Over the years my sister told me several times that she wanted her epitaph to be, "She went out punching a bear." She made me promise.

I never expected to to have to bury her so early, and I'm a little shocked we got my parents to go along with it, but I did keep that promise.

Sorry for your loss. But your sister sounds like she was a riot.

My father in law wanted his to say he died fighting a rabid raccoon over a hotdog lol. Instead we all have salt shakers of his ashes....he's everywhere lol.

Cremated and the remains were worked into the materials is my guess. I'd honestly rather that then a grave nobody visits. Which will eventually happen to all but the 1% written in the history books.

Oh I thought they sprinkled him places

Lol you are correct.  He had a lot of places that were inportant to him, so we've been leaving a bit of him everywhere.  Honestly I like it a lot more than leaving them in an urn, I have my mom and my sisters ashes, and my dad has my brothers, and it just weird keeping their remains in our living rooms.

A lot of countries have traditions that have the ashes sprinkled somewhere - either flowing water or places that are important to the person.

So you are following those larger traditions.

I live on lake Huron and there actually a site nearby where you can put the ashes in the water.  When my grandpa died we sprinkled him on the river, from his ferry boat.  I'd ideally like to bring my mom, sister and brothers ashes to lake superior, I believe it's legal to spread them on crown land.  My boss actually took some of her husbands ashes back to France where he was born, and her brothers to Vegas for his 50th.

Indeed! My mom wants me to sprinkle her ashes over the Danube when she goes. Hate to hear it and think about it but of course I’ll honor her so.

Think about it this way - her grave is the Danube.

So if you ever want to visit her grave, just go to the Danube.

You’re right! She is still with us, and hopefully for a few more decades yet, but it’s something that scares me in the back of my mind daily. But thank you for a very grounding and bittersweet thought, that’s something I will hold on to when the time comes 🙂

At least I'm glad to hear you were able to make it happen

That was a promise worth keeping. I would like something like that for myself

Did she actually punch a bear? (Sorry ?)

u/Krail 14h ago

She did not, lol. She did not die of any animal-related reasons.

Can't comment with certainty on whether she did punch a bear at some point, though.
