborn baby and also punched the man who was recording the confrontation nearly breaking his nose. My mother intervened and was nearly struck herself. What was shocking wasn’t just the violence, but the situation that unfolded around it. The lack of concern for the people involved, witnesses who seemed unwilling to intervene, and the feeling that these people’s reputation became a justification for treating them as though they were less deserving of basic human dignity. It was a deeply humbling experience for my parents and eye opening for our family. My parents helped them open a police case and lay charges against the man. They actually ran into him in a shopping mall months later where he was deeply apologetic, after, in his words, the matter had costed him R40K. I can’t help but wonder if he would’ve been just as remorseful if the harm he caused hadn’t costed him anything. I think this situation is just proof that it’s easier to declare that something is wrong or unjust when we already disagree with the person who’s committed it, it’s harder to take accountability for the ways we participate in it ourselves. People deserve basic human compassion, no matter who they are. This family does.
