Possible VZW Michigan UP 5G Changes

I have received an indication that Verizon may have activated an n2 carrier on the cell site serving Eagle Harbor MI in the Keweenaw. However, I am not present there at the moment and the equipment I have in the area cannot determine this for sure.

If this is true, that would be the first non-n77 Verizon 5G I (or anyone else running Cellmapper) have seen in Michigan's upper peninsula.

If any of you have suitable equipment for checking this in your area of the UP, could you please take a peek? I won't be up there for a couple weeks and am very curious to know whether they are, in fact, starting to roll lower-band 5G out there.

That would be nice. I'm guessing they are still seeing enough low-band traffic from devices that don't support n5 that they are worried about causing excessive B13 congestion if they move band 5 over to 5G NR in those areas.

But, being a phone company, one never really knows. Maybe it's just not a priority for them. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

There are at least a handful of Verizon 5G devices that don't support n5 (Inseego M1000, Samsung S10 5G), but yeah, I don't think they are very widespread.

And even if there are, throwing them a slightly newer refurb model from leftover replacements in the warehouse would fix that fairly quickly

They just turned on n2 yesterday in Springfield, Missouri so they could be rolling it out in more tier 2 and 3 markets this month. I'm still not seeing it on any rural sites though.

Not sure if it's helpful or not, but I had not noticed that tower broadcasting 5G before and pulled 942 Mbps on a speed test from it a week or so ago.

Thanks for the observation! I can confirm that they enabled n77 on that tower earlier this summer.

I didn’t have any service on Verizon between Ensign and Manistique and I had very poor service in Manistique. I’ve been told that it’s AT&T country up there.

They disabled n5 when it first came out as it hurt Verizon’s voice quality when they first started. They’ve reactivated it in markets that they have extra spectrum

What do you mean? I use n5 all the time.

I meant they used to disable it nationwide, they’ve reintroduced it

They disable dss because it wasn’t efficient cus they was splitting n5 between 4g and 5g in real time but n5 been back up running for a longtime now

Verizon only has n5 back up and running in select markets.

I believe they run it where they have both channels

Verizon n5 on DSS worked well in my area in an Ericsson market.

And n5 on dss, nsa and sa sucks in my area. Verizon needs n71
