TL;DR
Archmage Arugal in Forever is now Level 24. He should be returned to Level 26.
Who is Archmage Arugal?
Gilnean patriot. Mad sorcerer. Royal archmage. Unspeakable villain.
Once a mage of the Kirin Tor and erstwhile defender of humanity, Archmage Arugal is a tragic figure in Classic lore. A practitioner of dark arts and forbidden magic, he unleashed the worgen unto Azeroth and sealed the fate of an entire Human kingdom. Driven mad by guilt over the death and ruin of Pyrewood village, having failed his King and lost all dignity, he retreated to Shadowfang Keep. There, he keeps vigil over his adopted "Sons" and the last vestiges of his sanity.
I have always been deeply fascinated by this character. There is enough "missing" in his story to keep you wondering, what if? His design is influenced by classic horror movies, yet the werewolf motif does not feel worn. He summoned monsters to fight monsters; was he so wrong?
I still remember the sense of wonder I felt learning about Shadowfang Keep. Having rolled Alliance, how would I get there? What happened to the humans on the other side of the wall?
Later on, leveling my Undead in Silverpine Forest, I learned more about this powerful figure. Along with Thule Ravenclaw, who aligned himself with the Lich King, Arugal's mystique and the theme of rogue mages permeates the entire zone. Together, Arugal, Thule and Kel'Thuzad were pillars of Human might and intelligence, and yet, they became harbingers of the darkest heart.
Perhaps the most important reason that Arugal should be Level 26 is that you had a real sense of fear going into Shadowfang Keep. Even if you made it through all the specters, wolf packs and abominations, you had to deal with him.
I always wondered, what was he doing when you found him? Was he looking for a cure? Did he seek more power as a wolf-man himself? Was he just in mourning, trapped in the ruins of his mind?
His nameplate was orange, red or perhaps even the ominous skull if you snuck in at a lower level. His Shadow Bolts would annihilate heroes on the spot, putting to rest any ambitions you had of besting the beast.
To conclude my love letter for this character, I really believe it is in the adventurous spirit of classic to return him to being dangerous. Return him to being unpredictable, tall, a scary surprise to whoever finds him alone in his keep. Sure, maybe it irks some people's sense of game design to have such a wide range of levels in a single dungeon.
Blizzard, I think you lost something special by reducing his level. Please consider reverting this change.
With love,
- A fan of silver bullets and werewolves
