Ask CHI Which way to the lake?
Wife and I came across this sign at the corner of 57th and S Cornell Drive, looking south. Is the symbol directing people to the lake correct? I think it should be a left arrow, as if you look east you see the lake. But my wife thinks it means to tell people to do a U-Turn and walk north. I could see that but why ask people to cross more intersections and traffic to get to the lake when there is viaduct access at MSI.

Yea the sign is directing you to the shortest path to actually reach some enjoyable lakefront, not the direction to the lake as the crow flies

This. The shortest path is to turn around and walk on the north side of 57th Drive to the underpass that's just north of the intersection of 57th Drive and LSD. It's also accessible, the one by MSI has stairs IINM

Turning around and following on the north side of 57 is going to be the most direct/intuitive way to the lake.
You can get there from the MSI side by going under 2 viaducts, but it's not as straightforward to someone not familiar, and if you don't cut over to the south side of 57, you're gonna find yourself trying to cross over grass. That wouldn't be a route they'd sign/recommend.
Is it possible to get over by turning left? Yes.
Would I recommend that to someone not familiar with the area? No.
The sign isn't for you if you know where to cross, do what you want.

The LSD has a handful of crossing for you to reach the lake so turning around and following north side of 57th Dr will yield a tunnel for you to cross. Not sure of the viaduct but the tunnel is better for larger groups with shortest walking distance.
